Ricoh GR - Still the O.G. of Street Photography Cameras in 2023?

  • In this video I return to the streets of Indianapolis for my first street photography walk in 2023, using my new-to-me Ricoh GR, the original.
    I wasn't sure what kind of results I was going to get with the Ricoh GR, as I'm used to using the GR III, which is a much more advanced version of the original GR. However, I found I really did not need the bells and whistles that come along with the newer GR III, including the crappy plastic selection wheel on the back of the newer model that went bad on me within a few months of use. There is no plastic wheel on the original Ricoh GR, just a normal, usable selection button that should have been also used on the GR III.
    Snap focus on the Ricoh GR allows you to set a focal length and not worry about focusing on your subject, making it the perfect camera for Street Photography, or just walking around snapping photos.
    I also did not miss the IBIS feature shooting street, as it's basically not effective over 1/250 of a second shutter anyway. I typically shoot street at 1/500 (you can find my other settings in the beginning of the video), so IBIS isn't important for street as it would be for dusk or low-light shooting.
    I went for harsh contrast with this outing, as it was high noon on a very sunny, and unusually warm February afternoon. The sun made for great contrast, but the key is to position yourself in the right place, and wait for people to pass through the space with heavy shadow separating them from the sunlight.
    I shoot all my images in RAW, and process in Lightroom. The effect of blacking out the shadows is accomplished mainly by slamming the BLACK slider in Lightroom all the way to the left, leaving the shadows at midpoint, and typically adding some WHITE slider to the right, requiring a bit of LIGHT to be pulled down to the right as needed. Add some BRUSH of black in some of the dark areas to fit your style and that's all that's required. I typically leave contrast at mid-point, or back off a bit, but usually do not increase contrast (as it makes the white areas too washed out and harsh.)
    I'll be on the streets a lot more in 2023 as I've rejuvenated my enthusiasm with the purchase of the Ricoh GR, after selling my GR III last year, due to the poorly engineered features on the outside of the camera, and the possiblitity of dust getting into the sensor of a $1,000 camera. I don't mind if it happens to my GR I, as I only paid $300, and don't feel I have to handle it with kidgloves to protect it's delicate exterior. Again, shame on Ricoh for 'upgrading/downgrading' the selection wheel.
    You can purchase this camera, or any of the accessories in my description below. Thanks for your support and continued viewing!

    Never get used how generic and lack of life most American cities look like.

    Great video and some great shots in there. I like that you also included shots that didn't turn out so great.

      Thank you very much! I'm no master photographer - we all take bad photos more often than we care to admit lol

    really neat photography, thanks for showing us. your shooting from the hip style is interesting, I tend to compose more but am still surprised by how "invisible" I am with this camera. no-one notices, or cares. I see you shoot raw too. I spent a week shooting jpeg recipes, I think I said on one of your other videos, but I'm not sure I can get along with letting the camera just do its thing. The film sims are nice but I can do a lot better in LR, most of the time.

      Yes I envy those that can get an excellent jpeg straight out of camera, but that's not me. I like cataloging everything in Lightroom and doing consistent edits. To each their own of course! Thanks for taking the time to comment Cal!

    Some really “punchy” colours - did you boost that in Lightroom?

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I always edit in lightroom and often add some vibrance. But the GR I have found does a great job regarding colors.

    Caming from a previous gr3 video, i defenetly like the gr3 more than this one. This ones look to mutch contrast bouth in colour and in b/w for my taste.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all a matter of taste. You can get the look you want out of any of the GR's. I just like the ergonomics of the smaller original APS-C GR than the newer, heavier versions. The contrast in this video was specific for this walk (for the video, to show a variety of ways to use light/contrast) and isn't a personality of the camera itself, but the post-processing.

      i mean if it’s center metering or highlight metering

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I see. It's spot metering. There is no highlight weighted on the GR. I believe it's just spot, multi, and center.

  • @babettesfeast6347
    @babettesfeast6347 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this aperture priority you are using?

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Always manual. If your shutter speed is below 1/400 you’re going to get motion blur, and if aperture drops below f/8-f/9 you lose your depth of field. Go manual, set both your aperture and shutter speed - then if using the GR 1 I put iso at auto and clean up the potential noise in post. With a GR iii or x you can set a max iso range so not as much potential noise.

    Try not to loose too much detail and color and look for more interesting frames and situations.

    • @DozierGraphic

      I don't approach each and every shoot the same, looking for the 'perfect' photo. That would be boring. I experiment with different methods and enjoy the process. My videos show that you don't always get what you want, you're not always getthig those 'interesting frames or situations' in limited-time outings, so you make do and have fun with what you have. Thanks for watching and the comment.

    like that u get out and do it--reccommend u to shoot black and white or color as in consciously decide at the time of taking the pic will improve your photography. Also the edits are overboard. Try relying on cam and light not compu. 99% of "Street photographers" don't get out and go for it---Respect your willingness to take the photo in the moment. Watched pentax 70 vid too and have additonal recommendations but those for now! Happy Shooting!! Respect

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks but you do you and I'll do me and we'll both be happy shooters! The purpose of my videos are to show options to 'generic' shooting. Some like the idea of being purest, some like the editing process as much or more than the shooting. There is no 'correct' way, only opinions. I also shoot in raw and choose with I prefer based on the shot, again, some fish, some hunt and all are doing it for self-satisfaction, not for others. Have fun and keeping shooting to please yourself. Thanks for the comments!
