    The stereo overhead is amazing. I however can only afford the LX but am equally excited to hear it make strides in my studio. Great review

    Nice video! I recently picked up the DLX.
    It's a fantastic mic modeling system.
    Did you route or bounce the stereo channels to mono?
    Knowing how it works, I'm trying to understand what I'm looking at on your screen.

      You have to record two separate channels for the plugin to work. I recorded them into a stereo track in Pro Tools. That said, as soon as you put the Sphere plugin on a stereo channel, for some reason it makes the Pro Tools meters show as mono. I'm guessing that's because it processes it as one mic. Good catch.

    Hi, what a great review.
    My question is: can i record my guitar with trough my pickup and record vocals trought dlx?
    Im considering buying Apollo twin.
    Does dlx needs two channels only when recording stereo?
    I hope I’m clear about my question. :)

      As I mentioned in the video, it unfortunately requires that you use two inputs at all times when recording with the mic. So if your interface only has two inputs and you want to record more, you'd either be out of luck or need to use some additional preamps with ADAT (which the twin can do). But that's an added expense.

    Fantastic video. I am thinking of buying this mic, I love to hear your personal opinion on my story so I can make the best decision. I am an professional opera singer and do my recordings at home. I have a apollo x4 and most of the UAD pre amp emulations and other good plug ins for vocals and mixing. I bought the Charteroak SA538 I think 20 years ago, it is that old, however, I didn't use it on a daily basis. The challenges I run into using this mic is that my voice sounds diminished, like it is locked up in a box and the power of the voice and also the clarity is not there - it sound completely different from what my real voice is. That means if I want to bring power in and clarity I have to do tons of processing to get the sound a little better, it is kinda frustrating for a 1700 euro mic. I made a vocal booth using professional materials hoping the sound would improve by getting rid of my living room over-acoustic frequencies. No difference on the power of the voice. There the vocal booth is closed with the professional blankets I get even more muddy sound. I recorded close by 3 inches, and 6 inches, 12 inches to see if it is because the mic cannot handle the operatic sound - the farther I stand away the thinner the sound becomes....I have no idea if it is the type mic I bought, or, that 20 years made it warn out although it always diminished my vocals. The DLX, do you think in your opinion and experience with the mic that it would be the solution for me and finally get my voice recorded as it is, or, do you think that the mic without any processing and even without the UAD different mic options, that it would capture my voice a lot better than what I described about the charteroak studio microphone! Mostly opera singers are recorded with 2 mics to get that wider kinda stereo field sound as you hear on classical albums, or Pavarotti's recordings. The DLX plug in does have a stereo option to record with and I wonder if that would mimic the way opera singers are recorded. What do you think? You can hear the vocals sound FREE and not boxed in and weak - I think you know what I mean...I think they probably not do a whole lot of wild processing on opera voices beside maybe some compression and reverb if it is not recorded in a hall - Hope you can shine some light into my recording world 🙂and looking forward for a positive reply hopefully that the DLX will make a big difference for my recordings...Thanks in advance...

      It’s very hard to say what the issue is with the mic you own. It’s possible that it’s just not the best mic for your voice.
      That said, the DLX is great since there are so many options to choose from. The likelihood of finding one that sounds good on your voice is very likely. Heck, even without the emulations, it still sounds great.
      As for the stereo piece you’d have to be mindful of the polar pattern. I don’t record opera but my guess is that often they’ll use two omnidirectional mics in order to capture the sound from all around the mic. The DLX does let you do Omni mode. You could even do figure 8 mode if you wanted more focus on your voice and just a little bit of your room.
      The only real way to know for certain is to try it for yourself.

So, your experience is that the mic on itself sounds clear and will not diminish the sound of the vocalist even when they sing louder!     Hi, I hope you're well, I was wondering if there is somebody who may be able to offer me some help and advice to resolve some issues in having with the Sphere DLX. I only purchased the microphone yesterday, and l've started testing out some rough vocal and acoustic guitar at the same time. I am set up on a mono track in logic, but I keep getting a notification telling me
    'Identical Signal Levels Detected', and that levels in the front (left) and rear ( right) channels are the same. It's suggested the microphone's calibration switch is on, but it isn't, it's switched to the on position. I'm obviously not doing something correctly. Some help to rectify this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks

      With this mic, you need to always use a stereo channel with both cables from the microphone plugged in. Try that out. It will likely solve your problem.

    This is crazy. Definitely not a toy, and I understand more about the price now. It’s ovious this is not selling well, it’s paired with a Apollo X4 as a give away. can give you a variety of sounds- I want to use it for voice over work for video games and movies, what does it sound like? By the way excellent video.

      This mic would work great for voiceover work. Especially since it gives you the ability to really find the best mic emulation to suit your voice. I have no idea how well they’re selling but I wouldn’t discount it since they’re currently giving it away with their interfaces. UA runs primos like that all the time.

    So if you wanna mic the whole drums with the dlx, you have to buy a DLX for all the parts of the drums? Or can you use the software with any mic, after all it’s an emulation or no?

      The software only works for the DLX or LX versions of their microphones. In the video, you are only hearing the DLX as an overhead. Generally, when you record drums, you'll want to mic up each component of the drum kit. You COULD buy a DLX for each piece of the kit, but that would be way too expensive considering many of the classic drum mics are significantly cheaper.

      You could TECHNICALLY put the plugin on any stereo track, as it's literally just a plugin. However, you wouldn't be truly modeling anything, b/c the plugin is designed to have the DLX has the starting point from which it converts the signal to the desired model.

    How would you go about tracking with an outboard compressor while retaining the calibration so the emulations still work? Would you run both outputs to separate compressors and have both compressors at same settings? Or would the threshold need to be lower for the back side of the microphones output since it wont compress as much if you're recording a source from the front? Or would a stereo compressor, like a bus compressors be the best bet?

      I believe Universal Audio recommends not using any additional processing while tracking with this mic. But I think that applies more for people who don’t own Apollo interfaces. With an Apollo interface, you could track with the Sphere software and compressors, etc and commit that to your recordings. So in essence, you’d have to choose the emulation you ultimate want and commit that. But if you wanted the flexibility to change the emulation in the mixing stage, you should track without any additional processing.
      If you do track with compression, I believe you’d want both sides to have the same compression settings, so a stereo compressor would be your best bet.

      Unfortunately, I wasn't sent an LX to try. I've heard that they're very similar. The biggest difference is that you don't get as many of the emulations. I've also heard that without emulations, the mic sounds slightly different than the DLX. But most people are buying the mic to use the emulations anyway so that might not be a big deal.

    Great video bro, but your ‘friends’ at UA are not in my cool book. Been 4 months that I’ve been trying to get my LA-2A and a pair of 1176LNs serviced and they won’t even honor their own warranty for my new LA-2A. Will never buy another new item from UA again.
