As a Black man who grew up listening to Malcom X....when I heard this in the final boss I was shook.....Sonic Rush has one of the greatest ost in Gaming history
Trivia about the "too black, too strong" sample: Hideki Naganuma has stated he intended it to be about coffee. The original source actually came from a Malcolm X speech, which was talking about Black people... using coffee as an analogy. The full line is "It's just like when you have some coffee thats too black, so its too strong. What do you do? You integrate it with cream". (Refering to how the whites were messing with their rights to make blacks weaker)
I always loved the use of the words "too strong" in this song. It feels like the game itself is telling you that the boss is too strong, but you don't care, because you got Sonic and Blaze on your side.
But it's also cause earlier before the boss fight itself, we saw both Eggman's taking the soul emeralds energy to power up the Egg Salamander, the "too strong" part is making reference that this isn't your regular Mech, given it has the powers of the Soul emeralds it stole, it's capable of actually harming the super forms and making them loose rings, hence something that is "too strong" against the super forms.
@@nemi9217 No, the game's composer, Hideki Naganuma sampled popular music and sounds from the times into a funky style. It's digitized and no one's singing. It's just the illusion of singing
I would like to add that the violin / fiddle sample that can be heard (at 1:17 as an example) during the song can also be heard in the soundtrack of the Sega Saturn game "Grandia", in the track "Snow Town Raynu" by Noriyuki Iwadare. Probably, the sample is from a pack that both musicians appreciated.
Thanks for linking my video! Pretty sure the OP's comment inspired me but I forgot to post the link in the replies here. Now the regular song doesn't sound right to me though :(
The more you listen to it the more you realize that the vocals aren't the only thing sampled, like 90% of the instruments in the ost are just loops from Hideki's sample collection. I'm pretty sure you can literally hear sample demo clicks in ethno circus.
People already know about the Malcolm X quote, but I only just learned (via WhoSampled) that this also samples the Watts Prophets' "Rappin' Black" (the parts where it sounds like it's saying 'Wrapped in Black' are actually saying 'rappin' black'). Naganuma really did mine quite a bit for this song, didn't he?
I think this song is a metaphor for how neither Sonic or Blaze can defeat the Eggmen alone. They must team up in order to save both of their worlds. This song is also a metaphor for Blaze breaking out of her social shell and accepting her new friends.
@@theextremeanimator4721 My question exactly? It just doesn't fit with the final boss of this Sonic game or ANY Sonic game, for that matter. They should've just used that track for one of the bosses that ISN'T the final boss.

1. Watch “crabs dying” playlist 2. Get to a tv clip of a lobster crushing a crab 3. Background music gets stuck in my ear because I’ve heard it somewhere before 4. Spend half an hour humming angrily before finally remembering Wrapped in Black
Don't mind me, just genuinely love the melody and arrangement to this tune. Barely noticed the vocals when I originally played, so the first time I saw a comment section talk about nothing but very strong coffee, I was a bit confuse to say the least.
The weird thing about this boss fight was that some days I didn't seem to have any rings and I couldn't get any shots to land, and it became a lesson in having by behind handed to me over and over again. And other days, it was almost trivially easy. And no matter how well I did at the rest of the game, I didn't know until I came to this boss what kind of day it was going to be. The penultimate boss was much harder though.
It frustrates me how much they dropped the ball for Sonic in Smash Bros. This is one of the coolest boss themes out there and we couldn't even have Right There Ride On return in Ultimate
Oh god the memories! I love this game's soundtrack and I remember replaying the final boss several times because I had so much fun and the music made it even better! :')

I advise you go listen to that song, pay attention to the drums during the verses, and then come back here.
1. Watch “crabs dying” playlist
2. Get to a tv clip of a lobster crushing a crab
3. Background music gets stuck in my ear because I’ve heard it somewhere before
4. Spend half an hour humming angrily before finally remembering Wrapped in Black
Dude this was the first sonic game I ever played and this was the first song I ever heard from the franchise it’s no wonder I love it
this song while working out is such an heavenly experience.
When you can't find the right chocolate
This was one of my first video games and I cite it as the reason I like drum and bass so much.
Yyyyeeep, I realized rather recently that I owe the sonic series alot insofar as some of my musical tendencies
This is actually the true final boss's theme.
*Sonic and blaze fighting for civil rights 1960 colorized*
Hideki you composed one of my most favorite sonic songs I wish you best of luck on your journey wherever you are.
It frustrates me how much they dropped the ball for Sonic in Smash Bros. This is one of the coolest boss themes out there and we couldn't even have Right There Ride On return in Ultimate
Malcom chuckled to Martin "You mean the chaos emeralds?"
Oh god the memories! I love this game's soundtrack and I remember replaying the final boss several times because I had so much fun and the music made it even better! :')
Blaze it’s closing in on you
I know
Sonic it’s headed right for you
I got it
Man the ds era was goated
I love that sonic rush ost is suddenly getting the recognition it deserves. This song crossed back 2 back in views I think because of the actual meaning behind the track getting more attention
Fun fact: that Malcolm X sample was also used in the infamously bad licensed SNES game, Bebe's Kids
WE GETTING EQUAL RIGHTS WITH THIS BANGER 🗣️🎤🎵🔥🔥⚫
Facts gang 😂💪🏾💯
WORD
Why is everything zoomers say so fucking annoying. Can you people just ever talk fucking normal and not in memes or shitty lingo
Lol
Black power 💪🏿🙆🏿♂️
I still cannot believe this is the victory theme for Sonic at the end of a race in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.
god that violin in the background is euphoric
Out of the years and years of Sonic music full of amazing soundtracks, this might just be my favorite Sonic song
This song is apparently a lot more deep than I thought it was as a kid
Normal people: "Too black; too strong."
Me, an intellectual:...
*"Too A f r i c a n A m e r i c a n; too p h y s i c a l l y o v e r w h e l m i n g"*
I mean
we back in black baybeeeee
@nicoloco9974 *smashes keyboard*
What if they aren't American though?
@@gouki006ishere then I guess just African
awe this actually makes me really proud of childhood me for listening to this song obsessively on my DS. Never knew they sampled Malcolm X!
OMG! I rediscovered this song. As a teen I did not understand it was made by Naganuma. But as an adult, it all makes sense. More Sonic games should have these kind of songs
One of my ears was clogged, so I tried cleaning it and returned to this song to test how it worked. Help a lot with the prozess. Great song.
To this day, I look for this song to check if my headphones are working
