    The most striking aspect of this scene is Hattori's friend, who in the previous scene played the part of the bumbling even insubordinate assistant. But in this scene his face and posture is that of a life long friend who understands exactly what the forging of this sword means. No argument no back chat, instead he plays his part in the ceremony flawlessly. The contrast between this scene and the sake scene is so striking it is heartrending.

    • @PromotedPawn
      @PromotedPawn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      @@kevindavis5966 That is the role he fills, but also consider that his master took an oath to never practice again, and kept it for 28 years. His loyalty is so strong that he still followed him into being the second of a terrible sushi shop for decades. He doesn’t necessarily want to take over a sword crafting business, he just wants to follow Hattori Hanzo no matter what craft he decides to practice.

      Seriously? Is that how many folds it takes to forge a katana of superior strength?

    • @M0M0117
      @M0M0117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@norbiesison9257 I’m not sure the exact amount of folds they have to do, but they have to do certainly a lot. They do it because Japanese ore has a lot of impurities in it, it’s not the best metal to make blades out of. So Japanese sword smiths perfected the technique of folding the metal several times to strengthen the blade.
      You can google it to get more info if you are interested.
      Edit: apparently a blade is folded anywhere from 8 to 16 times. It’s like folding a piece of paper, every time you fold it you have more layers, a katana that has been folded 10 times has apparently over a 1000 layers.

    • @CorwynGC
      @CorwynGC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@M0M0117 1000 is what is often claimed. But remember that that is the number of layers, not the number of times it is folded (or a month would be a ridiculously short time). Fold one time, gives 2 layers, twice gives 4 layers, 10 times gives 1,000 layers.

    • @toddkes5890
      @toddkes5890 ปีที่แล้ว

      You also have to figure that folding enough layers turns the metal into a homogenous block, rather than the separate layers that hold an edge or dissipate stress as appropriate.
      The other detail is that the folding would work to make the lousy iron available in Japan better. From there you make different types of steel (hard for holding an edge, soft to handle impacts), and put them all together properly. Step 2 requires a few decades of work and study.

      Imagine an alternate universe where Gavan's father Voicer survives and becomes a blacksmith. He and his son also retire from the Space Police to run a small bar, where Gavan has been reduced to an assistant who fetches the sake. Yes, Sonny Chiba played Voicer alongside Kenji Ohba's titular Space Sheriff.

    This movie had its moments, but I consider the plot revolving around the sword one big waste and a headscratcher. So she goes to such lengths to get the best sword possible to kill Bill, who himself, is a master of the sword and has Hattori Hanzo's sword of his own... But then when she is about to enter his house, you can see she has a GUN at the ready. What's more, when they have their last fight, she doesn't have a sword duel with him at all... She uses the SHEATH to block Bill's sword... and loses her sword before she can make one swing. She ends up fighting him hand to hand and winning because of the exploding heart technique... which was a whole different storyline involving a whole different master who taught her that. And you could say "well, she needed the sword to kill Bill's gang, not Bill himself" No, that's a lie as well. She went after Bernita with a KNIFE and her bare hands. Budd was killed by Elle, Bride's sword didn't help her there at all... Elle was killed by another kung-fu move, and even though Bride crossed blades with Elle, she did not use Hattori's sword to do it at all. In fact, Elle used the sword to nearly kill her - if it wasn't there, killing Elle would've been a lot easier. The ONLY member of the viper squad you can argue she even used her sword against AT ALL was Oren. But if you watch their fight closely, you'll notice that she didn't need any special sword for that at all. She can't cut her sword up during the exchange, for some reason. The killing blow is to the head, so any sword would've done the job. Going for the sword was literally pointless. She shows it off against some small flies along the way, and is only able to do it because they forgot to bring guns to defend their mobster boss... but she kills Bill and his squad without once having any advantage out of it.

    This scene is by far the most beautiful of both films. I always enjoyed the juxtaposition of introducing the assistant to us as a lazy soap opera watching bum but then suddenly this scene emerges and he is now obedient, deeply respectful, and somewhat sad. Over the years I've hoped that Quentin might give us 2 final films that tell the final stories of how Nikki takes vengeance on The Bride for killing her mother (new film 1) and how The Bride's grown daughter B.B. in turn seeks vengeance on Nikki (new film 2). But instead of killing Nikki in the final film she shows her mercy. That film would then end with a recreation of this beautiful scene that we now watch - wherein B.B. travels to Okinawa to return her mother's sword to a much-aged Honzo who tells her the same thing she told her mother - that "vengeance is a forest. And like a forest it is possible to become lost." But Honzo ends his soliloquy by telling her that in showing mercy, B.B. emerged from the forest that consumed her mother. The sword is then ceremoniously sheathed by Honzo's assistant. End with the same music and fade to final credits.
