This game is beautiful and whoever they hired to play Mimir & how he speaks of the lore is truly mesmerizing. I really hope he'll be added in the next installment. Odin sounds incredibly wise & wicked. Can't wait to see how he sounds & looks.
Odin is prophesied to die at the hands of Fenrir, so he captures and cages Fenrir - which in turn results in Fenrir developing a grudge against Odin. Baldr dies only when the denizens of Asgard are testing his newfound immortality, which Frigg bestowed upon him after learning he was fated to die. The prophecy that describes Loki as the traitor is what drives Asgard's distrust of Loki, which - combined with Fenrirs captivity, ultimately drives Loki to betray them. It's likely that if Odin had never learned of the prophecy, Ragnarok (as we know) it would not happen. Odin is irony incarnate.
@@Apoc2K how is loki a traitor of the aesir if he never even associated with them in the first place? if ur following the true mythology then yes this makes sense but if following game lore then the loki part makes no sense
Skew or screw? Well, it's a matter of perspective anyway. The game is in the Giant's perspective and it is just natural to make the Aesirs as the villains.
Not enough of the Norse mythology survived, there is no Norse holy book, so it can be skewed and re-written as seen fit. Entirely possible this is what the vikings did as they practised the religion.
@@emotionalsupportostrich2480 Very true. Both Greek and Norse mythologies are very much interpreted how the people of today see fit. Much like in this game's universe, the same goes for Marvel's version of the mythology, with the mighty Thor becoming a member of the Avengers.

Odin allfather, the king of the gods, lord of the nine realms. His power and magic is unrivalled by any living creature and yet he does everything he can to avoid the inevitability of death. How very.... human of him
D i doubt it, I think Tyr is alive. for one, the missing panel in Odin’s chamber would have revealed the secret etchings. Mimir even mentioned they were the first to discover that right under Odin’s nose
Is it just me or is anybody else super excited for the first cut scene where we see Odin? I can only imagine how badass he will be. Yeah he's the villain and we're not supposed to like him, but I'm sure seeing him for the first time I'll admire him quite a bit.
I just can't wait to see him. What i loved about the game is that you never see him but you kind of feel his presence. Between his icy crows, the stories about him, how everything went downhill in the Nine Realms because of him, the fact that the villains follow his lead, his shadow completely looms over the game. It makes you feel he is spying on everything and everyone.
@@dikastederook6380 I'm trying to temper my excitement just a wee bit. Odin could look like a heavily armored monstrosity, a more traditional Viking form but of course with a great deal more bling or a decrepit old man wearing a cloak running around screaming nonsensical gibberish all the time.
@@Sealhunt I imagine he’ll look kind of like how he does in AC Valhalla, old, one eyed man with a cloak and hood watching all from the shadows while using manipulation and lies rather than force to get what he wants
For those who don’t know Odin. He Is God of War, God of Wisdom and the king of Asgard. He is basically a competent version of Ares, calculating strategist like Athena(heck he is basically the male version of Athena) and the might of Zeus. You know he is gonna be a dangerous foe Kratos and Atreus gonna face.
There are a lot of parallels between Zeus and Odin in this universe. The most obvious being the FEAR. Zeus was overwhelmed by Fear from Pandora's box. This lead to him becoming a tyrant, attacking Kratos and lead to the destruction of Olympus. Meanwhile, Odin has had the prophecy of Ragnarok hanging over him for centuries. He has become obsessed with avoiding it and is now willing to do anything to have even the slightest change of changing his fate and that of Asgard. I can kind of sympathise with Odin. If you knew how you were supposed to die and who was meant to kill you. You would probably go crazy thinking about it.
Jeremy Davis: the actor who portrayed Charles Manson in the movie Helter Skelter and is the same man who did the voice over of Baldr in this game. A very good choice.
Slavsco 32 eh it would get tiresome. Hopefully they end it here with this trilogy. Kinda anticlimactic if we know he's just gonna survive and go around killing gods like they're nothing. @@geordiejones5618 Don't all leaders fall? You can become king in multiple ways. Obviously one way is to usurp the throne. He has the position and power: even if you see his means of attaining it as illegitimate.
Odin is not only evil but also insecure and jealous as hell, considering his marriage to Freya was a pact for peace. He not only did use her and learn her ways and magic and in the process, know her weaknesses too, but he also took her warrior spirit by ripping out her wings. And then, he locked her out in Midgard only. Doing all that to the Vanir goddess, the leader of the Valkyries itself and the Queen of the 9 realms, Odin really is a very vicious King. On top of that, he's the Allfather. And that's only what he's done to his wife. His torture of Mimir and him sending for Faye, and later Kratos and Atreus too. Deal with that kinda power, damn!
The way they hype him tells me he is going to be fascinating. I bet we will meet him in Asgard, sitting in his Throne, wielding his mighty spear Gungir, only then to enthusiastically greet Kratos and Atreus like:" I am the Allfather, welcome to my Kingdom, you might have heard about me a lot." Atreus' responds by saying:" Not a lot of good things, we heard you were Evil" Odin answers:"Good and Evil are subjective." "One would say that I am an evil tyrant, but if you would look at the bigger picture, I can be said to be a Hero, trying to save his own and the other Realm's future from extinction". Kratos, annoyed by Odin's attempt to whitewash himself, he threatens him: "Stop trying to deceive us, we know what you truly want." A fight begins Yes, my dialogue needs some polishing, but I do think that Odin will try to deceive Kratos and Atreus.

It is said that Brok and Sindri, to atone for Mollnir and Thors rampage across the realms and all the people he slaughtered with it, tried to make a new weapon on par with Mollnir. But as their patheon was declining as less and less people believed in them, they had to wait to get enough power to forge it. Together, like with Mollnir. They decided it to be a Hammer again so that everyone who gazes upon it may remember their folly and their shame and they decided to make it the total opposite of Mollnir. Mollnir destroyed everything in its path and so this new weapon they willed, shall repair everything it touched, even flesh. Without adornments and fancy, a HAMMER like made from purest gold, to be wielded not by Aesir or Vaneir but the humans they saw so much potential in. But their powers were not enough, in the most crucial moment Brok and Sindri were gone like fog in the wind, leaving the HAMMER without a name. ... But the hands of fate can't be denied and as time passed it fell towards Midgard. It was found by a man who used it for many a year, till it was time to pass on the hammer and the profession to his son, Fix-It-Felix, Jr.
I’ve got a feeling that when we meet Odin, Thor and maybe some other Aesir gods in the sequel, they won’t be exactly as Mimir described them. Although Mimir is wise, I think he’s biased in his tales, so it would be interesting to see the gods he describes in a different light in the next game.
Aidan Rogers ; nah I think they're exactly how he described them remember how thor viciously beat up his son? To the point that he couldn't even walk properly which let Atreus kill him
I actually agree. It would give a lot more depth to the story, Because both sides are not completely good or evil. Odin could be portrayed as man out protect his people and his kingdom but ultimately driven mad by fear and paranoia. It also would be a little more accurate to the source material
Mimir in mythology is a jotunn. He also was disgusted by the thought of a child killing their parent. Odin is an Aesir, which as jotunn Mimir hates, Odin is also the son a giantess who was Mimir's sister. If what think happened Mimir feeding Kratos lies so that he kills Odin makes sense
Probably not, but I would enjoy if they went in that direction. A good way to reinforce this would be if the Jotunns had some skeletons in their closet as well, which would at least partially justify the Aesir's antipathy towards them. Doesn't mean Odin has to be a good guy, but Odin the Ruthlessly Practical sounds more interesting to me than Odin the Ridiculously Evil For Lolz.
Kratos' rejection of the idea of fate is something that he has every reason to believe, having killed the Sisters of Fate himself and changed his destiny...but I recall that it was _Gaia_ who gave him that idea, and encouraged him to always refuse to give in during his second big journey. It actually feels a bit touching that, despite betraying Kratos in the end, Gaia taught Kratos something important, that he took to heart, and is now teaching his son. As awful as Kratos himself and the others he encountered in his original adventures were, when you think about, Kratos still learned some things from both his experiences and the advice of others, and now is applying and teaching those things. It's even more moving considering most of them were his _family_
The thing is, that Odin isn't your typical Alldaddy (like Zeus), but he's a trickster. He was frequently walking between people in disguise, tricking people and rewarding/punnishing them. Also, because of his disguises, everything was Odin. Blizzard, old fisherman, beautiful woman, giant monster, Wild Hunt, Wednesday,...
God I love this game. The writers are fucking geniuses or got a god damn good ounce of coke to do this. The AEsir Gods as the real evil and the Jotun as the misunderstood good while Loki is the son of a Spartan God and a Jotun. What a fucking gorgeous picture they painted.
Actually thinking about it, Baldur's mentality must be terrible. His mental health was on a declining rate for over a century, and he really didn't feel happiness for nearly his entire life. I feel bad for him.
@@JustSendMeLocationPlease we will part with him for a part as the jotunhiem mural says that he will be recaptured by Odin and he will tie his head to another tree

@@fujibooze3594 True. But it's still open territory for God of War to explore. No telling what twists and turns they could take with China's rich mythos.
fun fact: Mimir is Odins uncle who was a peace prisoner with the vanir after the Aesir and Vanir war, but the Vanir cut of his head and sent it to Odin who didn't want his wisdom to die and revived his head and placed it next to him in Valhall.
3:00 “he doesn’t know what you are” Mimir already knew Kratos was a god meaning he knew about Greece. He just played stupid . That means he knows a lot more as well why he just never told them about Kratos fate etc
He knew Kratos was a god, or atleast a mortal from another land, but he didn't know Kratos' full extent, he only knew Kratos was from Greece when Kratos called out to Athena during the boat ride back to his home, and he only knew Kratos was Zeus' son/the Ghost of Sparta when Kratos encounters an illusion of Zeus in Helheim and when he explicitly told Mimir that Zeus is his father. ("I finally get it now, I'm dangling from the hips of the bloody Ghost of Sparta!"). Mimir is only the smartest in the Norse nine realms, he only knows about other lands and their gods and legends through Tyr.
Honestly Mimir is such a cool way to introduce the player to Odin and Thor. He hilariously makes them out to be a pair of dumb assholes but also creates a sense of dread surrounding the both of them. Thor might be one of the most powerful and feared entities in the nine realms but he's also a "sweaty bawbag".
44:30 So, the actual myth, as told by one of the two books (poetic Edda and the other I can’t remember). Yes, the hammer was stolen, the giant wanted Freya’s hand in marriage, but the Aesir all tried to figure out how to get the hammer back without giving up Freya. And oddly enough, the idea wasn’t Loki’s, it was Heimdall’s. Thor dressed up as Freya, Loki shifting into one of Freya’s maidens (I could be mistaken here), and they set off. The giants had a party and the giant in question was like “Hey Freya, wanna see Thor’s hammer?!” Which was stupid cause as soon as Thor accepted and was given his weapon back, he proceeded to kill all the giants at the party.
I love the fact that Odin is very accurate on the game since in the myth he a trickster a god of war and wanderer that travel and love only to have more knowledge even if it means to trick people
The wedding of Freya to thrym is told a little differently. Thor, dressed as Freya.. and Loki acting to accept the dowry of Mjolnir. Thor reveals himself when mjolnir is presented. In the myths, mjolnir is just very very very heavy. It can be lifted and weilded by anyone capable of lifting it.
Mimir- "It's too bad I was fond of every giant I met" Atreus -"So that's why they destroyed the birdge to jotunheim " 18:43 Kratos suddenly - "HUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
Kratos is just sitting there listening to the stories and thinking like "I may be changed man but if any of these bastards comes across me I am not thinking twice before smashing them"
Wait. Mimir's previous master called him "goodfellow" as in Puck or Robin Goodfellow (A Midsummer Nights Dream and folklore character). So does this mean that Mimir is Puck, the fairy mischief maker? That would explain why he's Scottish as Puck comes from Celtic and English folklore and the fae master he had could be Oberon the Fairy King
No odin send thor to kill them while zeus eternally tortured all the titans i would prefer death rather than being totured for eternity in the darkest pits of tartarus
Even though this game OBVIOUSLY veers way away from most mythological depictions of Odin to make him a big bad villain it deserves some credit for depicting him as an archetypical wizard and wise-man instead of dumb muscle like he was often shown. Gandalf from Lord of the Rings draws heavily from depictions of Odin.
According to the lore book, Odin has just been spying on Kratos and Atreus since their return from Jotunheim, instead of immediately sending Thor to kill them. And we know from the lost pages that Odin already knew about Kratos and Atreus, even if he didn't know Kratos was in fact the Ghost of Sparta and not a giant. And Mimir tells us that Ragnarok is happening centuries earlier than anyone predicted. "Even if Odin can't prevent Ragnarok, he hopes to learn enough details to influence the outcome." "A battle fought on his timetable is one he better stands to win." Given what we already know about him, did Odin deliberately send Baldur to his death, knowing it would start Ragnarok early?
Very interesting. I assumed it was simply because kratos is an element of chaos, something the prophecies could not predict. Odin somehow manipulating that chaos to his benefit is a really intriguing thought.
@@AngelMartinez-hv6fj You make a very interesting point. After all, Kratos is carrying the Blades of Chaos, not the Blades of Exile. Maybe it's just because its more poetic that they're the same blades that killed his first family, or maybe it's Santa Monica's idea of a clue. Odin would control everything if he could, but Chaos disrupts order. As much as I like the idea of Odin being this sadistic schemer, there's always the possibility that he's really just pissing his pants in Asgard right now. Go ahead, flip that coin.
I think in the irl lore when baldur was born freya made everything in existence promise to never harm him, except mistletoe. Freya believed mistletoe was too young to swear an oath so that's how that came about and why he's vulnerable to mistletoe.
Apparently, the story notes show that the idea of Atreus and Kratos being Loki and Farbauti came about fairly late in development. Atreus being key to bringing about Ragnarok, and Kratos being Farbauti (which literally means "cruel striker") lined up so perfectly that Cory Barlog just swallowed it right up. The game is great at honoring the source literature while also subverting it, so its really exciting to look ahead and wonder how the story will play out once the more dramatic lore elements (Loki and Odin becoming blood brothers, "Tyr" losing his hand to Fenrir, etc) will be depicted.
I just love that when Memir tells him that he cant be unbound from the tree, that not even Mjulnir can break it, Atreus immediately tries to start sawing through.

How ironic, Odin having a endless hunger for knowledge and yet his death is by being devoured.
The cruelest ironies are based around the notion of "doing unto others before they do unto you".

That's the cool thing about myths. There are so many different versions that there isn't really a wrong myth.

Mimir is just such a good addition for the game. I really like hearing all of his stories and explanations.

Kratos, annoyed by Odin's attempt to whitewash himself, he threatens him: "Stop trying to deceive us, we know what you truly want."

I don't think Odin would be so "welcoming" to people he wants to capture. Then again, this just could be a plan for him to deceive them.

@@sarwatarannya8786 sounds like an interesting idea that gives a sense of compromise that the cast are indeed flawed and complex individuals.

So, the actual myth, as told by one of the two books (poetic Edda and the other I can’t remember).
The giants had a party and the giant in question was like “Hey Freya, wanna see Thor’s hammer?!”
Which was stupid cause as soon as Thor accepted and was given his weapon back, he proceeded to kill all the giants at the party.
Are we dodging the fact that Mimir fed Odin shrooms

Given what we already know about him, did Odin deliberately send Baldur to his death, knowing it would start Ragnarok early?
