MANHATTAN'S CHINATOWN (simplified Chinese: 曼哈顿华埠 or 唐人街; traditional Chinese: 曼哈頓華埠 or 唐人街; pinyin: Mànhādùn huábù / Tángrénjiē; Jyutping: Maan6haa1deon6 waa4fau6 or tong4jan4gaai1) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, bordering the Lower East Side to its east, Little Italy to its north, Civic Center to its south, and Tribeca to its west. With an estimated population of 90,000 to 100,000 people, Chinatown is home to the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. Manhattan's Chinatown is also one of the oldest Chinese ethnic enclaves. The Manhattan Chinatown is one of nine Chinatown neighborhoods in New York City, as well as one of twelve in the New York metropolitan area, which contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, comprising an estimated 893,697 uniracial individuals as of 2017.
Chinatown is also a densely populated neighborhood, with over 141,000 residents living in its vicinity encompassing 1.7 square miles.

I have been away from NY for almost 20 years.
I trained in physical skills there in the 1970s.
It looks like a theme park compared to how I remember it.
Thanks to this I no longer feel the need to return.
    Thanks.

One of your best videos! Loved how cramped it was, walking so close to everyone, the signs, the different businesses - the whole shebang!

This was another one of your great videos, but it did open my eyes to a few things. I'm pretty familiar with this neighborhood-- the Hotel Mulberry is a good place to stay when visiting the city. Perhaps because you walked this on a Sunday, far more of the crowds on the street were clearly tourists rather than locals... more than I've ever seen before. I fear it's only a matter of time before Manhattan Chinatown becomes just like Little Italy-- for the tourists. Chinatown Queens has become a much more important Asian neighborhood in just the past decade. Only after you crossed the Bowery into the eastern portion of the neighborhood did the tourists disappear. The merchants on the street-- grocers, household supplies etc-- reflected that. I do wish you would have spent more time over there rather than circling the neighborhood around Mott St. Still, highly entertaining and worth every minute of watching. Thank you again for what you do.

I hear as older Chinese restaurants closes down in Manhattan Chinatown, other more yuppie places like bars and grills opens up or other ethnic restaurants such as Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, Japanese sushi etc reopens. Also hear that as older generation Chinese families moves out, White kids moves in and probably pay 3-4 times more rent, not being racists here. Manhattan Chinatown is now full of old Chinese people; you hardly notice many youngsters anymore. The younger generations rather move to the suburb like Jersey or other parts of the city like Flushing Queens, Sunset Park, Bensonhurst, Ave U, Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn as rent becomes unaffordable in that area. Manhattan Chinatown is slowly being gentrified. In another decade or so, it's going to be just another part of lower east side, no long Chinatown like we knew it from the 1960's-2000's. Or like you mentioned, it'll be just another destination for tourist as in Little Italy. What a shame that would be.
