I downloaded Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition (PS4) like 6 months ago, for $5. I seldom buy digital games, but for that price, & the way it looked right up my alley, I got it quickly. I played it, & I must say this is the *best* old school JRPG style game I've played in many a-year. *EDIT:* I even bought it again physically thanks to Limited Run Games, with Rise of the 3rd Power on the same disc. *Thanks for shining some light on it.* I loved Ara Fel as I would an SNES game from the golden years.

I downloaded this game a month or so ago on the Switch. I really enjoy the throwback look and feel. As someone who grew up with the SNES, it's great to see good games still maintain this style across so many genres. I almost perfer this over the newer games...but maybe that's just the old man in me. Thanks for covering and sharing your perspective.

In that case I'd suggest to check out Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes as well. They're upcoming indie JRPGs with a pixel art style :-)

I got this game years ago for $1, loved it and I supported their Kickstarter for their next game Rise of the Third Power. I think I remember hearing Ara Fell was made on a much older RPG Maker which is why it looks so good with pixel graphics, the more recent RPG Makers often just look like mobile games rather than SNES.

There was an old "demo" version that was around for ages before they finally managed to pull an actual release, then some time ago they did a massive update with a new engine. So it's not actually an RPG Maker game anymore, it now runs on Unity.
I'm not entirely sure if i'm remembering this correctly, but i remember them saying that engine will also be used for RotTP (naturally, they'll likely end up modifying it further by the time that releases).

I've been searching for something to scratch the "Golden Sun" Itch since Golden Sun came out. This game does it. Everyone says so many things about other games, like, say, octopath traveler, or bravely default, but those games, well...
Sure, Golden sun is a JRPG, but these new AAA ones are literally all the same in story. There's not much new happening in octopath that I've never seen before and the entire game is on-rails with zero exploration.
This game not only rewards exploration, but also has -things- to do, to interact with your environment and be a part of the world, with semi-zelda puzzles, and i'm just so happy to be playing this.
Hell, with the sass in the dialogue and the really interesting weapon/armour system, there's a part of me that thinks that this game is even getting better than other rpgs, because no items are really wasted or languishing in the inventory forever!

I use to be big in the RPG Maker scene back in the day. Most of the graphics displayed here are from I believe a website called FSM or First Seed Material. There are definitely some custom visuals happening here but I’d estimate 80% of it was not made by the devs.

I just played Ara Fell earlier this year and enjoyed it quite a bit. I grew up in the NES and SNES era and games like this bring me back to my childhood with it's 16 bit aesthetic. I really enjoyed the setting on a beautiful island in the sky with verdant forests filled with magic. The characters are mostly likable too. The thing I like most about Ara Fell is that it doesn't try to do too much. It stays close to the tried and true turn-based JRPG formula that made games like Final Fantasy 4-6, Dragon Quest 5-6, Chrono Trigger and others from the 16 bit era so successful without getting too abstract or heavy handed in telling it's story as JRPGs tended to do in the PS1 era. It's short and sweet, which I really appreciate now that I'm an adult with a career. It takes you on a fun and engaging adventure that wraps up in 20-25 hours. If you like RPGs in the 16 bit style you should give Ara Fell a shot.

Thank you for showcasing smaller games as well. Ara Fell is an awesome game and I myself replayed it 3 times until now.
I really never needed to grind at all. If you go explore the whole areas and find all items, do the side quest and the game would be tastily difficult in some spots but will never leave you behind.

It is so beautiful and great. Was glued for two 13h sessions until I beat it. The female co-founder also is quite nice in response to feedback given and discussion on it in general. This was a passion project... and love was given into its each aspect, that's why it felt so beautiful to me. The characters, environment, music (the damned beautiful music), story, lore, all of it and the gameplay too.

Ah yes. Underrated game. Played it last year on PC. Great writing and worldbuilding. Combat is a bit simplistic and repetitive but it isn't a huge issue given the length of the game. It doesn't have enough time to get stale.
If I had to find negatives - the story isn't going to take you by surprise. You'll probably see every twist coming a mile away. Predictable doesn't mean bad - it's enjoyable and engaging (which is what the story needs to be to do its job).
The game is even more impressive considering that it was developed by 3 people. A true passion project. I'm glad I stumbled upon it while browsing Steam one day.

Should be noted the console versions all run on Unity (as does the Steam version, which was updated for free). Still, there's some RPG Maker games that don't really look it, especially on the newer versions. It just requires some artists to make the custom assets and script coders if you want special mechanics not included in the base, so it can only be done by devs that have an actual budget to work with (or a lot of time and talent).

Wow, nice! I've had this on my Steam wishlist for so long that I kinda forgot why I added it, but I actually just bought it about a week ago, because it was dirt cheap for their fall/Black Friday sales. I was kinda wondering if I even should've bought it, but now I'm really looking forward to playing it :)
(It really is crazy just what you can get these days for a couple dollars. This generation of kids probably don't even realize how good they have it. We used to get a handful of games a year and now some days out of the blue you get a bundle for a couple bucks or you have some companies/publishers/devs literally giving them away. What a time to be alive....;)

I finished this game a few years ago. Truth be told the level design and exploration enjoyment puts even the best snes games to shame, and I totally agree about the music.
However its kinda short, which is understandable for an indie game like this using rpg maker, especially with the level of detail put into every darn tile of every darn area.
BUT the shortness irks me because the trailer foe the game, which actually sold me, which almost NEVER happens, really made me think this game would be a true epic in scope. But everything happened just too fast for me to really see it that way.
I did not find it grindy or difficult though, mind you, I played it years ago and maybe that element has changed. I also believe the dev added some post-game content since that I haven't tried, I forget if there was an announcement.
Have you tried Last Dream? Nowhere near as good as Ara in terms of level design or music. But much better gameplay mechanics, more customization, more replay value, much longer overall, and I think the story might be deeper overall too but I honestly haven't finished it myself yet. I keep telling myself I should but had to put it down due to a move, lost access to my pc for months, and just haven't started again after the move

RPG Maker is a fine framework for a game but so few developers know how to alter the framework into an engine that suits their game. Plus they are not willing or able to make their own game assets. Making a good unique game requires a lot more work than most people are willing to perform

Its simply a masterpiece. I heard there was a sequal too but critics say it was a big failure
    Also the ending is amazing

I really value my time as i grow up so longer/grindy games have become less and less appealing. This game does look fun though 🙂

Love the ending, too bad it's underrated :(

Nice, added to my game to try list. But, going for the PlayStation ver. My hand numb and my finger hurt for playing on switch (pokemon fault 😂)
