Sometimes the West misses out on some really great games, they just don’t get to see the light of day officially for some reason or another. But some series have a dedicated enough fan-base that they’ll actually do the work to translate or localize a game by themselves! “If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself” after all. Words of wisdom that the folks at Geofront have taken to heart when they worked on their own fan localization, without which this review would not have been possible. I am SuperDerek, and this is Trails from Zero!

@@SuperDerek Not only is Azure outstanding by itself, but it gives an incredible amount of context to the Cold Steel arc. I think it occurs at the same time as CS2.
@@rriggs6547 Azure takes place between/during the first 2 cold steel games.
It starts during CS1 and ends during CS2.
You guys did a great job on it. Made my top 5 games of 2020!
@@Naticus105 i am so glad i randomly stumbled onto this reviewseries exactly NOW because with Azure on the close horizon i also absolutely cannot wait to watch derek play it because in my opinion - even with the old Flame translation, Azure is EASILY in my top5 videogames of all time and fav trails game and the geofront is just gonna make this leaps and bounds better and i absolutely cannot wait to replay it myself aswell finally.
Azure is just around the corner! I'm waiting till the patch and then just gonna blitz them both out back to back.
If Falcom and NISA ever release an official localization, I’ll of course buy it to support them, but the Geofront version will forever be the official localization in my heart. It’s my favorite of the first 4 Trails games and I can’t wait for Azure.

Truer words have never been spoken. While I would be thrilled to see a official release for the crossbell games Im starting to doubt that there is any publisher that would pour in the same amount of time, love an atention to detail the geofront did in this release.
They are truly doing Aidio's work.
I rather Falcom Games release Hajimari no Kiseki next over already fan translated games
I actually would prefer they NOT officially localize these games since the fan patch is no worse and id rather localization companies make the cash they deserve on modern releases than old games that would likely earn them less sales and possibly make them question further development in the series
True, just finished both Crossbell arc with the translation patch and already missed the cast before moving on to Erebonia arc. If by chance it officially released, I will buy it. Yes the game is that good.
Even the old translation was fine. That's what I played, and I don't feel a need to play the geofront version. Some lines were a bit awkward, but it was very rare that I didn't understand what they were saying. But I'll look into Geofront eventually when I have the time, whether I replay it or watch a LP.

About 5 hours in myself! Loving the characters and story so far, a really good fresh feel from the sky series. The geofront translation is unreal, like you said I think this is beyond what we would get from an official release. Us fans are truly fortunate!

Just bought it. I actually already watched a playthrough after beating sky and before starting cold steel. But its on sale and and this video encouraged me to finally take the leap to figure out how to do it.

I've finished Trails from Zero about 3 months ago. Out of all the Trails games I played and finished ( including the Sky series and the first 2 cold steel games). It's by far my favourite game in the series. As for the Geofront localisation, it was masterfully done in my opinion. There were times were I forgot I'm playing a fan localisation of a Japanese game. I enjoyed watching the review btw and I can't wait Geofront to release the Azure localisation since my copies of Cold Steel 3&4 are collecting dust pretty much lol.
I feel this so much. I've told myself I can't play CS3 until after Azure. I literally just finished Zero a few hours ago and now I just need Azure to drop so I can play CS3 which has been sitting in my steam library for just over a year now and I'm going to be picking up CS4 when it drops on steam later this month.

I started it on Switch last night. Super excited to play it in english finally.
I’ve never been so immersed and connected to a games setting than I was in crossbell. I knew the citizens and their little side stories that weren’t even part of quests. I felt like I was apart of the city. I think the smaller scale helped compared to sky where it felt hard to be fully connected to liberl with its larger size.

Offical Release for Fall 2022 for Zero and 2023 for Azure. They will you THIS FAN TRANSLATION as the base for the official translation. Also patch no longer available to support the official release

I actually was researching Trails of Cold Steel part 1, because it's on discount on the Playstation store and came across your channel. watching your reviews made me to rethink my purchase of Cold Steel 1 and start with Trails from Zero instead - because it's the first Trails game that I'm gonna play.
I feel like these games would be perfect on the Switch, which is the biggest reason I'm still holding out hope for an offical localization
And my kind sir, this game is coming this month. I'm super excited. That's why I'm watching this review because I've been wanting to get into the series forever but it's so many games you have to play first

@@sharebear421 I played the PSP version initially, translation is very subpar at best, it’s playable from beginning to end but it’s not good. It definitely doesn’t do this fantastic game the justice it deserved
@@ForgoMem sadly it’s the only way I have to play. Idk why geofront didn’t release a psp/vita version. Luckily the second game I hear has a lot better translation for the handhelds
If I had to guess why they didn't do it for the PSP/Vita version, it's because that would double or triple the amount of work involved. Aside from the script, (assuming nothing changed between releases) it'd be like starting over from scratch for each platform, and would require completely different areas of expertise to hack those, and of course testing each version would be equally massive undertakings.

Ahhh its so wonderful a big name youtuber is experiencing this amazing series for the first time. Ive been gaming since the 80s and have only changed what I call my favorite series twice ever. This series is my current fave and I doubt Ill ever change that opinion again.

I always liked the music in the trails games. Also I'd like to see the trails of cold steel games remade in this style.
Just to people know the (GOG) version of "The Legend of Heroes Trails from Zero" is out now, in english and it actualy use the "geofront translation" as a colaboration

man, you've got me so excited for the trails series over the last year...I bought the first and second games on steam, but I don't really love playing long involved games on my pc...or I should say, sitting in front of the computer. I need to figure out something to be able to sit on the couch. There's a copy of the first game on PSP at my local store, I'm tempted to buy it because I love playing handheld, but it's pretty expensive...ill figure something out I guess. I need to stop stalling and get on it!
I've been playing on my computer connected to my TV from my couch using an 8Bitdo dual-shock style Bluetooth controller -- it's been awesome! If you have a laptop or something from the last 10 years it ought to run these games just fine. :)

Zero is great. Such a fantastic opening chapter. Really makes you fall in love with Crossbell and care about the people that live there.
That being said, just like others are saying, Azure blows this game away. It’s such an incredible roller coaster ride. Can’t wait to see your take on it.

Trails from Zero is so much Falcom goodness - from the catchy music, the attention to detail in world-building to the sense of humor. They're all here.
Only thing that may ruin Trails games from this era is there is no tension in life-threatening situations if you come in from the Cold Steel games.
You already knew who will survive this part of the continuity.
Not just that. Cold Steel also spoils tf out of the Crossbell arc.
In a nutshell perhaps, you still dont get the full context of it all.
If you played cs3 or cs4 before azure you likely ruined that experience for yourself.
CS3 had no chill just spoiling major plot details and character identities.
Great review! I played Zero and Ao in Japanese a few years ago and I've always considered them to be Trails' peak, and maybe the best JRPGs in existence without a localization. Geofront have done the fandom an incredible service. You're gonna love Azure, it's a masterpiece!

Yeah me too man! I'll still sneak it in once in a while but having a much shorter intro keeps people from clicking away in the first 10 seconds. For what it's worth, the piano song I play at the beginning and end is a super classy cover of the original theme song. :)

I hope NISA or someone will bring the Crossbell games officially in the West since that's how I play these games. I'll wait however long I have to to play it that way, especially so I can enjoy the English cast of the SSS(and others) reprise their roles for their characters main arc. I don't really play fantranslations so if the games never do come out officially, well, I'll just have to miss out. It's not the first time it's happened to me and I didn't die before, so I won't die this time.
I do have a feeling we'll get them though officially in the West. It's more a matter of "when" and not "if". ^_^

Dude, if you've played the Sky series, Zero at least is an absolute must! I hope the ports come westward too, but don't let a 10-minute inconvenience keep you from experiencing this one. :)

@@crispy_asch7110 It honestly isnt nearly as complicated as it seems. The hardest part of the whole thing is actually just obtaining a copy of the game.
@@crispy_asch7110 It's really easy to install, just set where you have the game installed and the translation installer does the rest.

It is absolutely amazing how well this line lines up with the official release now to happen, haha.
I loved zero, and I can't wait for he Geofront version of Azure. The only conundrum I'll have when it drops will be whether I should do a third playthrough of both (I'd like to see the small changes in the Zero 1.1 patch) or just Azure.

By time I watched this, there is indeed an official release of Trails from Zero, using Geofront's Mod as a basis. That to me is amazing. Also Azure has been released in the same vein. I still need to go finish that game.
Dude you are in for a treat with the next one. Trails to Azure and Sky second chapter are easily the 2 best in the entire trails series. Incredible games.
I actually think I liked zero a bit more than Azure. I also like FC more than SC tbough so Im weird. But the most epic scenes in the series come in zero IMO. Like the time lloyd is running away from gangsters with a kid while inevitable struggle plays. Or when a certain girl hides in a wardrobe as she secretly hears a dramatic discussion about her parents. I felt like zero showcased said girl and Tio more than azure which I think many fans think are some of the top cast in the series.

Its honestly insane how much more packed azure is compared to everything else.
Zero is the best arc opener and an amazing game that doesn't feel the need to cliffhanger you.

@@Ghalion666 but there is not a lot of "epic" moment during the dance party, except the climax of this area, but it was so predictable. However the West Zemuria Trade conference is so epic because we see the President of all region of Zemuria (Liberl, Crossbell, Calvard, Erebonia Remiferia). You can see all the politic scheme in this scene. Also there is the attack during the West Zemuria Trade Conference by the Imperial Liberation Front. I will stop here, because I don't want to spoil. 😁

Zero has probably my favorite regular battle theme of the series, "Get Over The Barrier!" is dope.

I'm hoping it'll come to steam. I only have a PC, and switch. I have seen others play it but its more when its you who play it.
The version I played is only on PC, but it's not for sale on Steam. There are links in the video description to where you can buy the game. And once installed, I believe you can easily point Steam to your game folder if you really want to. :)
I also like to point out that a lot of Plot and events in Zero and Azure are also very important in CS1 an CS2 since the timeline of those games intersect in the timeline. Plus I skipped from Zero to CS1 and 2 first since Azure geofront wasn't finished yet which semi spoiled me some events in Azure and I assume it can be mind boggling to most western players since most played CS without knowledge of the crossbell duology story, so some major or minor events that was currently happening will confuse most players like the giant _______ in the distance for example in CS2.
Most of those are minor spoilers so id still say cs1 and 2 are fine to play before azure. Cs3 however doesnt give a fuck and will just spoil all of azure for no reason more than to call back to past games.

Derek! Why are you doing this to me, I've got so many games in my backlog already - now we're adding amazing fan localizations?! After watching, the quality of the game surprised me in so many areas (how cool is the graphical style and the framed perspectives?). Also, the story and setting seem like they make for a really fun premise so I'd love to see how it plays out. How long did this one take to finish?

Im also trying to catch upto the backlog escpecially the trails series in chronological order! Im playing Trails in the sky 2nd chapter 2 hrs in and trying my best to complete all the trails series before my eyes start to give up!

I was thinking of trying this but then what I read was to buy a PC version from some overseas storefront and it just seemed to be more confusing than I would have liked. Maybe if I look at your links that would make it easier, as I was interested in it.
I had been playing Trails of Cold Steel IV but was starting to get burned out from playing so many of them in a row essentially so I took a break.
Anybody know if the voice acting in the official NIS releases is the same amount as the evo mod? Should we still install the mod on the official versions?
Trails zero series (crossbell arc) are coming to switch in asia. The first two of the trails of cold steel series are coming to switch in asia as well. Do you think that we have any chance to be localize to english regions?
There is a chance, but Falcom is a relatively small outfit so they have to pick and choose what comes to the West. I know that the president of Falcom has expressed interest in bringing Crossbell to the West, so there is definitely hope. :)
Geofront's translation/localization is fantastic. Unfortunately, it's so fantastic that it significantly reduces any chance to get an official PC release. Therefore it also reduces a chance for console release as western publishers of JRPGs usually want to make some money on PC release as well.
Derek's comment in the video proves it quite well: "Who cares? Don't bother waiting for official release...".
Yep, the Geofront localization is so good that waiting around is meaningless. This way lets us support Falcom directly, without Falcom having to shell out big bucks for an official localization.

There is no "pure" legal way how to get Evo sound files as these require hacked PSVITA to extract. If one really cares about legality then it's the dead end :-(

I have had Trails in the Sky in my PSP / Steam library for ages. I really love the character development, but am intimidated by the time commitment.

I have heard a rumor to the effect that the Geofront patch has artwork and other files that enable the user to add the game to his/her Steam or GOG library. So...you can't *get* the game on Steam, but if you are a Steam gamer, you can have all your Trails games located in one place.
Its not a rumor. If you add the game to steam through the 'add non steam game to library's option. You can have the game launch through steam, just set the custom artwork for the banners, cover, etc. Using the image files provided by Geofront
This game just got announced for Switch.
