I just love the shit out of this track. The minor/major shifts keep the melody unpredictable. And that one 5 note group adds this unexpected little lift in the song's otherwise steady groove. That and the instrumentation is just killer. The Genesis's FM chip always sounds so bright and poppy.
I think what I love most about Sonic 2's soundtrack is its pure variety. From jazzy Casino Night Zone, funky Mystic Cave Zone, and a Latin sounding Aquatic Ruin Zone, the game covers a lot of ground. This is definitely one of my favorite songs in the game. Really fun to play on sax, too.
Then there's the military Wing Fortress and the chill, easy-going Sky Chase along with the dissonant Death Egg and the groovy Metropolis and happy Emerald Hill, the slow Hill Top and electronic Chemical Plant. Then there's the solemn Hidden Palace theme and the emotional ending song. Masato Nakumara is talented.
This zone is just great. I love how if your able to stick to the top pathway your able to avoid the water, yet if you slip up (or just like being underwater) Your treated to a fun, and not too hard water section :)
This has got to be my all time favorite Sonic Zone ever. The music is just so good. I didn't even care that it was one of the cursed "water levels". It still had a fast pace (even thought the levels went by WAY too fast). Anyway, back when me and my cousins would always play this game at our grandmothers house, we couldn't get past chemical plant Act 2. One day, while they were off playing, I snuck in and beat the act. Ever since then, I've associated this song with victory and pure fun.

***** I'm in the same boat as you and Aurora. Back in the early 90s I had an NES and playing this over my friend's house on his Genesis blew me away. It was absolutely gigantic at the time. There really was nothing quite as hype as Sonic back then. It's nice to see that this game as well as others manage to cross generations and stand the test of time, though. It might not be Sonic, but I remember when I gave my much younger cousins my old PS1 with a bunch of games, including Mega Man Legends, and being really happy when I found out they bought not just the second game but the Megaman X collection for the Gamecube. They had played all the way up to Colonel in X4 by the time I found out. I helped them get past him and the General and got called a "ninja" due to playing Zero really well. ^_^ Bad voice acting aside, these old games age very well. Some things just never get old.
Yup the Sonic Mega Collection was my first ever game! I got it along with a GameCube for my 7th birthday and I still have it and love it! Aquatic Ruin Zone has always been my favorite
This is only edged into second place by Emerald Hill Zone (That bass) This is a masterpiece, however. The melody, bass, almost unfathomable beat. Perfect.
maybe hydrocity? my man hydrocity is the best water level ive played in a 2d platformer ngl, musics a bop, you literally run along the water, and all the corkscrews and pipes you go through make it feel actually fluid
@@kirbogames9664 Maybe I'm just bad but I always found Hydrocity way harder than it should be. To this day I still have no idea how to beat the Act One boss; I just kinda throw myself at it, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But yeah, the music _is_ a bop. Same deal with most classic Sonic levels, to be fair.
I remember playing Sonic 2 way back in the days at a family's house and again at my house and I somehow forgot this zone even existed because I've thought after Chemical Plant Zone was Casino Night Zone and on and on and so forth. It was years later I've found out about this zone and I played it. Despite it having a Latino vibe to it, it reminded me of Xena The Warrior Princess. Maybe it's because it's Greek ruins, I dunno...

I transcribed this tune to nanoloop on the Android (by ear...it took me days) and then the phone got stolen! I noticed that all the parts of the tune are very well constructed! Quite a work of craftsmanship considering the limits of the genesis sound chip.
As Aquatic Ruin/Neo Green Hill aren't on any of the concept arts, that means this level wasn't planned until some point between the development of the Nick Arcade and Simon Wai prototypes, which means it's likely that the music for this level was originally made for a different level.
I don't quite remember there being a Corndog Crisis Zone. But I hope you've found your way through it in the time since you posted this. My thoughts are with you... for, like, the next thirty seconds or so. ♥
This is the greatest song in the history of sonic because it makes the person listening to it wanna run around at the speed of sound and gets them rallied up for the eventual sequel to sonic the hedgehog movie
Nostalgia :( I was in middle school when I played this. I remember 1 time I ditched, played this all morning and like an athlete crossing the finish line I was beat but I passed the game and held my head up high. I was so proud that day lol Oh good ol memories.... Thank you for sharing :)
I once found a guitar pro file of this music, and put it as a .midi on to my nokia phone like 6 years ago, using its inbuilt midi sequence (before mp3 ringtones were available), this song sounded AMAZING.

Lol, speaking of unpredictable melody, chemical plant zone is even more unpredictable and the melody is longer and shifts a lot more
The Genesis sound chip is the most underrated in all of video game history. It is the best no contest.

I agree. The music in this game is just something else. I think Sonic brings you into the game and the music keeps you glued to it.
Has anyone else ever got stuck between 2 falling pillars underwater when playing Act 2 as Knuckles?
That would only happen due to knuckles having a shitty jump, which isn't something they should have kept when using him in Sonic 2.
