If you weld a line at 18” and 24” would give you a nice depth reference from the machine as you work.

I got a little while oilfield electric line for a submersible pump to power my pump house. I bought a cheap ripper for the tractor. Ripped a shallow ditch to avoid water and buried electric lines . I laid that 2/0 in the ditch, ran a dirt mover to cover it. I can run nearly anything from the pump house now without trying to get huge equipment close to the barn.

Most water lines in the u.s. if its after it enters the termination structure it doesnt need ribbon. And on the east coast maryland Pennsylvania and west Virginia and virgina you dont need ribbon or a tracer wire unless its a city water line

Here in the states or some of the states, we have a locator service that is paid for by all of the utility companies. They come out before you dig or trench and locate all electrical water and underground lines and mark the ground with different colored paint to let you know what line you are getting close to. Plus we have depth regulations on how deep certain utility lines are supposed to be buried.

Trevor (from Queensland, Australia) Hi Lads...you appear a bit worried about running into hard rock or maybe tree roots when laying that pipe. If you havn't already thought in this direction and because you cannot back-up when pipe laying, may I suggest that you do a "dummy" run with the ripper first to clear any obstacles. This may take a bit longer to do the job, but it will make for a clear run when you lay the pipe. Cheers, and keep up the good work.
