Great video, Julia! Brava! Setlists have truly been a gamechanger for me, especially in solo gigs. And it's so easy to switch between etude books now during fundamental practice instead of having to fumble through multiple books on the stand.

    Hello Julia!
I was wondering what violin do you have? I am considering purchasing an instrument, but I need recommendations on preferences for high school/ early college students. If you don’t mind, could you possibly make a video on your opinion (or just a comment reply). I love your work by the way. Thank you!

I definitely plan on making a video at some point soon! My short answer is that I have a French full size violin made by Marc Laberte in the 1920s. I got it from Voss Violins in Atlanta, Georgia. For high school/early college, I would definitely go for a step up or pre-professional instrument. A step-up instrument would cost around $1500-$4000 and a pre-professional instrument usually ranges from $4000-$10000. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I definitely think you can still make a good sound and improve a lot with a step-up instrument if money is a concern. You should also think about getting a bow as well. Some people say that your bow should cost at least 10% of the cost of your instrument, but bows can range in sounds just like instruments can. If you don't have the capacity to travel to a lot of violin shops, many offer a mailing option where they mail their instruments to you to try out for a week or two. I personally had up to 6 violins at one point when I was picking out this instrument. I know that's a lot of info, but let me know if you have anymore questions! I suggest checking out the articles on violinist.com for more opinions. :)

@@JuliaJacobsen Hi again... I really really appreciate it! I also didn't think I would see your response so fast, but it just happened to be a few minutes ago. In short, my budget is under 3500. I am going into high school and I have never actually owned a violin (that was bought since I only rented for several years); so it is very exciting getting a new one. I have been renting and looking to purchase an instrument from a shop in New York called The String House. they provide a wide variety of fine and advanced instruments which is great. They sent me a few instruments from there and they are arriving on Saturday. Its only a few (maybe 4 or 5 I believe). One is a 1925 Cappicioni (Czech) which I'm not too sure if it is an actual Marino Cappicioni since those go for lots of money. And a few Hiroshi Kono violins which is Japanese and recently made in 2019-2021. Like you said before, a pre-professional violin is quite expensive for someone my age and I'm guessing you have something similar since you are studying music. Also, I've never owned a good bow. I'm also not too sure where to buy one since all of the shops near me are not the best (I live in the San Antonio area in Texas). Again, I really appreciate your help with everything and sorry for the really long comment. Thank you so much!

That's so exciting that you're getting some violins to try out Allen! If you're going into high school, I think an instrument within that budget is perfect! I had a violin that was worth about $1500 throughout most of high school and I still improved a lot with that instrument. It's great that you're trying some older and newer violins. I have quite a few friends that went with newer instruments and absolutely love them. Maybe once you have gotten your violin, you can get some bows shipped to you if you have any extra money in the budget. I wish you the best as you go through this process! Keep me updated on which one you end up going with :)

@@JuliaJacobsen Definitely. I will get a few opinions from teachers and friends because it is a big thing since it is the instrument that people will practice the most on especially since its high school. Again, I really appreciate your help with everything... It may not seem like much but it truly is. I wish you all the best.

      Hi Julia,
Sorry for the late response but I completely forgot to update you since starting school again with lots of entry exams and other things. But we did manage to get the Cappiccioni (not the modern instrument). Thank you very much (again) for the advice with choosing the instrument since its going to be with me for a long time. Have a good one
