  • Second video in my Learning To Fish series. I hit the lake in my Old Town Sportsman to try some "new to me" bass fishing techniques. I'm seeking help from experienced bass anglers to help me learn how to fish. Hopefully you'll help! ‪@OldTownCanoeKayak‬ ‪@monzsterman‬ ‪@jasonm1884‬ ‪@oldeschoolbob1022‬

    Wacky worm drop shot is best used on spinning gear also try 15lb florocarbon on spinning reels you have more control over your wacky/ drop shop rigs

      @scottmassey1639 thank you for watching and for the tip. I have no clue about braided line or fluorocarbon for that matter. I'll check it out! Thanks for subscribing too!

    Let all soft plastics drop to the bottom before hopping popping and reeling them in

    In 60+ degree water, the fluke should produce, looks like you may be fishing a bit slow, (at least for me). Tidal waters are a bit different, but like any moving water, I would fish with the current flowing towards me, throw up current and bring the bait back to you. Swim baits should work well in that temp of water as well. I would throw some fast moving baits and find them first, then you can slow down and use a swim bait, plastic worm, or even a jig and craw and really work the area over once you find them. Don't give up, keep "plugging away" pun intended! Just have fun and it will start coming together.

      @themajik1 I felt like I was working the fluke slower than I saw people on TH-cam, but if I tried to work it faster it would come up out of the water. I usually do try to fish with the current but that's only one way. I'm so far south that there aren't really any true lakes, they are mostly large coves off the delta river system and the water is usually brackish. Thanks for the words of encouragement and offering up advice. I really want to learn more and at least have some respectable finishes when tournament season starts.

      @@yakkittymack flukes will rise to the surface if they aren't rigged a certain way. There are videos on YT about specific rigging for flukes. Search it up. I usually let my fluke sink for a count of 5, then start my retrieve and if it starts rising, let it sink back down. So I am guessing you are in the Alabama coastal area? I'll have to look and see what the main forage base is in that area. Are there no bass fisherman around that you can talk to and see what they know? Bass are usually triggered by the same baits, but it's best to know at least the average size of the forage so you can as they say, "Match the hatch".

      @@themajik1 yes, coastal Alabama. I've only lived here for 9 years and just got back into fishing a couple of years ago. Most of the people I know here fish for trout, reds, and flounder. I am joining a kayak bass club next year and can probably learn a lot from those guys as the season progresses. But I have a very competitive spirit and a desire to start the season (February) as strong as possible. I'm originally from Indiana and I fished with a friend for about 3 years there but just top water and cranks. Indiana was a lot of reservoirs, I'm finding this terrain much more challenging. I was thinking of adding a tiny split shot to my fluke, sounds like I need to let it sink longer. Maybe the salt content slows down the fall? Thanks for your help! Much appreciated!! 👍

    Good quality but no kayak shots? 😢

      @wh1ppet1982 thank you for the kind words. I didn't think about getting any of the kayak in the shots... going out again tomorrow, so I'll be sure to make that happen. Thanks for watching!

    Winter fishing is tough! What kind of water temperature are you dealing with? I've been slowing down my retrieve because the fish are so slow right now but honestly my luck has been pretty bad too. And then there was that day about a week ago when I got out to the pond, hauled out my rods and equipment, and it was totally covered with ice. At least you don't have that problem!
    It took me a long time to realize that most youtubers never show all the videos where they get skunked. I think it's an ego thing. But I've heard a few admit that getting skunked is a lot more common than you would think. Things will probably pick up a lot more by the time your tournaments start so don't worry about it too much. Being out on the water is rewarding enough even if you don't catch anything.
    The thing that stands out to me from this video is it looks like you only cast toward the shore. Whenever I'm on the water I usually cast toward shore but I always shoot a few out in the opposite direction too. I've caught some beauties doing that including a 2 pounder that fought like a 5 pounder. He was an ornery bastard and I hooked him in 10-12 feet of water. I also do a lot of fishing now where I'm way out deep. I've only caught a few small bass doing that but I've caught lots of other species including pickerel and that was unexpected. It seems like as the water cools the pickerel go out deep around here so maybe that's where the bass are too? I guess the thing I'm trying to say is it's a good idea to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. But keep in mind that winter fishing is tough! The fish slow down their metabolisms. They are moving and eating much less. Good luck and don't feel discouraged about getting skunked. It happens to everyone (even if they won't admit it). Try new things, expand your horizons, and enjoy this wonderful time of the year when you have the water all to yourself!

      @jasonm1884 thank you for the encouragement. It's good to hear. I waited a little long in the season to start experimenting I guess? Water temps are hovering around 67 degrees at the moment. Oh hell no...ice isn't anything I'm gonna have to deal with thankfully. The hardest part of the next 3 months is going to be forcing myself to get out on the water when the air temps are in the 40s. I hate winter! I'll probably use the Bass Raider more this time of year so I can bundle up without feeling cramped in the kayak.
      You are correct, I pretty much only throw at the bank. Mostly because that's something I can see. I turned the mapping feature on my Deeper as suggested, but I'm not sure what I'm seeing. You can actually see the map part in the video, so I'm gonna keep using it until I know what it means. I'm guessing you just throw a Texas rig out to deeper water and see what happens? I've been reading up on Carolina rigs, but not ready to try it yet.
      I've got the kayak prepped to go in the morning, it's supposed to be 70 tomorrow and I'm gonna give it another go. Hoping to get that skunk smell off the yak 😂
      Thanks again for your support! It's good to know people are rooting for me and willing to help.

    How thick is your floating rod protector

    • @yakkittymack
      @yakkittymack  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @tonyb-50 I'm not sure. They come in a three pack from Walmart and to be honest, I'm not sure what size they are. They don't interfere with my casting, and I've actually never tested them to see if they will keep the rod afloat 😂

    You say the water is up and you thought it may be because of rain or tide. I am going to assume your fishing a tidal river?

    • @yakkittymack
      @yakkittymack  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @monzsterman yes. I'm so far south, about 35 to 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico most all of our "lakes" are actually large coves where creeks meet rivers. For the most part I am fishing offshoots of the Tenesaw River. Does that make a difference?

    • @monzsterman
      @monzsterman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @yakkittymack I personally find tidal rivers hard to fish for bass. Im in VA and most people seem to fish for Catfish. That's not to say it can't be done but it seems there are so many different opinions on how to fish tides. With the temps you gave to another commenter, I would think you should still be catching fish. There again on a tidal river usually come up empty handed also. I started keeping a diary this year but unfortunately didn't get out much. I use my phone to keep track of time, tide in or out, when I catch a fish, where and what bait. Don't Know if it's gona help but I'm not giving up.

      @monzsterman I really think the bass move or change behavior in some ways from middle of summer on. Early spring and early summer I do pretty well on the same bodies of water throwing at cover...then it just shuts off. That's why I'm trying to learn other techniques because I believe they are there, just can't seem to find them. I think what you are doing is a good idea. Once you've got some data you may be able to see patterns develop. I'm going out in the morning again to a large "creek" that meets up with the Mobile Bay (Bay Minette Basin) and hopefully I can do better. A lot of the water I'm fishing is brackish. Not sure if that makes a difference? 🤔
