What is LG's WebOS Smart TV System?

- Smart TVs are very varied in their implementation. Generally the hardware is underpowered and the system itself doesn't feel all that snappy.
Well LG bought an OS from HP and decided to put it into all of their Smart TVs. It is marketed as a multitasking-friendly OS, but is it good? Linus gives you a rundown of WebOS and some of our thoughts on this latest generation of Smart TVs.

It's not even close. I think LG makes the best Smart TVs on the market.
00:40 WebOS is from Palm. You didn't mention HP bought it from them. So LG got WebOS from Palm's smart phones.

4 years later and apparently it's one of the best SmartTV OS out there. Still looks the same though which is not a bad thing.

I would like to see smart TVs include a web browser, a place for a cable tuner card, and the ability to hook an external hard drive to it or a place to add a hard drive built into the TV for recording shows without having to have a DRV, cable box, or a PC hooked up to the TV. These are needed so that the TV can truly be the perfect all in one entertainment device. These three would be really simple to add to the next gen smart TVs.

Why don't we just make a computer that can run games, runs a gaming operating system, but can also run regular windows/mac applications, and can play tv. Whoever does this first and does this well will corner the market on this. I am sick of not being able to stream to my stupid samsung smart tv.

meowmeowfishfish Gaming quality. with an ssd. That isn't as slow as this Samsung stupid tv I have. Takes forever to get into even a menu. unresponsive at best. don't go samsung.

E3agl What model Samsung TV do you have? I have the 50" F5500 and switching through apps is pretty snappy. Not as quick as the WebOS, but quick enough to not bother me.
A longer demo of the interface would have been nice.

Is there a difference between WebOs and LG AI ThinQ? The specs for LG C8 on bestbuy list LG AI ThinQ as the smart platform, while the LG C8 on Sam's Club list WebOs for smart platform.
Watching this 2021 because just bought a LG CX and was new to WebOs, stumbled onto a very young-er Linus LUL wow!
We have a 2013 LG Smart TV & it's already starting to dim on its own. It also has what seems to be a scratch on the INSIDE bottom corner. I've already had to get some LEDs replaced so I turned down the brightness. Is it reaching its life span only after 4 years? Is it worth fixing the problems mentioned?
Lgs webos works well and does what it says on the tin however the Samsung interface, remote control and voice control is a more slick affair and easier to navigate overall.

I have a year old LG Smart TV. I freaking love it. I use the youtube app pretty often, and the browser occasionally, both pretty good. Use my phone as a pretty full time remote control. The rest of the apps are OK I guess, some amazing, others relatively shabby, but that happens everywhere. The magic remote too is pretty good and is literally the only device that recognises my Indian accent with about a 99% accuracy.

gave my TV to my Mum - who needs the goggle box when we have the google box....TV, who cares.
i ordered the lg 9500 55 inch 4k tv i will be buying the camera for it for gesture controls its something i was wanted to use for my tv i do like it that u can change channels and volumes to buy using voice commands.
I was given a replacement TV from Samsung after my dual core 64 inch plasma broke (had weird artifact lines horizontally across the screen) and the tv I was given was newer also costed $1000 more then the defective one it's a LED and the blacks are really amazing and colors too! (according to my eyes) also the quad core is alot snappier when switching between apps love it tho the GUI is abit ugly this Web OS looks promising.
Is there a USB port? Because I would plug in a mouse/keyboard combo so it's easy to type and click on various this instead of the d-pad or point with the remote.
I see this is 6 years old. Given we just scrapped a 2019 Samsung because it crashes all the time and replaced it with brand new JVC which simply cannot be updated even though some of the shipped apps dont work.
Webos is still for sale is it up to date and stable?

nice, i think im going to buy the 43" version and use it for strictly tv/movies/blurays while having it wall mounted.
also, how IS the wall mounting on this tv? ive seen that on other tv models, the hdmi ports are all literally blocked from use if you decide to wall mount the tv. does this tv share that problem?

Iv got the lg 47LB650V smart 3D 47" LED TV and it time LG webos can be slow at times when it's come to changing channels or going thought settings and it's been a pain trying to edit my inputs names

Brother, you didn't tell everyone that LG TVs webOS doesn't have flash player and do not even allow to install a plugin, which is a big drawback as many online websites use Adobe flash player to play any content, people should reconsider there TV buying options

@NCIX Tech Tips To bad that youtube app on this webos only show 3 videos at main screen instead of 30 (like on my fullhd monitor) and also it doesnt provide smooth scrolling during the browsing searched videos like for example on ps4 youtube app.

Phones already have 1440p screens while tv manufacturers brag about 1080p on their 55 inch tvs
pixels as big as your fist, oh and out of wack contrast, saturation and sharpness and high response time. All to watch content with 50% adds, I don't see the appeal.
Phones are tiny Tvs are so much bigger.

Had a 2012 lg cinema tv all apps worked fine , upgraded to a 2017 lg webos uj701v and the memory is garbage every time you put TH-cam app on after 2 videos it crashes and out of memory app restarting message comes up . Even happening on Netflix.

I have one of these. I like it but I can't stand that feature how it dims on dark scenes. I can't find any way to turn that off. If anyone knows please let me know
It's called dynamic contrast, I really hate it and took a while to figure out what it was.
Do you know how to turn it off?
not on a TV, but on my monitor it was under display settings, and there was an option for dynamic contrast.
I tried it. it doesn't solve the problem but it does help. Thanks

don't know if you've found an answer to this yet, but this is how you do it:
Settings -> Picture -> Energy Saving -> Select "Off"
No more dimming.

OK cool interface and multitasking.. But I do only one thing at a time. If LGs Webos will let me stream HBO GO, FiOS app or even WWE network then I am sold if not I don't see the huge impact it will make .

A step in the right direction, but nowhere near a leap. I'm/you're still better using your phone or tablet to get web info whilst watching TV. Android (or Apple) would be better at this, but TV companies, such as LG, don't yet cater for phone/computer users.

Wasn't LG exactly the one not to buy because of their borderline terms of use...? They've been on the news and got discussed on LTTs videos. So why they descided to make a video about it, kinda weird, IMO.

1st of all I usually Love all of your tech videos (Hat's off Job Well Done!) unfortunately on this one... I've had my Web-OS TV for going on 3 months now... and I absolutely HATE it.. I hope that they are paying you to do this review...b/c Web- OS is so crappy and limited to what's offered as along the way of apps.. NOT ANDROID Supported.. Ridiculous I don't even think I've seen an option to add Cinamax, I understand HBO was added but I had to go through Hulu get access to Showtime, etc. I think I would have been better off with hooking an antenna up on my roof than having such piece of garbage hanging on my wall.. would sell it for a little of nothing if it wasn't for the fact that I'm still paying for it..and believe me when I say i'll do anything possible to get a different brand and I'll to avoid LG televisions and probably the rest of their products in the future... Comes off me to be a money-hungry company that will make anything and when you get it, It's as if I hear the LG sales rep saying "Ohhh I failed to mention... please my responses are limited.. you must ask the right questions. By the way for cord-cutters... when you see this LG Web OS tv... pretend as if you didn't and i'd advise you to not be swayed into or should I say swindled into buying one... worst purchase ever.... Save yourself the headache and but an Android supported tv....or one that simply has chromecast. I say all this publicly because I certainly wish someone would have let me know....

Spent around $1000 and got WebOS TV. WebOS is so short of useful apps. The games available on the LG Content store are worst than the old school Atari games. I don't know why LG and Samsung are going for their own OS instead of using Android TV OS. Android Play Store is already full of useful apps and the user will have millions of apps to chose from.
Using their own OS might be good for the brand in the long run, but it's a big loss for the customers. The customers spend thousands of dollars to become their beta-testers.
