I was lucky enough to physically attend this session. It was amazing. Not many people know that Dr. Christoffe Jaffrelot was there too. I, along the some other young men had a rather detailed discussion about Pakistan in particular and Indo-Pacific region in general. I asked a question at 1:21:58
A big slap by Dr Atif Mian "can you give me a position?" This guy is a real nationalist who wants to do something for his motherland. I am an Indian and do hear Dr Atif's views on multiple forums and it looks like he has something in him to do good for his motherland. But the elephant in the room has some other plans. For elephants, the focus is not the country for sure!
Great debate. Thanks Dr Mian for so passionately presenting his views and replying so gracefully. People like Dr Mian are a global asset which make us all so proud. Thanks Black Hole for providing this opportunity.
Pakistan biggest problem is the priority of Islam and religion over other things. Religion doesn’t pay your bills or grows your economy. Science, Math, education leads to learning and enlightenment and eventually economic growth and more.
Great to see Atif Mian at this platform. I want to say, actually this is the real us of social media. Keep on doing. Day will come when efforts will start to pay back.
I would request Mr Atif Mian to talk about our population growth. I feel that our fertility rate of 3.3% is our biggest issue. In fact it is the mother of all economic issues we have. India’s fertility rate is 2%. They have restricted their population to 2.5 times since 1972 whereas our population had grown 4 times. This practically means that we have accumulated 80 million extra people to feed and educate. Bangladesh has follwed the Indian model. Mian Atif can throw some professional light on this aspect.
An excellent discourse ! Thank you The Blackhole for bringing it to us . Prof Hoodbhoy , no words can define what you are doing for Pakistan in these trying times .
Thank you Mr.Perez Hoodbouy for your efforts in improving our awareness on issues related to Pakistan .Hearing Mr.Atif Mian ‘s solution ,I think he is not able to speak his mind completely. Before we can make any economic transformation we must first separate the state and government from religious power .Transitioning to a modern democracy involves ensuring that political power is derived from the people through fair and transparent elections .A commitment to a democratic principles includes protecting civil liberties, upholding the rule of law and fostering political pluralism and then strengthening democratic institutions, such as an independent judiciary, free press, and robust civil society for maintaining checks and balances within the system .Then let us focus on Economic transformation Mumtaz
Wow, what a beautiful primer on Economics for the uninitiated! Such people should be cherished. Hope Atif gets an opportunity to do something for his motherland. Best wishes and prayers!
Dr hoodbhoy … you shld do a case study of Amul … which is a farmers owned cooperative … that’s a billion dollar organization competing with global giants like Nestle .. Britannia ..
There is another conversation with Atif Mia on "The Pakistan Experience" podcast and that is a lot better. The host had very well thought out questions in that podcast.
The fate and conditions of Pakistan is because you guys drove away most progressive and business minded people from Pakistan during partition. The people who migrated to Pakistan were jamindars and nawabs who had no idea how to run and manage businesses, they were simply good how to exploit people under their control that’s what they have been doing for the last 76 years. As simple as that. For Pakistan to grow forward, ban mullas, military, short sighted politicians. Keep religion at home, no hatred to non believers, bring back progressive, talented, visionary Pakistanis and let them run your country till the Pakistani public get civilized.
Excellent lecture & discussion. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed has emphasised that one of the chief causes for partition was that the landed gentry of Punjab, were against land reforms (as said by Nehru in his 1936 speech), socialism which then under the garb of religion became the cause for partition. This now remains one of the chief resistance for changes such as taxation. The problem started then and continued.
In Korea the foundation of development was based on the land reform and consequently prosperity in rural areas which lead to expansion of service industry and high literacy rate.
Dr Sahib Allah bless you with good and healthy life same to Hoodbhai who is doing a brilliant job for Pakistan. I wish if our so called leaders (lootaray) have vision like you guys.
Prof. Hoodbhoy asked what should be done first second or third. The answer for the first is very obvious and Mr. Hoodbhoy has been eluding this in indirect way for years. FIRST thing to do is to send ALL the mullahs of the country to the 72 Hoors that they tell every citizen of Pakistan as their ultimate goal in life.
33:05 👍Economic policy in India just aimed inflated prices of crude oil , land and gold. Only few people were benefitted. Policy shouldn't be micro economic.
Greetings from New Delhi....Atif is extremely competent and his ideas are crystal clear....however its a pity that nothing will ever work for Pakistan till the country exists from radicalism and religious fanatism. Until this happens I doubt if any University Professor from the West would like to be posted in Pakistan.
Atif is a smart person. He clearly is talking about things from a place where these things works which is US. Now coming to Pakistan, one has to not reinvent the wheel, but learn from other countries what has worked and what hasn’t and why. Then adapt those working policies to Pakistan. Who in Pakistan is going to do all of this? Many of these feed into what people call nation building. Building of institutions, processes, bureaucracy and legal systems to deliver on those macro ideas and concepts. This take huge effort and many retries. Sadly, these things take atleast 2 generations for a country that started fresh. Since Pakistan has had 4 generations born since it’s creation, and a country that has systems in place that don’t work, getting Pakistan on the right track personally looks like an impossible feat with the leaders it has. If Pakistan had what India has, then atleast we know the people at the top care about these things and want to fix things and make change. Who is Pakistan’s Modi? Pakistan’s future is bleak. It won’t survive another generation is my assessment.
Thanks a lot, Atif, for making us wiser. However I was very disappointed to note the low level of intellect in the participants and their ability to ask the kind of questions this thought provoking conversation by Atif had created. Pervaiz may like to share the criteria for invitations to such sessions
@1:01:10 Seriously why can't Prof Atif Mian be the Economic Advisor of Pak PM and FM for a few years? His mastery over economics is not being utilized by Pak govts. All junk is brought to those key posts and ruining the economy.
Problem with Pakistan is that intellectuals like these two are in the periphery. Decision making is in the hands of the Army, ISI and their appointed political elite. So, whatever you discuss in a room becomes irrelevant in Pakistan. Add to this the huge level of illiteracy, fundamentalism, hatred of India and Hindus and you know why this nation cannot ever rationally decide to bury the hatchet and trade with India even if that is the rational think to do and that is the thing that will save Pakistan's economy.
Pakistani army-politicians-jamindaar-elite: "The world is round. If we keep going backward, we will eventually end up in the first spot." Here is another comparison with Bangladesh. The best thing that came out of 1971 was that we got rid of the Pakistani Army, bureaucracy, and zamindar elite politicians. The parasites who are eating your pie right now. We enjoyed a prosperous economic growth from 1977-2006. Then Sheikh Hasina came to power. During her past 15 years of illegitimate rule, she brought back all the bad elements of Pakistan. She replaced the Pakistan army with the police, and made her close allies into billionaire elites. The only difference is that the Pakistani elites and army are huge in numbers and collectively drain the country’s wealth. In Bangladesh, Hasina and her few cronies have hoarded all the wealth and hard-earned dollars from the people. That’s why there are no billionaire Generals or thief brothers in Pakistan. They barely stole $100M. But Hasina’s cronies are all billionaires. One is Aziz Khan from Summit Group, the 41st Billionaire in Singapore. Hasina herself has more than $50B in her stash. All the projects cost 4x more than the normal price. Bangladesh has over $100B foreign debt, and the real number is unknown.
I guess one key point which was not discussed during the discussion was to clean our rotten justice system first before asking foreign investors or faculty to come and train us. Hate to say this but they might get blasphemy cases rooted against them through oppositions own personal agendas. This is the bitter truth of today and it’s not just in small cities or towns, it is certainly becoming a part of Pakistani norm now. This shift of religious extremism to normality is the first thing to happen.
Atif was honest enough to say he could not look at and comment on 50's and 60's as data is less One observation he had was there was better social peace in those 2 decades... But in 1953 there were major anti Ahmadiya riots . More than 200 Ahmadiyas were killed and property destroyed Taking that excuse Ghulam Muhammad dismissed Pakistan federal cabinet and imposed martial law... So guess one needs to delve deeper in to " Pakistani economy was best in 50 and 60..."
Atif is so right that there is enough capacity in Pakistan state to implement things Examples cited 1) Zia decided the islamize the nation and do Afganistan jihad and he turned the whole country towards that ( he put that in context and said Zia's objective was horrible and didn't help the nation that's another matter) 2) Recent example in Nov 2024 where all three parties got together to implement constitutional amendment So yes government has capacity but the moot point is is there a national plan???
Atit miyan talk was more emotional than substantive. He should have talked way out in three terms: immediate or short, medium and long. Immediate need is hunger than stability and growth. Baki sab English hai. India remain untouchable as usual .
Atif Mian is bemoaning 75 years too late! Pakistan was founded on the basis of ideology. Science was never a factor in its creation. Jinnah knew as much about Science as my rear end knows about Mars! At least Nehru, though not a Scientist, encouraged setting up of Scientific institutions in India but not Jinnah. Worse still, always the quintessential British gentleman, Jinnah told, soon after Pakistan was founded, to a bewildered Bengali crowd in Dhaka in his immaculate British accented English, that they would all have to henceforth learn Urdu and not Bengali because that was going to be the national language of Pakistan! Pakistan and Science do not go together and even if some people with good intentions tried result would be a disaster. Case in point Dr Abdus Salam, the only Nobel laureate Pakistan produced. He spent much of his life outside Pk as he was ostracized for being an Ahmediya.
Pakistan ko 1 child policy for the next 5 year karni padegi. Plus women education and women ko workforce me aana padega.Iske results 20 saal me niklenge
Atif looked harsh but he is 200 percent correct. It is not a nation but a unruly crowd.
I was lucky enough to physically attend this session. It was amazing. Not many people know that Dr. Christoffe Jaffrelot was there too. I, along the some other young men had a rather detailed discussion about Pakistan in particular and Indo-Pacific region in general.
I asked a question at 1:21:58
"Can you give me a position" ,and he summarised it all.Period.
I felt pain when atif said "Can you give me position?". This is the bitter reality, and in my opinion one of the fundamentel problem of pakistan. 😢
A big slap by Dr Atif Mian "can you give me a position?" This guy is a real nationalist who wants to do something for his motherland. Thank you The Blackhole for bringing it to us .
Prof Hoodbhoy , no words can define what you are doing for Pakistan in these trying times .
Always a pleasure hearing Atif Mian
Apparently, Atif Mian is the 2nd most popular Ahmadi muslim from pakistan after Dr. Abdus Salam who was also an Ahmadi muslim. #AhmadiMuslim
I like prof parvez for his revolutionizing ideas about education. It helps India too. No professor in India fascinated me as much he did.
Blackhole indeed is a revolutionary platform. Keep up the good work Mr. Hoodbhoy and team!
Thank you Mr.Perez Hoodbouy for your efforts in improving our awareness on issues related to Pakistan .Hearing Mr.Atif Mian ‘s solution ,I think he is not able to speak his mind completely.

There is another conversation with Atif Mia on "The Pakistan Experience" podcast and that is a lot better. The host had very well thought out questions in that podcast.
Thanks for Prof. Hoodbhoy and Dr. Atif for this conversations.
Hopefully the policy makers understand him, without a fundamental shift in policy and mindset Pakistan will not survive
Great comment by Atif mian, we are habitual in telling layieing to ourselves

Mashallah great analysis of dysfunctional economy of Pakistan.
Similar kinds debates can trigger change. Would love to see such debates in prime-time shows of news channels.
Thanks a lot for holding this talk,
Very interesting and thoughtful, rather fantastic,
Hope those at the helm of affairs, heed the message
It's pleasure to hear from such highly qualified people....In short state should have nothing to do with religion...
Dr. Atif Sb not only a great intellectual but he has a good sense of humor.
Very informative and knowledgeable program!

Great Sir, i always enjoyed and learnt whenever got opprunity to watch ur podcasts
Excellent explanation, looking forward to such session, good luck to Black Hole.
Atif Mian is a superstar
Rule of law without any discrimination is game changer. Nothing will happen unless law of the land is respected and feared.
In Korea the foundation of development was based on the land reform and consequently prosperity in rural areas which lead to expansion of service industry and
high literacy rate.
It’s a great to hear Dr Atif❤
Thoughtful extraordinary expressions.

Came across this channel yesterday and I am greatly impressed with the content. Admirable!
Such talk shows must continue to go on as Pakistanis need more to know the factual analysis.فوج کو پٹہ ڈالنے کی ضرورت ہے۔
Excellent analysis by Atif Mian about Pakistan economy
Waah.... sincere respect and regards from India.
Last but one Q about womens labour participation and its answer is a gem! Kudos!

Very informative video
