    Great Intro! Love that you show yourself playing guitar as you begin. In the day and age of TH-cam flashiness and loudness, it is nice to have a welcoming song that is not a pre-recorded intro song. It shows more of your personality. I come here for the pens but stay for the conversation. Thank you for authentic to the bone!

      @@InkquiringMinds In the other types of audiences, I can see that. Yet, we are here because we like Fountain Pens. Plus, people who really like fountain pens want to also connect with people also. I have noticed that the more entertaining pen review videos all have a bit more of a warm-up and introduction to them. I want to see the pen but it seems most videos are all pens and hands and no spirit. Gets kind of boring when there is boring dialogue and very little quirky outtakes and edited joke videos splashed into them. Which is why I keep coming back to your videos.

    Greetings from Australia.
    Great video.
    I ordered one of these today.
    I did some research and from this I ascertained that this pen is direct knock-off from the Conklin All American in wood.
    My info came from a reviewer who had them side by side. The jinhao has been improved as the cap is sealed whereas the Conklin is not sealed around the clip and this dries out the nib.
    So this saved me about 80Aud.
    A great video. Keep them coming.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for sharing, Scouzeboy! But, the Conklin All-American is obviously made by Jinhao for Conklin to sell as a Conklin. This is the same as Jinhao making the steel nib version of the new Parker 51 for Parker to sell as a Parker. The Jinhao 85 is the same pen.

    Another fun review to make time fly. Last week I said I was wary of wood pens because they might crack, but this one is clean and simple and I like it. It's big but not a wrist breaker like the 159 or the Moonblanc pens. Swapping some parts to get the pen you want can be more satisfying than just buying a pen and hoping it checks all the boxes. It might not be "pure" but it's all yours like an old pair of jeans.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some swaps and swap attempts are not so successful, but it is very satisfying when the pen becomes more than the parts.

    Doug I inked my Walnut 9056 yesterday with Noodler's Walnut. I had tweaked my
    med. nib back in 2020, and it is a decent writer, with some feedback. Like the feel
    in my hand when writing and have found it not too chunky. Not entirely happy with the

    Doug, this may or may not change your opinion about the feel of wooden pens. I have a problem of the wood pens drying out and splitting. In an attempt to mitigate this, I placed the barrel and cap of a couple of these 9056 in a bottle of Formby's for a couple of weeks. He'll of a mess to clean up and it didn't work. They still split, but now they feel FANTASTIC in hand. Something to do with the wax in the formula. Worth a try and if all else fails, this is a great product to put on your kitchen cabinets.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the wood is properly sealed with a gloss of polyester, then the wood is preserved and there is no environmental issue. But most "wooden" pens seem to only coat the wood in a light, porous sealant and they dry out.

    Looks nice-love wood that seems not destroyed in the process -and thank god they didn’t put their logo on the top of cap like on their parker imitations which cheapen the look of those pens (a logo pressed out probably 20 at one time in something that I guess is supposed to look like pewter but doesn’t ever match any metal on their pens ... I never could tell what the image was until Doug mentioned their chariot logo.). I like wood & have no problem with the wood colour changing with use (like I dyed veg tanned leather journal covers) but wouldn’t like ink colour dying the cap! Might pick one up with this great price point!

  • @AdamGoodson
    @AdamGoodson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, we need some better or higher quality woods for these pens. Do you think that the production of wooden pens is a very finicky production? Meaning that the wood falls apart or splits and that there is also plenty of the wood that is shaved off and left in the shop floors to be swept up and thrown away. Maybe the expense of the wood is much higher than maybe the sweeping up of plastic scraps that can be remelted and used again.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, wood is more finicky than plastic. Wood expands and contracts with humidity hence one of the reasons I do not prefer them.

    Not a pen for me, although I must admit I like the look and feel of a wooden pen. I thought I'd hate it, but I have a Jinhao 51A, and the wooden body is just about the only redeeming quality in that pen for me. They're nice to hold and play around with. Jinhao would make this pen 10 times more interesting to me if they just make a more hollow / hourglass section.
    I love that they didn't feel like they needed a fancy clip on this. That's one of the things that keeps me from using my 159 a lot.
    All of that said, I might pick one up as a nib tester, or just a fidget pen. The interchangeable nib units is a very big plus.
    My compliments on the ink choice here. It really makes the pen look nice. I like Diamine's guitar collection, and it's only fitting for you to use it. I use tobacco burst a lot!

      Just tried and failed. While the Moonman nib unit is rougly the same size as Jinhao's and can be pushed into the Jinhao, the threads don't match and the housing isn't kept in place by anything. When I tried to put a converter in the pen the Moonman nib unit was just pushed out. So I assume to replace the Jinhao nib unit with Moonman this way one would have to glue it in.

    *sigh* I have no money for MORE fountain pens! I have no NEED for MORE fountain pens. I just have a compulsion to buy more fountain pens, and it doesn't help when you show one that hits a couple of my buttons! I LOVE the finer nibs! If you want to get rid of that nib, tell me what it would cost for you to mail it to me in Texas, and I'll send you one of those Jinhao medium nibs that came on my X450 or x750 that I've been swapping out for Jowo #6 EF nibs slowly over time (since the $15 Jowo nib is three times the cost of the pen!).
    I seriously would love a source for #6 EF sized nibs that are "Chinese" or "Japanese" EF, as opposed to the wester EF from Jowo or Bock. It's just not worth sending such an inexpensive pen to nibmeister, but I really, REALLY wish there were smaller nibs for the #6 Jinhaos (and others!).

    As I get more and more into Chinese pens and have a plethora of replacement nibs and parts I realize that it really is surprising how bad some of the nibs are. Wing sung has been about 50-50 for hooded nibs being adequate writers, pretty good for others. Jinhao nibs are consistently great in the #6, the smaller ones are usually pretty good too. I thought moonman nibs were good before but I tried out an m8 I haven't inked up since I got it months ago and it just wouldn't write at all, swap to a jinhao and it writes perfectly.
    I'm thinking about buying jowo nibs to swap for some of the #6 moonman pens, the #5 moonman nibs are OK imo. The Lamy style wing sung nibs just suck in general, and all replacements I've gotten (wing sung or other generic) are hit or miss. It's just tough with most of these chinese pens because out of the box most of them are dry (sometimes prohibitively so) with the exception of penbbs and jinhao tbh.
    Seems to me that many of these pens are glorified nib holders but for the price of a jowo nib it still isn't something to complain about. I wish there was an easy high quality hooded nib or Lamy style nib (besides a real Lamy) to drop in to improve them, the Bobby fude hooded nibs write well but a bit too broad for me.
    I also ordered up some white lightning ink surfactant to see if making sample vials I can doctor up some freer flowing ink to use with some of the stingier pens.

      @C W ... Like most of us, I own lots of Chinese pens nowadays. One is an old-fashioned, chunky and hooded _Hero 565,_ another the much classier-looking _Hero 1501._ The 565 arrived as a lovely writer, but the 1501 was too dry. It responded very well to _nib tine tweaking,_ though... you press the nib's tines down on to card, gently but firmly, while supporting the nib's middle with the index finger. Do keep checking for flow increase between presses until it is to your taste. You get a feel for how much pressure to exert and, once the ink flow improves, it seems to stay that way. Combined with a little tip-smoothing, it can transform a pen, and Chinese models are mostly inexpensive enough to learn on. My driest pen was a _Pilot Vanishing Point,_ costing many times what the Hero did-but I (nervously) used the same technique on its all-gold, hooded nib and the ink flow improved greatly. A reticent writer is a pain, after all.

      @@InkquiringMinds You have a way of reviewing things I'm looking at, and clinch the deal! I bought a Wing Sung 601 "Flighter" after your review, then bought some bent nibs for it, and just ordered a stainless hood for it! Now I'm looking at some Moon Blancs!

      @@dimhelmet That's wonderful, John! Thank you! Just a tip for you, if you like the Moonman P135, there is a special limited edition P135 in red with gold trim and a red jewel on the top finial. By limited edition I expect they have thousands not hundreds, but you can see them on eBay and Etsy (esybuy).
