I like the glass hitting the floor at 1:29, when she name drops him. I get the feeling they both initially think she must be an assassin come to kill him for providing weapons to Bill's team. The tension and apprehension in Sonny Chiba's voice are really something.
To add context to this scene: Even if she wasn't an assassin, Hanzo knew his life was still in danger if he refused to grant the wishes of a warrior in making her a sword. In ancient time Japanese warriors were very much revered & feared in Japan itself by everday people. There are even stories of Samurai's chopping off monks heads on the side roads for not moving out of the way or showing the proper respect as they walked by. To refuse a warrior's request for a sword maker would have been certain death.
the glass breaking is in the background. to imply that the other guy is listening inside and he also got so surprised that broke whatever is in his hands
No it was just a sign of surprise. After 30 years they never expected anyone to personally come asking for him especially having ever met the person. He had no idea whether she knew bill or not. At least not after he showed her the swords. Ultimately breaking his sworn oath.
Love the way she just nonchalantly ducks under their arms at 0:38. Hanzo's so pissed at the world in general he doesn't even notice that the girl presenting herself as a naive tourist is just taking all this in like a floor show.
Thank you. The amount of times I've seen this and I never realised she does that because I'm watching them two. You just made this great scene even greater.
He also misses her smile in reaction to what he's saying. Her mirth nearly belied the truth that she could completely understand everything he said in Japanese. Love that little touch... Ironically his assistant did not miss it which is why he clarified that he wasn't bald. I wonder what HE was thinking when he realized that she understood Japanese since he appeared to take her deception in stride...
I like how when she mentions Hanzo's name, he immediately knows that she knew how to speak Japanese. After she pretended to know only a few words. Guess he expected anyone who drops the name Hanzo to be respectful enough to learn a sufficient amount of Japanese.
Funny thing is if you look at Uma's face during the conversation Hanzo had with his employee she was doing her best not to laugh because she understood everything.

Love this scene. They each slowly figure out the other is not what he or she seems at the start. Starts with a sushi maker & lost blonde tourist & ends with two professionals of death. Line by line & one gesture at a time it progresses so elegantly
Hattori Hanzo comes back from retirement and forges a new sword for Beatrix, and Pai Mei shares his secret exploding-heart tecnhnique: the two old masters recognize the good will in her.
lol funny thing is she didn't even use a sword to kill bill. she used the 5 point death strike. the only people that she killed with the sword was the crazy 88 and ren.
In the original script for Kill Bill, she and Bill were supposed to have a big finale sword fight on the beach. (You can hear Bill allude to that at the beginning of the scene, where he says there's a beautiful beach not too far from here that would be perfect for a fight.) Unfortunately, Tarantino was forced to cut the scene because the movie was going long, and so they did the scene in the house instead. I always felt like that final scene between the Bride and Bill was anti-climactic. Two whole movies; scores of dead bodies to get to him; digging herself out of a grave, for Pete's sake; and this is the finale?? It was incredibly anti-climactic, I felt. But then when I read that about what the final scene was SUPPOSED to be, it made sense. And, frankly, I'm disappointed that QT didn't fight more for the scene. But i can't criticize him. He still made a great film.
Regarding the sword being to kill Bill, I don't think that was the case, necessarily. Remember she told Hattori Hanzo, "I have vermin to kill" (vermin, plural). The sword was for her quest for vengeance, in general, to kill those who wronged her, including Bill. How she ended up killing each one is irrelevant. The point was she needed the sword to perform her quest for vengeance. And I don't think she would have been able to do it without the sword.
nrgins just like to point out that she does not use plural, as in japanese there is no plural. if something is plural or not is context based. There is no context here and she only speaks of Bill. 鼠 Nezumi (Rat / Mouse) So its ambiguous.

This is Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba. He's played Hattori Hanzo in ninja shows and movies in Japan when it was a thing. In my opinion, no one played the part as well as he did.
I like how when HH grabs the other guy's finger and pulls it over The Bride's head, she just whips her head around like it's nothing. Her training shows through.
The layers in this scene are epic, especially for uma. She controls the perception of her character from ditzy to deadly very well. We see BM pretending not to understand a language she is fluent in, played by an actor who methodically conquers the dialog with increasing difficulty without actually knowing Japanese. That gradual transition is the very reason she gained his trust. HH knew he was in the presence of good because BM always made sure to show a level of respect higher than the vulnerability she caused him.
HH also knew that there was only one group of people who knew his real name, skills, location, and sent attractive women out. HH was likely wondering if she was there to kill him when she said his real name, and she only said it after his assistant was in the back. So HH was getting himself ready for the fight of his life, his assistant in the back is grabbing a weapon or two, and Beatrix also knows that she needs HH on her side. So the two men are thinking they might die in a few minutes, and BK is hoping she can convince HH to break a solemn oath.
@@toddkes5890 Given the historical consequences of breaking such an oath, I wondered if BM had to stand as second to Hattori Hanzo while he committed Seppuku. This would also mean that her katana would have been blooded prior to going after O-Ren Ishii
She showed him, the upmost respect. But deeply in his heart he knew it was Bill's fault for her revenge, and her request. Honor the man who understood her pain, his sword will always be remembered in time.
for all the acting involved in the making of the two movies, she should have gotten an Oscar for her impecable performance; not many actresses would have agreed to do those fighting scenes
I always thought Uma Thurman should have been nominated Best Actress for Volume 1. She didn't just put on a believable physical performance, but her non-verbal acting was perfection. You could literally tell what The Bride was thinking and feeling at every moment throughout the film with little to no dialogue and that's because Thurman was persuasive start to finish.
Little known fact that Hanzo's assistant is secretly an undercover Space Sheriff. He just wasn't allowed to teach Beatrix how to use a better weapon: LASER BLADE! Yes, Toku fans, that's Kenji Ohba, Battle Kenya, Denzi Blue, and Space Sheriff Gavan himself!
A Masterpiece At its finest When you have two characters dialoguing, the dialogue breads tension, and the tension builds like stoking a flame. Quentin Tarantino sensei , Arigato.
I like that Uma thought to have Bee visibly suppressing amusement at their bickering, even though Uma herself doesn't speak Japanese - apparently she described what she was able to learn as being very hard for her. Anyway, Bee does understand them, so it makes sense that she'd be having to resist laughing at their antics. I love the sound of breaking glass in the background, the "General" knows that name means trouble.
While everyone knows Sonny Chiba but not everyone knows Kenji Ohba, the bald guy who used to or still play as Space Sheriff Gavan in the Tokusatsu Universe Japan.

If you think about, his son is basically Rorona Zoro
I've always respected Sonny Chiba. What a great actor.
Nothing is more DRAMATIC than when a person starts speaking your language. Torrentino is flipping geniuos!!!!
RIP Sonny Chiba
She showed him, the upmost respect. But deeply in his heart he knew it was Bill's fault for her revenge, and her request. Honor the man who understood her pain, his sword will always be remembered in time.
Lol 00:45 Uma trying so hard not to laugh
Probably the Bride herself trying not to laugh.
Snarky, the Cat It's to hint to us that the bride is fluent in Japanese and listening to their whole conversation about getting sake.
Rest in peace Sonny Chiba. 💜
Sonny Chiba absolutely shines in this roll.
There is so much information in this scene, this movie was a masterpiece.
for all the acting involved in the making of the two movies, she should have gotten an Oscar for her impecable performance; not many actresses would have agreed to do those fighting scenes
That opening is the best comedy ever. “I’m not bald I shaved my head”
That look Uma gives after Hanzo drops the glass is amazing.
I love how Japanese people are known to be polite and stoic (bit stereotyped, oc), but when they are angry, they sound so incredibly angry!
2019 and im still watching this scene
A Masterpiece At its finest
When you have two characters dialoguing, the dialogue breads tension, and the tension builds like stoking a flame.
Quentin Tarantino sensei , Arigato.
The sound of the sake bottle dropping in the background when the name is mentioned.
RIP Sonny Chiba :-(
"I'm not bald ok? I shaved my head.
You understand?"
LMAO!
XD
Sonny and the other guy did a great job in this scene! So funny! 😂😂
RIP Sonny Chiba, a legendary Japanese actor indeed. At least Kenji Ohba is still alive
RIP to the Legendary Sonny Chiba. Street Fighter was my top favorite movie by him🙏🏾🇯🇵
Hanzo: "Do not let your vengeance manipulate you. I was once blinded by it, but an old enemy, uh, I mean friend....cooled me down."
I have lost count of all the brilliant moments in the KB movies. This scene is certainly among them.
That switch from English to Japanese when Hanzo finds out what she wants perfectly sets the tone of this scene
Great acting here. You could see the pain in both of their eyes after his name is mentioned.
The bald man arguing about it being the middle of the dat is Kenji Obha, and actor who played various superheroes back in the 70s and 80s, including the franchise that would become Power Rangers (Super Sentai). His most iconic role was Space Sheriff Gavan, whose design would partially inspire Robocop.
Besides his role as Hanzo in Kill Bill, Sonny Chiba was also Golgo 13 in "Golgo 13: Kowloon Assignment" (1977).
I never get tired of this movie! love it!
do you understaaand gets me everytime
I like how they were testing her out while having a hilarious conversation!
Rest in peace, Sonny Chiba!
One of the most powerful characters ever created in movie history!!!!
Always loved the look on his face when she mentions his name. You can see his heart completely drop.
