Your boat is great; it's 100% utilitarian yet you're arguably the best fluke fisherman in the United States, maybe the world. John Skinner the legend. Another great video.
Winter was warmer then usual which means the netters did well out at the shelf.. Which to me means alot of short fish for the recreational angler to catch.. I get tired of sbort after short too but i guess thats why it’s called fishing and not catching hehe. Have a great season no matter what you go for ;) tight lines !
Your videos brought back so memories of fishing with my father back in the 1960s. In the spring we’d fish for flounder out of Seaford. We’d catch 80-120 flounder. He’d keep 20 or so, then set me up with the rest on the sidewalk at the end of piers where the party boats docked in Sheepshead Bay. I’d sell them for 2 for a buck, made enough to pay for the boat and motor he rented.
Hey John, I just discovered your channel. ( I subscribed). Since I grew up on L.I., I'm using your videos to get my fishing fix while I'm stuck here in Kenya with the international border lock down.
John, I get better fishing reports from your videos then I get from OTW or other sources lol. Please keep posting them weekly😁👍. Thank you for all the info, Your videos are the best source of information from all that I once out there. I even invested in quantum real with power handle and Nexus rod MH. I'm gonna try it out 2 days from now.
Good to see I back! Watched all the florida videos! Excellent! I’m still here in South Pasadena Fl Waiting to rtn to LI.....great video as usual John....
Great vid John, your definitely on the flukes tail but jus wish they were bigger in size, but still awesome to watch you catch em, I just got my boat maintenance gonna be out tomorrow, take care John 🤙🏼🤙🏼
I'm surprised you didn't head for the shallows 3-8 ft on the outgoing tide change. My biggest early season fluke come from fishing the shallows on an outgoing afternoon tide that has warmed up in the mid-day sun. And you boat is just perfect for that action.
In this area they also start tight to the shore, but once the sandeels and fluke in these numbers are on the shoal, the inner fishing drops off. My brother was on the inside spot during this trip and found poor fishing. I made a couple of close-in drifts on the way home and found only searobins.
My god, what i wouldnt give to have conditions like the ones in this video. The glassy smooth clear water. I live in Delaware and i have been fishing the bay almost all of my life and i have seen the water like that mabye a handfull of times. Can you give some advise in fishing cloudy and windy conditions? I love your videos and im prettey sure ive watched about all of them. Thanks for what you do!
I find it very hard to do because I'm really focused on the fishing and not out there to do a TV show. That said, I'll throw in a few verbal thoughts here and there. It actually makes the off-water narration easier.
John Skinner Fishing thank you. Made it out on opening day in NJ. Not much for size. Read all your books and in the water I’m in I’ll need a powerful trolling motor for tackle that light. Heading back out wedneday. Tight lines !
Great vid as always.Do you think small ones are in and big ones are not in yet or commercial fishing took toll on big ones?Thank you so much for florida fishing and north fishing.God has blessed you and you have shared for the want to be out there Guys and girls. Thanks!!!
The commercials can keep 14'' fish in NY so I doubt they're responsible for wiping out the big ones. I don't know what the deal is with the larger fish. May is typically excellent for them on these waters.
Great video John! I can use alot of the techniques on the west coast! If you ever find yourself in California feel free to hit me up, ill take you out.
I wonder if it’s because of spawning and the larger fluke are all either currently spawning or are done and moved to deeper water. We have the same thing in piglet sound where numbers are really high but very small or medium juveniles from last year
Love the CGI to make the Sound look calm. Been windy every day for months. How did you find calm waters? LOL. Better hope the draggers didn't see your haul. They are out every day in Gardiner's Bay. Fish don't stand a chance.
Hello John from Newport. 70 miles up the coast. I have found that 90 % of the fluke I catch are under 19in. I use all the same gear that you use. Any thoughts on why so many juveniles? Do you blame overfishing? Just curious. Thanks
I really don't know. The best fishing I've ever seen was when the limit was two at 21''. And it seems that whatever they set the limit at, the vast majority of the fish fall below that. If you watch the first two fishing videos I ever posted on this channel, you'll see that fishing recorded on May 16 in the same location this video was recorded on May 24. Twenty-inchers were the smalls.
I want to know where all of the fluke are in the Peconics. For sure I think the depressed squid runs in the bay as compared to years past are hurting all of the fisheries.
I should have left it on. I use the tinsel one when the sandeels are in there, but took it off early when I wasn't seeing bait. Then I just kept catching and didn't change back.
Couldn't having a 19" minimum limit basically cull the larger fish so only small ones survive? I'm pretty sure only females get that big. I always thought slot limits were a better way of doing it vs minimum limit. That way the big doormat breeders are still breeding.
Peconic bay has been terrible for fluke. I have caught a lot of fluke in LI sound but also all shorts. As far as quantity of fish it has been really good in LI sound but as far as keepers....
Your boat is great; it's 100% utilitarian yet you're arguably the best fluke fisherman in the United States, maybe the world. John Skinner the legend. Another great video.
16 ft aluminum boats are great for LI sound
It’s all he needs because he has friends to fish with that have fast montauk boats
Long Island Fishing everyone needs a FWB! Friends With Boats! Lol
The trolling motor costs more than the boat.... love it.
Do a video on when is best to go fishing. Tides , weather, current etc
Seriously!
The best time is any time u can get out
4:20 sounds bite is pretty awesome. Sound of the cast, birds going crazy in the background and then the bail closing.
Welcome back, John. Tight lines! Stay safe.
Nice to see the depth finder and tracking real-time. Thanks. Disappointed our season down here in NC so limited.
As always, great video. You're up there one week and had more fluke action than most will see in the season. Love it! See you next month.
I've been using those Savagegear Sandeels on the South coast of England for years now, to great affect. Great lures, in all sizes.
Looks like southern NJ for the past 3-4 years. Shorts all day long. Doesn't fill the freezer but the actions is fun.
Gave up the fluke fishing in nj. I focus on inshore trolling now. Bonita, mahi, kings in really heavy last year.

Can't go wrong with the SG sandeels, they're very effective. I just wish they were a little more durable.

Anthony Giarrusso .. thanks, turned out to be a great day, ended up puttin 4 doormats on board 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks John, big numbers and welcome back.

Can a boat company please sponsor Skinner and give him a new boat? Guy deserves it and you'd get tons of advertising.
Thanks. There is definitely an opportunity there for some company. In the meantime I'll keep hitting the bilge switch.
I'm still learning about fishing. Thanks Mr Skinner

Hi John, welcome back north. Do you suggest trimming back the hair on the bucktails for more tail action from the gulp?
Yes, when using the smaller 4-inch grubs.

Welcome back John! See you've wasted no time at all getting back into the northeast groove.
Curious. What color & size sand eels worked on those strippers? Thx!

@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you!
Hey John have you had a chance to try out any of the black hole rods for fluke?
I have not.
Gotta love those days when there's nobody around and it's like glass out there. As long as it's not 95 degrees and humid with no air.
That's a nice fishing day, can't get tired of watching your videos. Its been years i do it. What reel are you using ?
quantum accurist. There's a link in the video description.
Can I know what liquid aroma you use for the bait?
Very nice, at least you found a good patch of fish
Love the videos, keep it up bro.
The legend is back
John, I guess Florida got too hot for you. Although, it seemed you had a great time with the Reds, Snook and everything else.
Quick question. I was looking into your rod and reel setup. My dad said the nexus rod was mostly for ocean fluking. Any way you can help me?
Great video John! I can use alot of the techniques on the west coast! If you ever find yourself in California feel free to hit me up, ill take you out.
John,
What kind of rod and reel are you utilizing in the video for the fluke.
Thanks and always enjoy your videos!
Walt
The links to all of the gear are in the video description.
When it’s wind against current, do you always use the trolling motor to go with the current or ever against? And what speed do you typically set it?
I'm always wanting to go with the current with the line almost straight down. 0.7-1.2mph is ideal
I wonder if it’s because of spawning and the larger fluke are all either currently spawning or are done and moved to deeper water. We have the same thing in piglet sound where numbers are really high but very small or medium juveniles from last year

Why do you prefer the bait caster over a spinning reel? Is it because of line twist or another reason?
yaaayyyyyy! welcome home
Did you install the fish finder and trolling motor or did you go somewhere to get it installed?
My friend installed it.
Hey John, any idea how old that class of fish would be? Just curious
Love the CGI to make the Sound look calm. Been windy every day for months. How did you find calm waters? LOL. Better hope the draggers didn't see your haul. They are out every day in Gardiner's Bay. Fish don't stand a chance.
I passed 3 draggers as I was heading out.
Hey John what kind of boat is that? Looks perfect for the sound, im torn between trying to use a kayak or just get right into a boat like that.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you
Curious... which tide do you target for fluke in the Sound?
I prefer end of incoming beginning of outgoing.
The fluke I caught last week at the canal were also very thin.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks for the reply. I hope to see you at the fishing show in prov next year if you go. Good luck!
Hey skinner how come you don't use the savage gear sand eels when you see fluke spit up sand eel while you're fluke fishing?
I don't see it as a vertical jigging lure suitable to presenting a Gulp bait.
What part of the sound do you fish in
What are the clips you use at the end of the leader that appear to make changing lures so easy?
Tactical angler #75 clip.
Thank you.
I fish in Milford ct I a small bay do u have any tips
When you catch one and it has other's following that's exciting cause you know that probably means a concentration of fish.
What spinning rod are you using
I have to ask, might be a silly question but I'm trying to earn, what is the difference between your tsunami fluke rod and your white tsunami tog rod?
The tog rod is a faster taper, so I don't use it on fluke because I feel the softer tip takes away some of the jig action. Good question.
Keep up the great videos!!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
how do you keep them from biting off the tails of the gulp
Fluke don't do that as much as seabass, of which there weren't any.
Hello, what kind of the boat you using? Length, width?
1974 16' Starcraft Holiday converted to a CC, 40HP Etec
Where’s your power handle?
The water has been very cold. Do you think this has affected fishing this year?
It put things behind, but I can't see it as an excuse for the lack of keepers this trip.
What happened to your kicker motor?
I got tow insurance instead.
where are all the weakfish in the peconics this year, it might be a lack of squid?
I want to know where all of the fluke are in the Peconics. For sure I think the depressed squid runs in the bay as compared to years past are hurting all of the fisheries.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing lets hope its just the water temps . they might be in deep cool water with lockjaw
What rod are you using?
There are links to all of the gear in the video description.
Pardon the perhaps silly question from a novice, why a bait- caster and not a spinning reel?
One-handed easy depth control with a flipping switch baitcaster. Good question.
fluke aren't liking the tsumami glass minnow yet this year?
I should have left it on. I use the tinsel one when the sandeels are in there, but took it off early when I wasn't seeing bait. Then I just kept catching and didn't change back.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ahhh, maybe i should've have finished the video before i commented hahaha
Can I do this in Savannah,ga
I know they do it in Fl, Texas, CA,... so I guess so.
You are the best!!
I went fishing last week in the back bays of sea icle nj and caught 0
i caught a couple in the back bays near there. give it another 7 days when the water gets up to 60.
What happened to never leave fish to find fish ?
It wasn’t the targeted species he was looking for. Hence, he left the striped bass to find fluke.
Well at least it was encouraging in the amount of fish you saw.
What day did you fish on ?
5/22

Commercial keepers !!!

Agree 100%
Almost all shorts. I blame that on commercial fishing and regulations. There is a good amount of meat on an 18" flounder :(
