Best cartoons, ever! What I now appreciate was the two levels of humor in the cartoons, the slapstick humor for kids and the humor geared more to adults, like showings caricatures of then current movie stars, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Edward G. Robinson, etc. It was only after I was an adult that I saw the humor and understood who these characters were. I never tired of watching WB cartoons. Who can forget the “Rabbit of Seville”, a cartoon classic? What outstanding talent these cartoonists had. Of course, these cartoons were made even better by the man of 1,000 voices, Mel Blanc. Together, they were the Golden Age of Cartoons.

Anyone watching Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, as kids, in the 60's, remembers the great producers and animators. Thank you for the interesting back stories about them.
I think a mention could be made of the great Mel Blanc, who voiced virtually all of the characters and gave them life.
Lastly, I would like to add that I was also a big fan of Max Fleischer's Popeye, in Black & White, with the opening and closing ship's door at the beginning.

Leon Schlesinger was a distant relative of studio chief Jack Warner and his three older brothers Harry, Albert, and Sam (who died in 1927). Like Warner, Schlesinger was known for his hard-nosed business practices. On one occasion, he boycotted the Academy Awards for what he claimed was preferential treatment for Walt Disney. Besides cartoons, he produced six B-movie westerns for Warner Bros., all starring John Wayne before he rose to fame as an A-list star, thanks to the success of the movie Stagecoach.

Thanks for the video. I have Mel Blanc's autobiography and Chuck Jones' autobiography. Mr. Blanc told a story about the first time Daffy appears in "Porky's Duck Hunt". Tex overheard Mel making fun of Leon who had a very slight lisp. They decided to use that voice for Daffy. To keep from getting fired, they sped up the playback and raised the pitch of the voice. Leon loved it! Chuck does not have many kind things to say about Leon. His opinion is that Leon sold the cartoon library to pay off gambling debts. The reason that Tex, Bob C, Bob M, Friz, and Chuck were able to be so creative is because they were left alone and could do anything as long at they made cartoons that would sell.

I grew up watching Bugs Bunny cartoons with my grandpa. I still love them. I have always loved Looney Tunes much more than Disney. Bugs was the blue collar everyman (or bunny). And the comedy was more for adults while Disney seemed more for younger children. A little too tame and white bread for me

The old Tom and Jerry and Flintstone cartoons by Hanna-Barbera were also excellent.
The old black and white Popeyes from the 1930’s (Fleischer Studios) remained popular for decades.
What Bugs brought to the game was a product that could be enjoyed by kids and adults, alike, because of the multidimensional nature of the character. Genius !

The book contains a plethora of historical information concerning the formation of the cartoon studios of the golden era - including Disney, MGM, and Warners. It's a well-researched book, containing many photographs - a must-have for any animation fan.

There was a full-length feature film a good while back called "Bugs Bunny, Superstar" and they spent a lot of time talking with Bob Clampett. It was in this film that he claimed to have created Bugs!
I love animation art. I have a pretty decent collection of cels. One of my favorites is an original pencil drawing by Chuck Jones of Sniffles. Cost me more that any other in the collection.
My favorite Bugs cartoon is "Bushy Hare," the one with Nature Boy. I fall off the chair every time I watch it! I also love the one with the Gremlin. "You gotta hit these block buster bombs just right...."
Cartoons by adults for adults. Gotta love it! That's why I also love all the Ward/Scott cartoons. Primo stuff!

I used to watch repeats in my 20s (it didn't hurt that the presenter was an attractive girl). They were on in the afternoon and this was the era of videotape so I recorded the shows and watched them later. I recall one episode where Porky is chasing an unwanted dog throughout his home. It seemed that Porky had a very long hallway. Something caught my eye so I rewound and froze that tape. In just one frame there was a cartoon nude! in another episode Speedy is singing in Spanish. My mother can understand Spanish and laughed. i asked her what he was singing.Something like "no fumar marihuana" Which I assume you can figure out. I suspect there were lots of such (for want of a better term) Easter eggs in the cartoons. My favourites were Bugs & Marvin.

Walt Disney's distribution agreement with RKO-Radio didn't begin until 1937. Before that, his cartoons were released through United Artists, starting in 1932, after three years of Columbia releases; they got Charles Mintz to replace him (after a pay dispute, he previously signed most of Walt's staff behind his back to continue producing "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" in 1927-- Universal dumped his unit for Walter Lantz two years later, so Mintz eventually signed with Columbia).

You have some confusion here in that some or the exterior stills of what you referred to as "Termite Terrace" which show portions of the water tower were shot on the lot at Burbank. When Warner Brothers acquired First National Pictures and their Burbank Lot in 1927 all feature production was moved ther, with The Jazz Singer (1927) being the last feature filmed at the original 1923 WB lot at Sunset and Gower. The Animation Department stayed at Sunset until the 1960's when the original lot was sold. Termite Terrace was at the old studio, which is now The Sunset Studios and also home to KTLA TV and Radio.

Leon Schlesinger’s Pacific Art And Title company did more than the opening and closing titles for movies. In the silent era, they made “dialogue” titles for SILENT movies. Disney was focused on REALISM in his animation. Walter Lantz was originally distributed by Winkler, and was hired to make Oswald The Lucky Rabbit cartoons when Winkler FIRED Walt Disney. Michigan J. Frog never had a name until Chuck Jones made up the name during a telephone interview with a reporter in the late 1950’s. And Bob Clampett was a friend of mine. You are NO Bob Clampett. Beany and Cecil started as a live, local PUPPET SHOW on KTLA Los Angeles, starring Daws Butler as Beany and Stan Freberg as Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent. You can look ALL THESE THINGS UP. THEY ARE ALL TRUE. When are you going to start getting your facts straight?

The best of Warner cartoons came during the 1950s, long *after* Schlesinger was gone...... And good riddance to him! Schlesinger's Merrie Melodies output in the 1930s and 1940s was soppy, saccharine-sweet and sickening, where several of the familiar characters *did not appear!*
