  • The Flintstone's original title was The Flagstones, but the name had to be changed as a popular comic strip was using a family with a very similar name.

Jackie Gleason once tried to sue Hanna-Barbera but decided that he did not want to be known as "the guy who yanked Fred Flintstone off the air".

Thank you for educating the masses about shows from decades past that my generation (and younger) probably don't think much about; I think it's so great that something from that long ago is still remembered fondly and enjoyed by everybody in the current day and age. My dad and his wife actually go by the nicknames Fred and Wilma despite their actual names not being anywhere near those lol! Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for the history of the iconic cartoon, The Flintstones. I grew up watching The Flintstones and I remember watching the episodes with my sister, Jinger.
I really do appreciate all the information I learned from you today. I am a child of the 60s and early 70s TV.
I love learning something new everyday.
Again, thank you and I appreciate all the time and effort it took to make this trivia TH-cam vignette.

As a 60s/70s kid I can't remember a world without the Flintsones. Growing up in Scotland I'm not sure if the Honeymooners was aired here during its original run but The Phil Silvers Show ( Sgt Bilko ), The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy were huge hits at the time. The Honeymooners were shown in the early 90s and I immediately thought " this is the Flinstones " so the influence was obvious. Other cartoon characters ( usually mice )had been a more straightforward lift of Ralph and Ed but I wouldn't have known at the time.
As a side note my son has a great knowledge about Hannah Barbera cartoons. We were discussing this during a time when he was appearing in the Edinburgh Fringe. My dear old Dad was sitting and listening but as he was quite ill by then he wasn't joining in much. My son was telling me about the Flintsones pilot show, he told me that Dino had originally been able to talk and would break the fourth wall like some of the animals used for labouring tasks around the stone age house. Test audience feedback was not good about this so he was reworked as the dog like pet that we all know and love.
" so what about the sabre cat that boots Fred out of the house during the end credits? " I asked.
" oh the cat was only in the pilot episode, was gone after that and didn't return "
My dad suddenly perked up and interjected " well that's cats for ye, ye ken what they're like "
😹😹😹😹 poor auld father, he'd been half listening and wanted to add his tuppence worth.

Personally, I like the instrumental "Rise & Shine" a lot better than the vocal "Meet The Flintstones" as the theme song. Whenever "The Flintstones" went into syndication, "Meet The Flintstones" was used on all episodes. I never knew that there was an instrumental theme song until I caught the earlier episodes on Boomerang whenever I got the upper tier cable TV package.

From a footnote for the LaserDisc release "The Flintstones Collection":
[Last year Fred Seibert, the president of Hanna-Barbera, told Bill Hanna & Joe Barbera he wanted to restore the Flintstones and make a laser disc set that would be a quality benchmark for all of the Hanna-Barbera library. A team of 'film detectives' started tracking down original 35mm cut negative, interpositives and 35mm magnetic audio elements in warehouses in New Jersey, Los Angeles, at a vault constructed in a salt mine in Kansas, and even with our international partners in Europe and South America.
Every element was checked by our staff of editors for quality. When necessary we made new interpositives. The search turned up the never seen, original color main title and textless end credit backgrounds from the first run on ABC. We went to great pains in this project to match the colors as they were originally intended, with production cells from collectors used as reference. A colorist was brought in to hand mix paints to the exact hue and tint from 1960 and new cells were painted.
The 35mm interpositives were transferred at Vidfilm, Los Angeles on an ARCA's color corrector and Rank Cintel secondary color correction to digital Beta cam in both NTSC and PAL. The digital transfer was then processed through a Digital Vision VDNR 1000 Processor to remove any film artifacts including minor dirt and film scratches. Sound went through a sonic solution to remove any tape hiss.]

While The Flintstones were the first half hour Primetime animated series to have 1 continuing story and had new episodes, the first animated Primetime series was The Gerald McBoing Boing Show (albeit in repeats and aired shorts made exclusively for the series).

The original opening credits to the Flintstones wasn’t really shown in syndication until around the year 2000. My brother pointed out that that opening was the only one that actually said the name of the show onscreen.

5:20 In Germany they couldn't write German lyrics, so the vocal part was played on an electronic organ. Have no idea, if it was provided by Hanna Barbera or the backing only, so they added the organ.

Hanna-Barbera made the Flintstones characters have a little bit of fashion sense, despite the fact that the characters were all cavemen and cavewomen.
For example, they gave Fred Flintstone an outfit consisting of an orange sabertooth cat skin suit with a turquoise snake skin necktie...

Actually a LOT of Hanna-Barbara was borrowed from their Tom & Jerry years at MGM, and cartoon fans have noticed suspicious similarities to Tex Avery’s cartoon “The First Texas Batman”-
    The “clothes” alibi came later.

Funniest sarcastic answer ever said on TV was by Fred. He was writing to Wilma when Barney walks in and says "What ya doin Fred, writing a letter?" Fred says "No, I'm riding a bicycle on the ceiling" I still laugh at that! The other is when they all go on a trip and the shot is of their feet with a trickle of water on the ground and Fred Says "So this is the Grand Canyon"
