    Huckleberry Hound is the Porky Pig of Hanna-Barbera. Both were the first breakout stars of Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. respectively. Then their supporting characters, Daffy and Yogi, became more popular than Porky and Huck. And that's when both were relegated to the sidekick or supporting role.
    Great work on this series Dave! These are always so informative and thank you for the work you put into these.

      And then, later on, both Bugs and Scooby managed to overshadow even Daffy and Yogi, thus connecting Huck's sidekick days in Yogi cartoons even further to the Looney Tunes of old.
      Of course, now that WB actually owns Hanna-Barbera outright, it's even more hilarious to find this out.

    Yes, Huck seems to be one of those groundbreaking characters in animation that's also weirdly underrated. I never really liked that Sound Hound cartoon. I felt it generic enough that any HB character could have fit in there, and he was really REALLY acting out of character. What I do like is that in Jellystone they give him the highest ranking status being the mayor and all, almost a nod to how he was the first major TV HB cartoon star.

    • @kootunesscrewy

      That's because Sound Hound was a short that aired on Cartoon Network and Boomerang during commercial breaks.
      Tbh, the short was alright, though it wasnt as great as their Groovies and Nacho Bear shorts. I love the abstract artstyle in it, though.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kootunesscrewy The short does have that feeling of first officially commissioned piece from an animation student to put on their demo reel. I appreciate it in that sense and hate to harp on someone's work when they're getting started. Though there were much better shorts that utilized HB characters, especially "Thanks a Latte," a Droopy short that actually GOT what Droopy was about, unlike most of his television appearances up until that point. I just never liked the substance and writing of Sound Hound. He spends the entire short angrily stomping about and harassing everyone because the noise drives him nuts. Far from the slow to anger, easy going Huck we all know and love.

    I'm so happy for this. I am a fan of CN since a child and don't really judge shows without "trying" them. However I tend to be more skeptic of the more modern shows (post-2020).
    That means that I have avoided watching Jellystone, but when I finally did, it turned out quite interesting. Jellystone is meta-consious about Hanna-Barbera, placing many meta references throughout the show.
    I haven't grown up with Yogi bear and the other characters, so it's very interesting to know their histories

    • @mightyfilm

      That's the thing about Jellystone. By no means should ANY of that stuff work, but it does and beautifully at that. it gives a great compromise between classic HB cartoons and a more modern Chowder-esque style of humor (considering the creator of Chowder is Jellystone's main showrunner). I refer to it as "Thundercats Roar, but Good."

I guess I never thought he had been pushed back to second banana but with all that you talked about I can see how that can be. I feel for the poor hound but I can see that maybe Yogi should of been the main shows host when presented back when they wanted Yogi but the networks thought no he's too much like all the other bear characters and maybe later on Huckleberry might have shown through more like on how Yogi did. Just a thought. I would love to see Warner Bros. do a revival on all the Hanna Barbera shows from the 50's and 60's but bring them into a whole new era but still remain like they were in the older style and presented like the same as the shows back then but with new story plots.

      Yes and no. Distribution yes but not the copyright. Turner has the copyright to the MGM shorts, Hanna Barbera still has the copyright to their characters. That said, the copyright could transfer to Warner Bros or Turner regarding the HB shows since then Pink Panther for example MGM didn't have the original copyright to him but eventually the copyright did transfered to MGM.

    • @stephenholloway6893
      @stephenholloway6893 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure Warner approved those projects but if you noticed they still copyright credit to Turner with the MGM characters and Hanna Barbera to their characters. With my Pink Panther example in the 1993 series the original copyright for the character was still there despite DePatie Freleng no longer being active at that point. Point is while Warner could transfer the copyright of the characters to them so far they haven't done so to my knowledge Which is probably with few exemptions you don't see the properties Warner bought and owned in the same projects. Including the DC characters in this argument. Warner does distribution for those characters but they don't own the copyright to those characters either. I'm no copyright expert mind you but I would imagine that Warner chose not to transfer the copyright to them yet because of their long association with their respective owners (apart of the MGM characters which Turner did transfered the copyright to him).

    Nothing against Yogi, but I’ve always been and forever shall be a Huckleberry Hound fan. He was a more interesting character to me.

    6:20 Uh, I wouldn't TECHNICALLY consider "Dixie" Wolf to be "Antagonistic" in "BlackBoard Jumble", more like "At the wrong place at the wrong time" and "A teacher trying to teach a class to students who are being uncontrollable and unruly brats."
    It'd be nice if the creative staff at Warner Bros made more shorts for future Tom and Jerry series with the original unsung and underrated Tex Avery characters in their own headliner shorts. Like "Dixie Wolf", the Bulldog from the Droopy shorts and even Barney Bear.
    Not only would this be a good idea to reintroduce the T.A. characters to the Tom and Jerry fans, but also be a good idea to flush out the characters' personalities, backgrounds and origins.
    Just an idea if any WB creative staff are watching this or reading the comments!

    Guess they got rid of the old west theme for Huck since they came up with their actual western character Quick Draw McGraw a year after Huckleberry Hound was made.
