- A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1992 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Adventure Island.
Super Adventure Island was the third console game in Hudson's Wonder Boy spin-off series to be released in North America, coming out two months ahead of Adventure Island 3 on the NES.
Rather than further iterating on the improvements made by Now Production for Adventure Island II ( • Adventure Island II (N... ), Super Adventure Island marks a return to the basics introduced in the first 8-bit Adventure Island game ( • Hudson’s Adventure Isl... ). There are no dinosaurs to ride this time around, and progression is a strictly linear affair.
In this adventure, Master Higgins' girlfriend, "Jeanie Jungle," is turned to stone by a wizard named Dark Cloak, and Higgins has twenty stages to platform his way through in order to beat the bad guy and save his girl.
(But what was going on with the naming of his girlfriend in these games? In AI1, she was Leilani. In AI2, she was Tina. Now her name is Jeanie?)
Like in the earlier games, Higgins has to collect fruit to keep up his vitality gauge and skateboards still allow him to tear through stages at high speed. But, now he has a choice between two weapons - a throwing axe and a boomerang (weaker than the axe but can be thrown up or down) - and each can be upgraded. Collecting multiples of the same weapon will enable Higgins to throw up to three of that weapon in a row, and collecting four will turn it into a fiery projectile that can destroy rocks.
Aside from the boomerang, the only other notable changes to gameplay from the previous games are Higgins' ability to super jump and to duck.
The gameplay is fun, but it's a big step in the wrong direction coming off of Adventure Island II. It's a comparatively simple and easy game with only a small fraction of the content seen in AI1 and AI2. Back when it first came out, I managed to finish it over a single weekend rental, and while I enjoyed it, I couldn't help but be disappointed.
On the up side, the graphics put the SNES's hardware to excellent use. The character sprites are huge, especially in the impressive boss battles, and the use of color is often striking. The game paints a very pretty picture. The music is also a major high point. Yuko Koshiro's soundtrack is full of catchy tunes that take heavy inspiration from early 90s dance music. It sounds like Streets of Rage, and it suits the game perfectly.
I liked Super Adventure Island, but I never loved it like I did the NES games. It lacks substance and I'd rank it as one of the weakest games in the series overall.
Finally, here's a fun trivia tidbit: Super Adventure Island was created by "Produce!" Produce! was the developer behind several Super Bomberman games, Brainlord, and The 7th Saga. Weird combo, huh?

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
Super Adventure Island doesn't ever hit the heights that the NES games did, but that Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack is excellent.
The same guy did the Streets of Rage soundtrack?
@@Mohammed1000realYup!
It was Performed on the Sega Genesis portable.
Yuzo koshiro is a legend in my book. Also, this game is pretty cool. 😊
I like Super Adventure Island more than the NES games tbh.. Looks like im in thd minotity. lol
Probably one of my favorites from this series. The soundtrack is amazing; I always liked what Hudson games did with their sound design during this era. Everything just sounds so clear for SNES.
Oh man, the music in this is funky!
Y’know - For such a short game, it really does perfectly capture an arcade like experience that really appeals to me
This was the exact reason I loved this game as a kid too.
This game just feels like summer, you know?
The underwater level is low key patio music at dusk
@@cherokeefit4248 both of these guys get it
Maybe because it is!
I played this before school damn near every day , around 95 . Would leave the game on to save my progress . Times were good then , the sun shined different
@@freddiethurman I know exactly what you mean.
The soundtrack for this is INSANE. And I quite often like to bathe my ears in its excellence.
I wish they'd make an Adventure Island Collection for Modern Consoles along with Other Games by Hudson Soft
This soundtrack deff sounds like something that came straight out of sonic
0:48 I love how the second he lands, he starts running to save his girlfriend
The first video game i ever played, i was like 3 or 4, so it is also one of the first memory of my life. I remember since i didn't understand the concept of video games, i thougth somehow that the guy was me and that it was real.
I liked how they gave Ol boy more gear on the skateboard ! Remember, safety first!! Lol
I love Yuzo Koshiro's music. I think this game was probably my first exposure to his music.
It was Streets of Rage 1 for me. Dude's an amazing composer.
@@Dorian_Scott And did you hear his music in Sol Cresta? It sounds almost *EXACTLY* like the music in the original Terra Cresta.
@@SolCresta3405 No. Because I have never even heard of those games lol.
If you love his music so much, why don't you marry it?
@@guidadiehl9176 Reminds me of what Sayo Yuuki said to Kohtaro Kuga in regards to Yukari Horiguchi… But hey, I like other music as well, not just Yuzo Koshiro.
If I'm a type 2 diabetic jonesing for a hummer on top of a rock pillar and you turn my woman to stone.... Everybody getting killed on that island
i cant think of a sentence explaining something so perfectly like this
I guess the main character of this game is the mascot for hudsonsoft.
He has mastered the mario jump mario would be so proud 😂
I have this game and currently playing too by chance. It’s truly a gem due to its music and easy style of game play. I didn’t beat it yet but it’s really short
*Amazing music and sound effects!* ❤ ⭐️ ❤ ⭐️ ❤
Ahhhh this unlocks some memories I had forgotten! The music in this game went crazy!
It is criminal how far you got without getting hit once. Well done.
13:36 - This song really has a tropical feeling
Yes I did it I beat the game of super adventure island on snes and I did 10 Times.
I still think about this soundtrack. My brother and I played this game so much.
Nick Arcade brought me here, especially the Nick GaS and Paramount+ reruns!
Hudson when his gf got stoned was like "come on man, i was just about to score!"
That soundtrack has a jam that I can jam with.
Leave it to the one and only Yuzo Koshiro to make spectacular music for games like this! 😊
Its all fun a games until Ghastly shows up and turn your girlfriend into stone 0:14
If Ghastly and MagiKoopa had a child
11:17 - Some of the "Wow" and "Hey" sounds on this stage were similar to the action 52 samples, probably because it was stolen from this game.
A short but sweet game.
I rented this Game For a weekend ando wow!!!! A piece of Fine Art!!
Noticed the music change for the SNES game from the NES series is drastically different. Almost had that hip hop acid jazz new Jack swing vibe. It’s cool for the different attempt try. Not sure if it works for the people who grew up on the series
Love this game
was difficult at that time for me as child
I like the sort of hip music 🎶. I remember this growing up.
I remember beating this game with save states. As a kid I could never get past the first world because of the boss.
This version felt like it was loading like a CD rom game, like long pauses between stages and the soundtrack would fade in before the action. It’s a good game but I prefer the TurboGrafx-16 version over this.
7:16
...Streets of rage? Is that you?
I wish they didn't remove the "run" function. This game feels relatively reminiscent to the "Joe & Mac" series IMO.
If I had a nickel for every time Mr. Popo turned my girl to stone...I'd just have the one nickel, but it would be weird that it happened at all.
the music of this game makes me remember the Sonic CD sound tack, specialy in the boss fights of this game
i forgot this existed.
very early snes release. guess they didn't know how to utilize the tech yet. i remember renting it and feeling underwhelmed.
I remember this game being hard as balls if you died once and lost that boomerang upgrade. I didn't remember how much this soundtrack slaps though got damn
Miy dificil yo lo pase x 1994, y nunca mas lo jugue, mejor adv island de nes
16:43 Epic bellyflop
Okay...so I just watched a playthrough of The New Adventure Island on the TG-16 and now I'm looking at this. While I think this one has better graphics...it feels as if some of the games soul is missing. The other games (Including Wonder Boy) all have the same...look or maybe feel to them that I'm just not getting here. Also the some of the sound effects are absolutely grating.
Addendum- I don't care for the players character model, the floating weapons, no eggs, the sound enemies make when they fall off screen, and the music...is not Adventure Island. The TG-16 landed Master Higgins run, had good emotional response (fist in the air), he looks fantastic in 16-bits without moving too far away from his old 8-bit self. This one I'm afraid misses the mark for me big time.
(11:02) The music in this level kinda sounds like _"It takes two to make this thing go right~!"_
7:15 My favorite. I feel like I could spit some dope rhymes on that.
Sht
@@0_o--- It took me two months, but I got some rhymes to spit over that track.
7:15 "I'm Master Higgins, I got the biggins, dig it, I'm built to rumble, I'm master of the jungle, yo, I got a girl named Tina, got curves like Athena, makes my blood run through my vena, yo, but then she turned into stone, left me all alone, right when I was in the zone, yo, so now the culprit Dark Cloak thinks I'm in a vise, but I'm anything but nice, yo" (freestyle ends on 7:35)
@@LightStreak567 If the rhyme fits
Game 🎮 Over 😂
So nostalgic
Snes games had killer music especially super aleste
Not my favorite Adventure Island but it's got quite a nice soundtrack!
as a child I spent a lot of hours on this game and I never got very far...and now I know they game is only about 30 minutes long
How did I never know this game existed
Master Higgins don't want Tina anymore 😭
Because of that, I put this game on F trashy tier!!! (I am joking.)
Splendid video.
13:54 i never beat this stage and i rage quit forever
Alguien sabe cómo la puedo encontrar en mi Nintendo Switch
This game is pretty terrible, but the music is some of the best on the whole system!
Isn’t the SNES version the easiest Adventure Island game in the series?
Also, the eels look like they came out of E.V.O. Search For Eden game (or is it vice versa?)
irmão tudo bem qual é o nome do emulador que você usa.
It's like you're playing Danny DeVito as a kid..
Hey guys I never played the game of super adventure island before.
I still enjoy the Game Boy and NES versions myself. This one was the weakest in the series, for sure.
It's a SNES game but with the NES gameplay stile.
Game seems to try real hard to put those throwing hammers in places you don't want them to be.
It's very fast !
good old videogame.
+NintendoComplete Today is my Birthday!
The soundtrack kicks, but the gameplay looks like a huge step back from Adventure Island 2. Especially the bosses - they're pathetic, they die pretty much instantaneously to any sort of fully upgraded weapon.
Yahoo I beat the game of super adventure island.
Owned this game as a kid and hated. As soon as I realized there was like 100 levels I was like Fuck this!!
I don’t want to sound like a hater but it’s just my opinion. I never got into adventure island on the NES or SNES. I wanted to because a lot of people mention it and I knew some people who had at least one from the NES series but I always found it so cheaply made and corny and didn’t grab my attention. Imagine, I grew up playing mega man and super Mario and run n gun/shmups games and this always felt like a cheap Mario clone with no oomph or action just a game to have kids entertained. It was hard to say wow I want it or want to play to the end. The first adventure island one was repetitive and when I saw 2 and 3 recycling the same thing I knew I wasn’t interested in the series. Years later I saw it for Super Nintendo I gave it a chance to see the 16bit upgrades and graphics and nope didn’t do a thing for me. I prefer Bonk over it and I wasn’t a fan of that either. Joe and Mac felt like a clone of adventure island but doing what those lacked. Now looking back at all these games and long plays I still agree bonk is better and I may have over looked it as a kid but by then I was getting into super ghouls and ghosts and mortal Kombat and other games that these platformers felt lack they lacked entertainment and what Mario has that made it great. Couldn’t get into it but notice everyone praises adventure island. But I feel like it may have been the child in people back then that this appealed to. I still find it boring sorry, hard to go from Mario, donkey Kong country, contra action and mega man x series to this :(
What’s with not getting the pickaxe?
getting the axe is like a downgrade of weapon from boomerang
the final boss didn't make a bit of sense lmao
This game sounds like Streets of Rage 2, obviously Koshiro was involved. I prefer NES versions...those games had some dark stuff that is lost here.
Do legendary wings nes next
Please
Put this on the Switch pleeeeease
El cRapulinita
KONAMI!!!
The ONLY good thing about this game was the music.
this versión its a weird one id prefer the nes
hate how he runs in place
0:21 - ahh, there's some good, old-fashioned, thinly-veiled racist caricature.
