3:08 The joke is that all 3 original Star Wars movies begin with a star destroyer passing the screen. George Lucas loved this. He even gave Mel access to his special effects company ILM. The only conditions were that Mel Brooks not could sell any merch as people could mix up the Star Wars merch with the Spaceballs merch, hence all the merch jokes in the movie and he couldn't dress Lone Starr as Han Solo, so he dressed him as Indiana Jones instead.
3:08 -- This is just a theory, I think this might have also been a jab at/reference to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. That had a very lengthy segment when the Enterprise is first revealed, when Kirk and Scotty are approaching the dry dock. Even counting conservatively, that segment is almost four minutes start to finish with no dialogue; and though there is maybe a minute or two in there of shots of Kirk and Scotty looking at each other in the shuttle, of the exterior of the shuttle, etc., there's still probably more time spent just on glamour shots of the Enterprise than Spaceballs starts on that opening bit (a little under two minutes). That movie is cut very slowly, and there are even more sequences from it that fit the bill. As just one more, the not-quite-four-minute leaving drydock segment contains a total of almost two more minutes of exterior glamor shots of the Enterprise. (I don't mean "cut slowly" as criticism really, just description.) If you'd like to see what I mean, both of these scenes I mention are findable on TH-cam -- look for "Enterprise flyby" and "Leaving Drydock".
It's a very funny movie by Mel Brooks, it is a spoof of Star Wars and other sci-fi movies like Aliens, etc. Just enjoy it, we all did. Mel Brooks is the president and Yogurt. John Candy and Joan Rivers are in it too, Candy is Barf and Joan is the voice of the female robot.
15:59 It's a play with the word Jewish. Mel Brooks is Jewish himself and just have to put some kind of Jewish puns in his movies. Same in both Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood men in tights, that is a spoof of Kevin Costners Robin Hood Prince of thieves.
"Spaceballs": Mel Brooks takes down the Space Opera in grand style.;) Did you notice that the "President Skroob Salute" is a rude gesture? 6:29 Comedian Joan Rivers was the voice actor for "Dot Matrix" and ad-libbed her lines. 7:35 is a riff on "Prince Valiant," who is a drowsy user of Valium Did you notice that "Lone Starr" looks like "Indiana Jones"?
rick moranis plays dark helmet in this . He was also in ghostbusters movies, little shop of horrors, the flintstones and i think in Honey i shrunk the kids were some of his movies. The jamming the radar is literal a jar of jam.
Mell Brooks smashes the fourth wall in his films, and yes most are parodies. In addition to Star Wars, several scifi puns are worked in as you caught Alien, there is Star Trek, Planet of the Apes and even his own films are placed in the movie. He also tends to play at least one part in his films, in this case the President and Yogurt. If you want a laugh you can't go wrong with Brooks films. One of my favorites not covered much is "To be or Not to be" with his real life wife. A movie they can almost play themselves in a historical context. I think it gets ignored for the WWII context that FYI Mell served in the army in WWII in an engineering unit and one of his favorite things to do is make fun of the period Germans. Also that film is a remake of one done just after the war that bombed because it was too soon but also quite good. One of the few times Mell really follows an old script too when most are full parody of one.
Great Reaction....... (Standard Comments, So some Might have already been mentioned)...... George Lucas and Mel Brooks are Great Firends..... When Mel Told George about his movie idea, George gave Mel full access to ILM for the special Effects, The only Condiditions were "No Merchandise" (No Competition for Star Wars) and the lead could not look like Han Solo (So Mel Dressed him as Indiana Jones)..... Dot Matrix was an early type of printer for home computers, She is voiced by comedian Joan Rivers..... Vespa is a classic european Scooter, Prince Valium, Valium is a drug that makes ya sleepy, he is styled after the old Comic Strip "Prince Valiant" set in medevil times.... The Radar Guy is Michael Winslow who is best known as Larvell Jones from the Police Academy Movies.... and Yes, He makes all those sounds...... "Let's take a 5 minute break, Smoke 'em if ya got em"....... The spaceballs do not appear on screen for 5 minutes........ Mel Brooks like to play multiple roles in his movies... Dark Helmet playing with the dolls was totally unscripted.... They just gave Rick the dolls and let him Improv/FreeStyle........ "May the Swartz be with you" was the slogan of Mel Brooks' Lawyer who was named Schwartz...... John Hurt actually reprized his role for the Aien diner scene.... Planet of the Apes, Mel Brooks Movie..... What is this Fourth Wall you speak of??
Fun movie and great reaction! 😀 The Alien part is cause Spaceballs makes fun of alot of sci-fi movies (Alien, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Transformers and more)
The merchandising joke is because George Lucas didn't want Mel Brooks to make a toys similar to Star Wars. I suggest watching more Mel Brooks movies . His previous directed movies can be seen in Mr. Rental.

@@EvanED Sure, maybe but it was Star Wars that canonized the long shot of the passing spaceship into sci-fi dogma.
It's referencing the mining vessel from Alien. It has drawn out ship pass with out 'music' or anything else in the scene.

Plaid is the Scottish checkered fabric, like the checkered pattern from Spaceball 1.
Daphne Zuniga was in a soap opera like show called Melrose Place. Before that, she had this role.
Mel Brooks doesn't just break the fourth wall, he kicks it down and smashes it into dust.
What a fun charming reaction! Love this classic.
thank you!

40:21 "Why would it be Paris?" It sounds like a Parisian ambulance siren which has been mocked in a few shows.
