Modular Concepts: Phase, a Matter of Timing [Bitwig Studio | The Grid]

  • This tutorial explores phase for driving step sequencers and animating sound. We start by looking at Bitwig Studio's default tempo-locked behavior and then manipulate phase signals to create interesting relationships. Phase is a uniquely powerful idea, which is why it is central to The Grid and worth getting comfortable with.

Coolest f***ing DAW out there. I’ve used a handful over the years and for me, Ableton felt very deflating. I know I’ll get flack for that but it just didn’t click with me. I understand the connection to the developers between ableton and Bitwig but something about this program makes me want to go deeper into its properties and options and offerings and really learn it. Anyway, cheers! Best DAW I have personally used over the past 24 years.

Very interesting. I've always thought about phase as something related to audio signals (e.g. phase cancellation), but it looks like I've been missing the more general version that can be applied to any parameter, more akin to out-of-sync. Cool stuff.

I rarely like or comment videos on youtube, but with Bitwig I just can't help it. Best DAW out there! And this gave some great inspiration how to use phase creatively :) Thanks!

Good video, I hope there was mentioned different ways to keep patterns with a different division in time. Say, I have a gate pattern of 5 steps, but a pitch pattern of 11 steps. Running those creates interesting evolving patterns, but it's not immediately evident, how to make them run at the same rate. I found out eventually that the Transport module from the LFO category can set the rate, but it's something that might have been sensible to mention here.

Excellent and extremely helpful video. One question though: even though the lower of the two step sequencers is connected to the input of the low pass filter, it appears to be modulating the skew and fold of the triangle oscillator. Why is that?

Could you somehow use this to phase shift a VFO for real-time overdubbing? (I.e. to 'fake' multiple instruments of the same timbre playing the same part at the same time.)

thanks for this great introduction videos! One thing I dont get to work the same as in the video, is that after I recreated the whole device with the same elements, the phase and everything else is always running, whether the play button is pressed or not. The only thing that isn't running without the play button and stopping with the stop button is the metronome. Is that a special setting that needs to be done?

Hello Henning, sequencer modules like Gates will always run also if transport is not playing, unless you disable the Phase input pre-cord connection. You can also disable "Fre-run when stopped" via the Poly Grid/FX Grid settings in the inspector panel.

    Unfortunately, more provocative than informative.
