Making a Rustic Reclaimed Table & Bench // DIY Shou Sugi Ban Wood Finish (2019)

- I was commissioned to make this rustic reclaimed kitchen table and bench for a wedding gift. The wood was reclaimed rustic fir from a family home, so there was lots of significance to the family.
To finish the wood I used a shou sugi ban technique, which is a way to finish the wood by first charred wood. After the wood was charred and scraped with a wire brush, I finished the wood with a water based polyurethane. Shou sugi ban is a great way to preserve and finish a wood table

All this video needs is some marshmallows! Really great video and project, Kris! And the shou sugi ban came out perfect!
Thanks man, my garage does still smell like a camp fire
Wow, that table is awsome! and it seems like your son had a great time too. Well done my friend!
Thanks for watching!
Great Project Kris!
Did you have any warping problems with burning the table top?
Not so far. The C-channel helps with that.
This turned out gorgeous!!
Thanks, Daniel. It also has unreal texture. Super happy with the finished product.
Mortgage & Mitre I just got a lead on a boatload of reclaimed fir so this video was perfectly timed!
Great job!
Lay's DIY thanks. Super happy with the outcome
Nice work dude!
Hubbell Woodshop thanks, sir. Can’t wait to see your first video!
Another great video Kris! Colin over at Windsor doesn't have a wide belt sander to run that top through after all that epoxy filling?! LOL.
Might have to go visit that Colored forest please just south of me. I hear they do a lot of epoxy stuff
Mortgage & Mitre Sorry, i just fell asleep...Did you say epoxy?
Nice job! Quick question, after torching and using a wire brush to remove the ash, did you come back and sand again before applying the poly?
Thanks! So I used the poly and then sand it between coats to build up layers. Typically with 400 grit
@@furthernorthfab thanks!
I was just wondering what that tool was called you used for pulling the nails out was and where you got it?
Nail puller pliers by Crescent.
Nice! Were there any issues with the epoxy while burning?
Matt S it wasn’t actually bad. Heating it up and scraping it with the. Wire brush helped it kinda flow into the grain
did you make the legs yourself or did you buy online if so could your provide a link ? thank you
Sean Alequin the link is in my description
