I love Cape Town. Been there 9 times and part of my 3,000 mile solo road trip across South Africa on my 60th birthday. Thanks for the great videos. Greg, Springfield, Louisiana. ps. 17 hours from New Orleans to Johannesburg.

It's quite shocking, as a local, to go to a fancier/fancy restaurant once in a blue moon as a treat to see.... backpackers... Yes, good food is well-priced if you are coming from a strong Dollar or Euro country, but for us locals... not so much. Which is a real pity...
Thanks though for asking people not to complain about loadshedding - we have to live with it all the time, it causes havoc with our lives, and it's not going to go away anytime soon, so being reminded of it by those who can fly away from it, well, we can do without that!

I live in Cape Town, and I can assure you that these negatives sound much worse than they actually are. Firstly, load shedding is not that bad - it happens on a schedule, and usually for no longer than 2 hours, if at all that day. And everyone here just gets on with things... If you're in a bar or restaurant they will have a generator or other sources of lighting. And as for safety, you are as safe in Cape Town (the city area) as you are in London (I know, I lived in London for 11 years). If you walk with your phone out in central London someone can snatch it there too. So don't be careless like that with your valuables. But also don't think it's a dangerous city, because it is not - almost everyone here is is very chill, so you can be chill too. Just be sensible.
Also, the nightlife is by no means the best in the world, but we do have one - if you know where to go! But most establishments are on the smaller, more intimate side. Our big nightlife events are outdoors and out of the city (from Spring throughout Summer), usually over multiple days (you go camping there - or just stay awake! lol)

      @camdendavid  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Agreed! The 'loves' farrrrr outweigh the 'hates' in Cape Town. Top tier city, wonderful people, and a must visit :)
Load shedding will be a shock for the folks coming from the US but it's a minor inconvenience compared to what the city has to offer

I live in the Cape and travel locally with my family full-time and I’m absolutely loving your videos, concise and varied, excellent stuff. Really appreciate your perspective and respect of our culture. I do agree with one previous comment though that unfortunately for us who live here and earn local currency a lot of the nicer restaurants aren’t quite as accessible to us or are reserved for special occasions. I’m definitely jealous of travellers from stronger currencies being able to experience more than we usually can.

I have been to countless cities around the World, and Cape Town still remains in the list of the Top 2 most beautiful cities in the World, impossible for anyone to argue that point, but having also lived in Cape Town for 6 months, I have to say I found it difficult to make friends there.

About making friends true also - and that's mainly because it's a very diverse. However the local are still very tribal in Cpt each group in packs main groups (Coloured, White English, White Afrikaans, Black Xhosa and other tribal groups with Nigerians and Zimbabweans in the mix
In Johannesburg it's much easier to make friends but slowly but surely Cpt is getting there as most locals are friendly but just used to their own groups

@@camdendavid if you don't mind some suggestions then from someone who have visited a couple of times already (and hopefully will be there the last week of June), here are some to consider: Peter Beiers for chocolate, and their must-try hot chocolate.
Rosenborg palace, is a must visit too and worth your time.
The paints museum is worth your time too. Check the day in which they close late.
Their History museum, one day wasn't enough to cover the collection thoroughly.
The nearby Glyptotek has an impressive collection.
Oh, there's a small Islamic collection museum too.
The modern aquarium is not a must-have, but recommended if you have time (and again, there's one day with late opening). The building design is unique though and the area is relaxing.
The public transportation is pretty easy to understand, use, and buy tickets for.
The city's vibe is relaxed, enjoyable to walk around the center, and def visit Torvehallene food court.
Personally have, and prefer, to stay south of the center nearby a metro stop. At least makes my trip to and from the airport much easier. It's also a quiet areas.
(imo the area around and west of the train station is a bit so-so)

This was so cool. We fly tonite from Germany. Wasn´t really that expensive as we fly around the world. The thing that did scare me was the load shedding so we were quick to ask our highrise airbnb and they assured us that they will not be affected, but since being in the cbd area it does scare me. I really stand out eve as a colored person. But this bit made me open my eyes. Thx. Btw. lets be real here south africa an extremily rich country in terns of resources
how on earth are thoes townships of corrugated shacks still there after 20 years
why havent they been teared down and repolaced with the decent aesthetically pleasing social housing and gardens like their fellow white South Africans .

@@chrisbennett6260 Appreciate you sharing your detailed thoughts. I agree.. it's sickening to see the level of suffering. I'll admit, I'm not nearly informed enough to understand the intricacies of all these issues. Unfortunately, I see some degree of these problems in every country I visit (especially my home country). I hope we get to a place in society where we choose not to tolerate these disparities and instead choose to pour time and resources into providing meaningful solutions that would better the lives of those who don't have the same privileges of someone like me

Sorry that wasn't available! I'd be lying to you if I said I've stayed anywhere else (other than a hotel down in the CBD). I'd probably look for another Airbnb somewhere in Sea Point or Green Point. Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Please keep telling more people that the load shedding and general poor state of thing is due to corruption. No sarcasm.
We have a 2.3 trillion rand budget every year. Government salaries are only 556 billion rand. So the remaining 1.75 TRILLION rand basically vanishes.
We could really use international help in returning us to a member in good standing with the common wealth.

Let's face it - Cape Town doesn't get the tourist action it justly deserves not because it's far or out of the way - hello Bali. It's because in the western world little positive content about Sub-Saharan Africa is shown and thus the vast majority of an entire continent isn't seen as a travel option unless you are sophisticated and open minded. Compare CT to any of the hot digital nomad destinations in say southeast Asia - Bali, Danang - and it's not even close. Cape Town wins hands down from climate to scenery/topography to multiculturalism to the widespread use of English. That being said violent crime and electricity problems are issues that are less prevalent in SEA.
