  • Wow, its been a month already since I made the new Festool MFT cabinet, time is flying by.
    In this video I start making and fitting the drawers moving ever closer to completion.
    The contrast between the Ply and the Oak really makes this piece of workshop furniture stand out from its 'lesser' MDF siblings!

    I have a set of Dominos that I wrote the size on with a Sharpie Marker (example 6x40). I sanded these Dominos a little on the edges and sides. I use these strictly for dry-fit and and never for glue-ups. They are easier to put in and remove. Also you can apply blue painters tape around the boards during dry-fit and this allows glue removal to be much easier, glue application within the non-tape areas and less glue staining on the piece as well as ensuring adequate glue. Nice job with your video.

    Been there and done that! People sometimes ask me from time to time what is the most important tool I should get for my workshop. I ask if they have a sturdy, functional workbench, to which they answer yes. My retort is; "then get a nice woodstove". But I don't need the heat, it's in my basement they will say, to which I reply "no, its to burn your mistakes"

    I love how you "overbuilt" these drawers from 18mm birch plywood. I get flack from my friends telling me that I don't have to use 1/2 backs or drawer bottoms for my kitchen cabinets etc. I LOVE LOVE to overbuild my projects. They turn out heavy, they feel wonderful when operating them and they even SOUNDS great.. like a nice solid piece instead of an empty shell of thin woods. Good work takes longer but is so satisfying in the end. It's the little things that we get out of wood working and overbuilding things is WHY I want to do things on my own.. otherwise, what would be the point.

    Graham, as a fellow TH-camr (in my case wannabe), I can appreciate the effort you put into your video! You should be getting many more likes. There was so much going to learn from, that I had to pause and back up several times. I'd love to see more on your plywood cutting process.

    After watching both parts, I can say this is a beautiful job. Well done. The only tiny comment I will make is I thought only Americans said ‘off of’. In the context you used it, it was almost OK. But really the ‘of’ is completely redundant. You could use ‘from’ which I personally think goes nicely with a cup of coffee and a small piece of cake😀

    All good stuff Graham! As you say it is great to have a tool that is so accurate. The one challenge I struggle with is cutting Domino's away from the edge - say to add an upright support in a run of shelving. Have you any tips you can share to assist me make that operation more reliable and accurate? Please keep the good work with your videos - its all very instructive.

    • @GTWoodshop

      Hi Andrea, I beleive you're referring to the fence which is made by Incra, the table is an old (and ready to be replaced) assembly mdae from left overs. 👍

    And if so why?

    • @GTWoodshop
      @GTWoodshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi pty, yes I did, mid size for all. I didn't feel the need to have the Domino line everything up with the tightest setting as it was such a simple shape so just left it on 2 for all, a quick tap with the mallet and close up the clamps. 👍😎

    I noticed @5:14 there are no dominos between the 'back' and the 'side' (presumably the 'top' helps) but have to noticed any potential issues doing it this way?

    • @GTWoodshop
      @GTWoodshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, you're dead right. as the span was so small I really don't think there going to need additional support. The ply is incredibly dense, cabinet grade so I think I good. I've used the standard 'red' hardwood veneered play from Wickes etc in the past and that would definitely need them all round. Time will tell but I think I'm good. 👍

    • @ricochetme
      @ricochetme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same. Since these faces will never be visible, why not drive a couple screws to secure the joint further? In my shop, I'm constantly asking myself if "this part" will ever be visible?
