This video started off as the "history of" segment of what would have been an episode of The Game Collection. However the story was so fascinating and complex that it eventually took over the whole review! I decided to split this off into its own video, and will follow-up with a review soon, as well as a discussion video on my thoughts about why Nintendo refuses to officially localize mother 3.
@@chuganoga1908 , honestly, the whole Mother/Earthbound Trilogy is overhyped even more so than the Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, or Final Fantasy franchises and that it should not have been made at all.
@@paxhumana2015 mother 3 had a good narrative and story while offering some new ideas to the format while Earthbound was just more exploration than anything. Overall yes they are overhyped (specifically Earthbound) but they deserve some love for their unique design in the genre

Sometimes I wish we had been able to afford game magazines back in the day, but then I'm reminded of tragedies like this and realize ignorance is bliss. My heart didn't start getting broken by non-existent localizations until much later on. I look forward to hearing your theories about why the localization never happened. I always hear the same few ideas thrown around about profitability, copyright issues, or controversy, so it'll be interesting to get your insights and thoughts on it. (Also Hackers is a great movie.)
I love videos like this where I learn a little about the behind the scenes. I saw EarthBound for the first time in Nintendo Power where they had an extensive layout. However, I never owned it, because I was too young to buy my own games, and had to be selective with what to ask my parents I wanted. It wasn't until the SNES Mini that I was able to play EarthBound. It's a game that still holds up. Haven't been able to play Mother 3 though. I will someday.
This is my Favorite game, hands down. The first ever game that made me cry even though I can only count me crying in front of a piece of art a handful of times. I purchased an official Japanese copy of this game even though it was pretty expensive just because it means so much to me! This is the game that helped me with my depression, the game that taught me to be kind to others, the game that helped me on my path to be bilingual (French/English). But most importantly, it's the game that helped me shape who am I today and for that... Thank you Shigesato Itoi.
Thanks for sharing your story! EarthBound was that game for me, actually. I've got a couple more Mother 3 videos just around the corner, I hope that I can help bring more people to trying it out! :)
Really liking these recent videos! Much better to have in depth discussion of one deep topic thango over bite sized headlines and news. Glad you switched focus!
Honestly, the fact that the very first Fire Emblem game just recently got an official localization last year gives me some hope for Mother 3, since if Nintendo was willing to localize a game that old (despite the fact there was already a remake) then Mother 3 could have a chance. Though at the same time, the issue with Mother 3 i feel is based mostly around copyright and music, since Mother 3's soundtrack has alot of music that comes from actual songs, and thats a whole copyright issue there. There's also the magypsies and that controversy, but as someone who's trans myself, I don't think they're the main reason for the game to not be localized, they may be a part, but I think its also mainly due to copyrighted music
It’s most definitely a copyright issue. I remember playing Mother 3 for the first time and getting into a battle and immediately thought “this sounds familiar” and it turned out that wouldn’t be the first time I’d think that in my play through. Licensing those songs is going to be too much of a hassle for Nintendo especially since some of them are from particularly known labels. Who knows tho its possible they could rerelease the game with a new soundtrack one day
One of my favorite games. I wish it would get an official localization.

Great material! I love Mother 3 - one of the most important game in my life. I have one request for future material: would you reduce the audio compression settings, please? At the moment, it is a bit too strong and a vocal pumping effect is created. Sometimes it eats your sounds for a second. I love hearing about the inner workings of game developers and the people and events behind games and how/why they came out/didn't come out. Second, this surprises the hell out of me. That they wouldn't localize it when it's obviously easy money. but also why they would allow fans to make their own copy. Nintendo, unless I'm mistaken, is very much against that kinda thing. Or am I mixing the up with Sony? Or is it both? Hard to keep it all straight.

Oh interesting! I'd read comparisons to a zip-disk but MiniDiscs are freaking rad! It's quite a shame that it didn't end up becoming a hit. I do wonder though why it could only hold 128 MB, according to other stuff I read. Seems like it would have been able to hold more. Thanks for the correction!
@@SuperDerek Yeah they're pretty neat. Also the 64DD was meant to be released in the later part of 1997 but for unknown reasons it was delayed and delayed.
I've always adored role playing games I've been spending my time in lock down (thanks covid) by playing through Falcom's Trails game and there now one of my favorite series, there's many underrated gems out there to be discovered. The mother series definitely has a place on my ever growing to play list. Great video.
I've been thoroughly enjoying my time playing and reviewing my way through the Trails in the Sky and Crossbell series. Currently playing Trails to Azure, which will be the next review after Mother 3! What a wonderful series! :D
Great video. I got to experience the game the best way possible by buying an English reproduction cart playing it on my Game Boy Player using the GB interface mod on my 29 inch Trinitron CRT.
Heck yeah, twins! I played mine using the GameBoy Player and GBI with an OSSC doing the scaling to my capture card. My PVM isn't hooked up right now, unfortunately. That footage will be used in my upcoming review. :)
I've yet to play Mother 3 but I ended up buying a repro of it for the GBA at a retro store. I intend to dive into it at some point I'm just glad I have it on a cart and can ad it to my collection.
I kind of feel like we had a lot of moments of potential hope for this game, but they never followed through with it. 2018 was definitely the potential peak, thanks to the AVGN covering Earthbound and Chuggaaconroy doing his 10 year anniversary Let’s Play, but that sadly led to absolutely nothing. Every so often I see translated GBA copies at gaming conventions, so maybe one of these days I’ll suck it up and get one
I wouldn't spend much for one. They're cheap Chinese-manufactured bootlegs, kind of like the fake Pokemon GBA cartridges in circulation. Pop onto eBay and snag the cheapest one you can get that ships from within the US, you can have a copy for $15 shipped. That's what I did and it worked for my play-through on a GameBoy Player. :)
I was very young but I still remember that huge SNES box in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I really wanted it but I didn't own a SNES and there was no justification to get one since it was the end of the systems life on the market.
Still crossing my fingers to this very day. I can still see the spread in a Nintendo power of very minor details of earthbound 64 very vividly etched in my man; a boy standing next to a pond. My young self was very confused and in awe at the direction….
Why do these guys read scripts for these vids? It drives me so crazy seeing this guy's eyes going back and fourth trying to read the script. Why not just speak from the heart?? I mean, if you are really into this stuff it should be pretty easy to talk about right?
I prefer to have scripts for adding closed captions to videos. Some videos I do go off the cuff, but other times I benefit from having organized my thoughts first.
I remember playing and loving Earthbound, and thinking it was amazing with little flaws. Then I played Mother 3 and it was Earthbound perfected. Love the series.
@@IAm-zo1bo Earthbound is one of the most charming games I have ever played. Mother 3 just seems better to me in a lot of ways. I'm still hopeful we get some kind of collection so more people can enjoy the series.
Mother 1 and 2s absence from the Switch online service really makes me wonder if they’re planning on a worldwide rerelease of all three games like squenix did with the mana collection. The justification for their absence being that they wouldn’t want to cannibalise potential sales with a “free” option available.
The story behind Mother 3 is amazing on the fans' part but NoA's continued silence has always been baffling. I had always wondered why they didn't just make an upgraded DS port and release it in say... 2008ish? But hey, NoA is under new management now, and we're getting revivals of Advance Wars, new 2D Metroid, and RPGs are more popular than ever, so maybe we'll get Lucas' adventure officially soon.
It's *possible* but unlikely... I think I'll have another video before terribly long talking about why that is though. But hey, there's always room for hope!
@@SuperDerek My secret farfetched hope is that they could do what NIS did with the Geofront localizations and just hire Tomato, tweak his script to whatever standards Nintendo may need to change... If it were anyone but Nintendo I might believe in that happening xD
I rented earthbound several times and took the book out of the big box in store and convinced the cashier it was 12 bucks and to sell it to me. I was like 12.also put the price tag over the perental advisory on the bone thugs and harmony cds
Wow he grew up! Ain’t watched this guy in year’s but I recognized that hair immediately! Lost some baby fat and the voice got deeper. Got a English version of Mother 3 on GBA a long time ago! I got about a little over a couple of hour’s into the game and then I couldn’t get the hang of charging enemies and gave up on it! Got one question were is that tacky sheet you had over that apartment window and that very worn sofa?!!
Keto has been working wonders over the last several months! Glad to read it's paying off! :) As for the old setup, had to move away a few years back, and I've been trying to really work on my space a lot more. I think it's come together really nicely!
Yeah I remember the Earthbound big boxes for sale. The game came out at the wrong time for me. I was so focused on Mario games and the latest in graphics and tech that Earthbound didn’t interest me. Although I played Super Mario RPG, it really wasn’t until I discovered FF7 late in 1999 that I realized I really liked JRPGs. But then of course I moved to the PS2 and GameCube and didn’t give SNES games another thought until around 2015 or so. Oh well.
The audio on this has a bit too much compression and hard limiting. The attack is way too high so the beginning of some words gets cut off. Derek can you fix this for future videos? I’d be willing to help if you need!
Thanks for the feedback, there was definitely something up with the audio this time around sadly, but it should be resolved in Mondays video. Thanks for the feedback! :)
So fun fact I couldn't quite squeeze into the video: EarthBound 64 was actually going to be on both a disk and a cartridge, you would have to put both into your N64, and would have been closer to 100 mb. It was really ambitious!
The story of EarthBound 64 was reused for Mother 3 on Gameboy Advance. There were playable demos for EarthBound 64 but those discs haber not been located unfortunately.

It makes me laugh when people cry about game trailers that are only cinematic in nature when I remember the same euphoria you described over a small screenshot.
Fucking amazing video 😁 Mother 3 will never die, at least in our hearts!
Yea
**Wipes away tears**
And for the record, I bought Earthbound new as full price back in the day. ...or rather, my father did. But that is splitting hairs.
That Hackers footage is mood right there
Quick correction. The 64DD's disks were a magneto-optical disc technology. Basically the same as the MiniDisc
Now we can finally use PK Claus in this fan translation
What an awesome channel.
Mother 3 may get the US release in a way we're not expecting
Same here! A repro is how I played it most recently, it definitely felt right. :)
5:51 That's Stephen Georg!
Has anyone else noticed the odd audio mixing? Like his voice fades up at the start of every word and out at the end??
If mother franchise got a modern remake the game would sales would be insane
I recently picked up a repro mother 3 from eBay. Can confirm, it is amazing!
I was very young but I still remember that huge SNES box in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I really wanted it but I didn't own a SNES and there was no justification to get one since it was the end of the systems life on the market.
I haven't played any of the mother/eaeth bound games, where is the best place to buy/download a copy?
Great video!
Still crossing my fingers to this very day. I can still see the spread in a Nintendo power of very minor details of earthbound 64 very vividly etched in my man; a boy standing next to a pond. My young self was very confused and in awe at the direction….
It's incredible how similar yet different EarthBound 64 and Mother 3 ended up being
The mother fans are so similar to Splatoon fans. We are super hyped for the release of Splatoon 3. :)
5:51 Is...Is that Stephen Georg of StephenPlays/StephenVlog???
Great and informative video, but what is with the audio? It sounds like it spikes up and down at least for me.
Noise gate issues it seems. Thanks for bringing it up, I'll have it sorted out in the next video. :)
@@SuperDerek Still enjoyed the video, my dude!
Some videos I do go off the cuff, but other times I benefit from having organized my thoughts first.
why have Nintendo not made a Kid Icarus sequel? This video reminds me of my hope for Grandia 4
uhhh they did.... for the 3ds...
I got earthbound when it was new , I was 12 at the time. I'm also a long time berserk fan.....the struggle is real
As a Hunter X Hunter fan, I feel like I've got a long road of struggle ahead of me. T_T
I'd like to play this
Great video, I just threw you a sub.
great vid!!
I remember playing and loving Earthbound, and thinking it was amazing with little flaws. Then I played Mother 3 and it was Earthbound perfected. Love the series.
I still love the charm of earthbound more and the music
@@IAm-zo1bo Earthbound is one of the most charming games I have ever played. Mother 3 just seems better to me in a lot of ways. I'm still hopeful we get some kind of collection so more people can enjoy the series.
I really like this one. Looking forward to the review
Thanks! I hope to have it out next Friday! This Friday though I'll be talking about why Nintendo never brought it West. :)
Derek. I too, am named Derek. And I too, have red (orange) hair.
Nearly poo’d myself thinking Mother 3 released for the Switch then I realized I just misread the title 😞
I’ve always wanted to play this game….
Time for them to get Mother 2 on Nintendo Switch Online. They've got to know that demand is there, by now.
Mother 1 and 2s absence from the Switch online service really makes me wonder if they’re planning on a worldwide rerelease of all three games like squenix did with the mana collection. The justification for their absence being that they wouldn’t want to cannibalise potential sales with a “free” option available.
I would buy it in an instant.
I sure hope so!!!
Why is the audio bad in this video? Broken Mic?
My GOXLR's noise gate was messed up. Replaced it, should be way better in more recent videos.
Reminds me of miles edgeworth investigations 2.
...
I thought there was an official release announced and I didn't knew....
Don't do that to me :(
I rented earthbound several times and took the book out of the big box in store and convinced the cashier it was 12 bucks and to sell it to me. I was like 12.also put the price tag over the perental advisory on the bone thugs and harmony cds
The audio is wonky.... sounds like a compressor is triggering on most fricative consonants. Maybe less ratio?
My GOXLR's noise gate was messed up. Replaced it, should be way better in more recent videos.
@@SuperDerek Nice!
Maybe I just need to play the fan translation. I would just much rather play it officially
As for the old setup, had to move away a few years back, and I've been trying to really work on my space a lot more. I think it's come together really nicely!
First Erathbound, now Mother 3, I think I'm going to ry them againeven if I don't like the inventory system.
4:00 - So you're saying EarthBound 64 would've had sixteen times the detail? ;^)
So fun fact I couldn't quite squeeze into the video: EarthBound 64 was actually going to be on both a disk and a cartridge, you would have to put both into your N64, and would have been closer to 100 mb. It was really ambitious!
I must have missed it. Where/how exactly can you play the game? 64 emulation?
The story of EarthBound 64 was reused for Mother 3 on Gameboy Advance. There were playable demos for EarthBound 64 but those discs haber not been located unfortunately.
@@SuperDerek excellent thanks. I think I’ve probably already got the rom somewhere, and will jus grab the patch! Thanks for the vid and info.
you need to collab with NintenDrew to make SuperDerek NintenDrew
I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. The version I'm emulating has messed up sound. I really want to play this one.
Download the Japanese game & a separate translation. Just get another Rom. I found one this year no problem..
Also you didn't change any settings in emulator did you? What emulator are you using & does another game work fine?
@@drowningin Yea, I just need to find the right Rom. Nobody (understandably) wants to really say publicly where to get the right ones, but I just need to buckled down and find it. Its on my mini-SNES with hakchi, I forget the actual emulator, but I believe it was the same as just about all of my other SNES roms. I don't recall changing any settings.
Edit: Although isn't it a DS game? I think that's where things went sideways for me. All emulators I tried left it with that messed up sound.
@@jameshitt3263 Its a GBA game. Can SNES mini play GBA? Man I need to upgrade mine
What kind of messed up sound? The game has pretty good music but the compression does sometimes make it hard to appreciate. The music I used in this video was remastered, even the audio on a GameBoy Advance has a bit of hiss in the background. It took some getting used to, for me.
Give us Mother 3!
I am going to cosplay Claus
Nintendo not releasing or teasing Mother 3 is my reason why I stopped supporting Nintendo. I am still waiting til this day.
In terms of best rpgs nearly missed I would chose
1. Valkyria Chronicles 3
2. Tales of Destiny DC
Mother 3 was awsome though.
Terry Crewes!? Hah, the man could fund it himself. 😅
This game never came out in America
Wait did we?? I'm so out of it rn.
Ok, they cannot use the magypsies as an excuse because they rereleased miitopia and still kept the gay relationships
Awesome
