Interesting, so this mini split is 12 VDC? I might suggest that when you are parked, make or use a cheap PVC frame to hang up some mylar emergency blankets up around, but not touching the sun facing black exterior of the van. You are facing 10's of thousands of BTU of thermal that the mylar will almost eliminate. You could also use some white bed sheets with a similar result. Of course these are only for stationary use. Glad that you finally have something that you are pleased with!
Yes it is 12v dc! That's great advice on the sheets. I'm going to be installing curtain partitions throughout the van to segment areas off for sleeping, ect. But so far, it has been more than enough to keep the van 78-85 during peak heat. I've been making sure the back of the van is always facing away from the sun and that does seem to help performance.

I have an RV with two roof tops but am thinking of adding this 12V split system that you added instead of adding a 120V that I would need to add to generator. My question is if this 12V system will run off the house batteries that are being charged by the alternator while I’m driving, as my RV only needs the help during driving hours because of the huge windows that let in heat. I won’t need to run the 12V split system when parked
Yeah I don't see an issue with that at all as long as the proper charge controller is inline for charging your batteries from the alternator. The S1 comes with battery terminal rings and in line fuses and is designed to go right in line with any 12v system. You might have to build your own harness like I did though depending on how long of a run the s1 is to your battery bank. Depending on the size of your battery bank, I would just be cautious you don't drain them. But if you are only using it driving, it should be more than ok! I know Jonathan from Nomadic installed this in their Expedition Rig to use to cook the cab while driving. I use mine while driving all the time too.
No, it has to be mounted vertical. I asked the same question when dong my initial research. I thought about mounting it on my roof at an angle, and Nomadic said it could technically be done, but a lot of modifications would have to be made since it relies on gravity. The cruise in comfort system does have an undercarriage mounted system, and Velit AC also has a similar system. Cruise in comfort system is pretty expensive, but I've heard great things about it. I was worried about dust and grime causing issues which is why I went with this system.
@@rileyclarkfineart I wonder if you could do an undercarriage with the S1 but pop the shroud off and flip the compressor around so its not upside down.
Thank you for posting this. Question for you, what about the mounting options with regards to the door, especially as it relates to opening and closing the door and movement of the hoses and cables. Does the evaporator unit have to be mounted to the inside of the door? This is one of my conceptual concerns for these types of systems. Did you consider the cruise and comfort with mounting the condenser underneath the vehicle?
Great questions! As for the hoses n such, everything is mounted onto the same door, so those open and close together so no issues there. I was able to create a way to have slack for the power when door is closed and then it stretches out when the door opens. The Way I have it fed seems to open and close with no issues. This could definitely be done better, but since my van was already built out, I was a touch limited. Still happy with the result! I did look at the cruise n comforts and they are solid. Having it undermounted with the amount of offroad travel I do made me worried. I know that they have protections in place, but still with dust and debris, it was a concern for me. The S1 is also almost half the price of the cruise in comforts. It is nice that the cruise n comforts parts are seperate so you can easily move things around and configure them to optimize where the cold air comes in and maximize the space of the build. But again, my van was built out already so this perk wasn't something I could take advantage of.

You are correct, it does not come charged. However, it was really easy to have it charged. It takes the same freon that standard cars take and filling it is the same process. Just make sure you have it installed and running before because they will need it to be put to max cool with the temperature set as low as possible to fill the unit. I have 600amp hours of lithium batteries with 600w of solar charging and 100 amps of alternator charging. I drive the van a lot when I am in it and don't find myself sitting boondocked for long so this set up has been awesome. So far I have kept the van comfortable during the peak times of the day so I am very happy with this unit!
Kind of a loaded question because there are a lot of factors that can help and effect the performance. On max cool mode it will run at around 60amps and in eco mode it will run around 30 amps. This draw will more than likely be constant during the peak heat of the day. During the cooler times, the unit will cycle on and off which helps save power. I made a follow up video to this one showcasing how I personally used it when it was 115 outside and cooled off to around 90 at night. I ran it on eco, kept it 76 degrees over my bed area, and only used around 25% of my bank which equates to around 150 amp hours. I also had starlink running and equipement charging so that number is skewed.

Just AC unit right now. Not sure if Nomadic has plans to expand to heating, but that would be pretty cool if they did with a future generation.
