Making a Reclaimed Outdoor Sitting Bench ( from an old door)

  • Modern Sitting Bench from an old door. Comment in the description if you have any ideas what i could make with the other side. I used some 2" wood screws and Construction Adhesive to fasten the slats together. I choose the adhesive over the wood glue because it adheres to the painted surface better. if you use pallet wood to build this of course you can wood glue! For the finish i used the Japanese wood preserving technic called " Shou Sugi Ban" and to seal the charred surface i coated it with 2 coats of Boiled linseed oil.
    A big thanks to all my patrons especially Jedidiah Shultz and Sithis Michaelis!

    This is awesome! Its like a reclaimed Nelson bench! Using the same methods you could make a whole set of furniture including tables and chairs. Or make a box with slotted top that would double as a side table. Everyone needs more storage :)

    Very nice project from reclaimed wood and the video is also super cool! Although, it seems like you mixed up too many things aesthetically. You kept the green paint and then exposed the edges so we got natural wood color (so far so good) and then you removed the outer paint and brought a new context with the burned look and then I can also see some burning in the inside layers mixed with the paint. So, I would suggest you wether keeping the green + natural wood edges or scraping all the paint and had burned each layer to get the black look inside as well as in the outside and keeping (or not) the edges in wood natural color. :) I can see this was very experimental but still worth criticising and maybe give you a different perspective.

    • @Ollaris
      @Ollaris  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Get Hands Dirty First and foremost thank you Cris it means a lot to me that you like video and the project too. I try to find my editing and shooting style but its not easy to figure all this without any kind of photography background, and feedback is very hard to get in this segment of YT. About the project: yes it is a bit to cluttered I didn't wanted to remove all the paint because i thought it looks kind of cool how it was aged. After I assembled the whole bench I didn't liked it anymore, but there was no turning back at that point, so as an experiment I burnt the outside, but I didn't get deep enough between the slats to get all the paint off. So yes you are totally right and thank you for your honest feedback and I look forward to more comments like this!

    Hi! Great idea but did you leave the end grain on the seat and legs (from the bottom) unfinished? The moisture will get in from there and swell the wood and it'll break/look bad. And it will happen really soon, too. Also, putting glue on painted surface - it doesn't have much point? Even if it'll glue it will only glue two layers of paint together? Sorry I couldn't put my words less bluntly :)

    Looks good, but I have a question. Why do people in the last time use so often old wasted wood? Is this really good wood and is it worth to use it? Is it a question of price or is it because of
    environmental sustainability?

    • @Ollaris
      @Ollaris  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christian Ueckert Thanks. In my opinion and my case: no its not good wood. Its mostly because it environmental friendly and I don't wanted to burn it. So I needed a project to use it. And that's was the outcome. I think in most cases its a money and accessibility question.
