Actually King Phillips ship (HMS Sovereign of the Seas) is weaker then a normal 1st rate. It has, fully upgraded, 200 men less and is a bit more maneuverable. But the slightly better mobility isnt enough to compare the missing crew. But it looks nice in the end
Maybe the reason the ship isn't firing back is because your probably too close to it and yes I been playing this since 2020 and in my experience with it AI ships after you end boarding will run way (if civilian class) or get a few distance away from you to fire again (if military class)

Capture one of the tax ships. Do it with a fully upgraded corvette or one that has both bigger cabins upgrades, all the boarding upgrades and a full crew.
Me: just sail into the ship and slaughter them that's the easiest way you got like 800 men on that ship Also me the next day: making my way to meet this guy
I can duel any strongest ship using weakest ship 😂 by spamming barrel😂 I can destroy even a fleet . I used to play this since 2018 . But there's nothing update so I stop. Multiplayer is suck.

I remember fighting this for the first time with my 4 1st rate ships. It almost shreds one of my ship to pieces.

It's the Ai, sometimes it tries to make a break for if, especially when your fleet is stronger, I've seen 2 first rates run away on my test account
What makes me feels wired is that this ship had no any escorts with it😅

The Duke of Kent is a slow ship, almost any ship can outrun it due to its poor speed and mobility
