There are some non normal situations that requiere to leave the landing gear extended for some minutes after takeoff. On a 787 we had a tiny panel missing from the landing gear area on one occasion. Boeing said we had to leave the gear extended for ten! minutes because certification standards for a wheel well fire detection were not assured due to disturbed airflow around the wheel well.
