Signal & Tones: Andy Timmons - Fillmore™ 50 - “Welcome Home”

  • Playing through the NEW Fillmore™ 50 for the first time, Andy Timmons talks us through how he gets the sounds he used on the performance of his song, “Welcome Home”. He also plays some other sounds not used during the song, and offers his first impressions of the amp after having played the amp for an hour or so while starting to get to know it. Andy also goes through the various effects he’s using for each part of the song as well as a comparison between his Signature JHS AT pedal into the clean channel versus the HI Mode in the Fillmore, and adding a BB Pre to the HI mode to hear what hitting the input of the Fillmore a little harder can sound like. Great conversation discussing just some of the possibilities with the new Fillmore 50 in the framework of Andy’s great playing and songwriting.
    Recorded with Andy’ signature Ibanez AT-100 with DiMarzio Cruiser neck and middle pickups and a Dimarzio AT-1 bridge pickup, through his pedalboard and into the Fillmore 50 1x12 combo. Pedals used during this song were a Strymon Timeline Delay, Strymon Big Sky Reverb, Diamond Tremelo and a GNI Chorus. No other pedals were used during the performance. Mic’d with a Shure KSM 313 and a Shure SM57 and blended 50% each.
    Make sure to check out Andy’s Signal and Tones video for “Welcome Home” which goes over the signal path and sounds that Andy used to get the tones you hear in this video:

      Alvaro Sepúlveda Figueroa I think it would just be a Mesa Lonestar amp. Perhaps with some slight differences to the gain channel. He favoured the gain sound of the Angry Charlie over the gain channel of the Lonestar, so I suspect that if they were to make a signature amp they would voice the gain channel to be a little closer to the Angry Charlie.

    Very good sounding amp. With usable tones for us "non metal" guitarists! I sold my late 90's Mesa Boogie DC-5 50 watt head a couple of years ago. Clean channel had a big, warm, fat, round sound that was great for jazz, but it wasn't Fendery enough for me for the tones I was going for. And the gain channel was great for heavy high gain distortion, but after years of trying, I just could not get a usable drive sound for classic rock or jazz/rock fusion. So it was tough, but I had to sell it. But this new Filmore 50 amp has definitely peaked my interest into possibly getting back into the Mesa game.
    Also, the overdriven tone Andy got using his JHS AT pedal thru the normal channel was killer smooth!!! I have the original JHS AT pedal and man is that a great sounding overdrive/distortion pedal. You don't have to be Andy Timmons to get great tones using the AT pedal! You can get overdriven tones like that even thru very clean amps like my Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb amp. Big fan of Andy Timmons and the AT pedal!

    Seems like you could set channel one to be very clean and friendly towards different types of overdrive pedals, set channel two to get it's own great amp overdrive, and kind of have this huge pallet to mess around with. Pretty cool if you get asked to play lots of different types of music.

    Ive seen Andy demonstrate several amps now, and yet he always sounds like Andy. I reckon he could plug into a potato and make that sound amazing. However, I gotta say there is slight (ever so slight) brightness here that he didn't have before, and not sure Im digging it.

    • @jnh73
      @jnh73 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. A huge part of why Andy's pre-Fillmore tone appeals to me is it was vocal and punchy. That is, prioritizing the midrange. I recall an interview where he says on most amps (prior to using Lonestars) he would roll off the amp's treble completely. Don't get me wrong - it's still Andy, and therefore amazing. It's just... different.

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sal - agreed on Andy having great Tone in his hands. :D One thing to keep in mind/consider regarding brightness... You can most certainly adjust either Treble and/or Presence on the amp to create a warmer or brighter tone. Demo videos are like a photograph in time of sound whereas an actual amplifier in front of you presents an incredible range of possibilties to dial in tone exactly as you see fit. The Fillmore is not an incredibly versatile amp that is no exception to the Boogie reuptation of "having controls that work". Plenty of tone control on both sides of perfect in this amp. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @salpalacios6806
      @salpalacios6806 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yep there is a lot factors, maple neck, pickups and speakers, even the room. Im sure it can be dialed in to whatever you want. Was just noticing a very subtle difference in warmth and attack, not use to that in regards to Andy's signature sound. I would love to hear it with a guitar that has ebony/rosewood neck and perhaps a cabinet with v30's and im sure it would sound totally different. (kind of what you did for the TC demos) . BTW I like The simple layout (2 channels) less stuff to mess around with.

  • @wizardsouthJP
    @wizardsouthJP 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    so much for the myth that turning your mids down sounds terrible all the time, clearly the tones he's getting here with the mids rolled down is amazing. Not saying that works on every amp, but clearly on this amp, on the clean settings and dirty - it works.

    • @TheDmonet
      @TheDmonet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that has more to do with the "brutalz" metal kids who cut all their mids and then wonder why nothing cuts through.
      In Andy's case, he can just keep turning up and nobody in his band is going to tell him to turn down.

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's actually nearly a page on the MID control, but here's some of the relevant info, Rob... :):
      For rhythm playing in the CLEAN Mode, but really globally in all the Channels, a lower MID setting (7:30-10:00) scoops some of this
      midrange attack and makes the bottom end breathe more while letting the higher harmonics define the top end, producing more
      sparkle, chime and openness. This range will also make things more resilient and create an easier to play, more elastic feel on the
      strings. Single coil guitars work very well here for the slinky, rubber-band attack and bouncy bass character associated with Blues,
      R&B, Country and most clean styles.
      The middle region (10:00-1:00) is where the punch and attack begin to come on with more urgency and this is where mahogany
      guitars really like to see the MID set for adding the cut and definition. Here the top end begins to show itself in the mix of the MID
      controls’ spectrum and chording sounds start to chime and slash with a more forward and very present character.
      From there on up (1:00-5:30) the MID introduces an aggressive range of sounds that are still full, but quite forward as the dominant
      frequencies become those present under control of the MID. In this range you will likely have to increase the BASS to add back in the
      richness and warmth that gets overshadowed when the MID control is set high. If you like the attack and urgency found in this range
      of the MID, all the other controls (except maybe the MASTER, which you may have to back down as the sound gets more forward)
      may have to be set higher to keep up with the MID dominant curve. This is fine, although there will reach a point of diminishing return
      as the headroom in the preamp gets eaten up by this tonal arms race and you begin to clip the preamp with the high signal from the
      Tone control string.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found the Fillmore 50's manual via a link on a forum, as it was not visible on your website (two days ago). Unfortunately, the combination of my neuromuscular disorder's increased severity, the Fillmore 50 head's weight, and the position of the Fillmore 50's handle is such that I cannot consider purchasing it. I would have to go with a Mark V:25, and it is unlikely that I could afford one (the Fillmore 50 was a stretch).
      I may wind up with a Fryette Valvulator GP/DI, and I doubt that Randall would begrudge Steve a sale. 8?}

    • @mikefenton5634
      @mikefenton5634 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maton Maton I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. But the timeline has 2 sets of ins and outs to split the signal to stereo. Using only one of this sets of in and outs then it’s only a mono signal. Andy also uses a G2 switcher from Dan at The GigRig which handles all the switching and splitting of signals depending on how Andy sets it up.

    Nice amp but overpriced like most Mesa stuff. Plenty of good 50w 2 Channel combo's that will get you in the same sonic territory for half the price. These are selling for $3700 in Australia which is ridiculous for something that hasn't been hand built. I have an ENGL Thunder 50 Combo that's sounds as good as this and cost me $1400 new. If I got Andy to play through it then it would probably sound better! Don't get me wrong, I like Mesa amps and have owned a few, but would never buy one new because by the time they get imported over here they are way too inflated in price.

      :) I have an old music man 50 watt combo with one 12. 112 RD I think. Cost about $235 dollars in the 80s. Still sounds a lot better than $235...

      Ed Berger I’ve swapped out the speaker and some preamp valves so it sounds a lot better than it did out of the box.
      The clean is almost identical to my ears and the gain is a little more of the Marshall vein but comparable.

      Frank Stein They were good old amps, I worked in music shops back in the late 80’s and we used to stock a few of the MM range.
      The Fillmore reminds me a little of the old Boogie F-50 combo.

    Don't know if it's the amp and/or the guitar, but the sound it's too modern . Is it supposed to sound vintage?. I don't hear vintage at all. Perhaps the guitar and pickups chosen weren't exactly the best to demo this amp. And yes, it's overpriced!

      They've always been expensive. Back in the 70s you'd shell out a grand for a Mk 1.

      I see it online for $1699 USD. $1499 for the head. Still expensive.

    The problem with Andy is that he plays this ugly ugly Ibanez guitar. This lost in time super Strat shit.

      Oisin McPhillips what does that have to do with the fact that he plays the most ugly pointe guitar ? He is very good. But that ugly guitar keeps him from being bigger on the music scene.

      Silviu Stefan no. The guitar he plays has nothing to do with his popularity. You're stark raving mad if hou think that

    • @Dailyvids25
      @Dailyvids25 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oisin McPhillips OK. So it must be his music then. Don't you think that if you play for a better and bigger team you will have more exposure ? If not you must be stupid and I will talk to you no more.

      Oisin Mcphillips don't even give this guy the satisfaction of a response he's obviously just a troll.
