- Today, Architectural Digest travels to the wooded canyons of Los Angeles to tour Stebel House. Built in 1961 by Harry Gesner, one of Southern California’s most prolific architects, it comprises three A-frame structures that combine to create an enchanting triangular form that looks straight out of a storybook. Surrounded by woodland, it is hard to believe this charming design is just a stone's throw from the city's hustle and bustle.

Awesome. His son did a great tour of the Malibu beach house his dad built too. It's great to see a son so proud of his dad and tell us with a real storytellers passion.
Sorry, but I disagree about the "speechifying" - some homes simply speak for themselves
I mean he has a vested interest
@@toodlesoops7761turn down the volume..
@@toodlesoops7761 thats the great thing about art - it's in the eye of the beholder. I also loved the narration
Mad respect for someone who will go and spend a week on site in a tent to truly understand what the land is calling for❤
As an architecture student, seeing what is possible in this realm is what keeps me going when school gets tough. This house is considerate of both of the artists who commissioned it as well as doubling as the story of Harry Gesner's life inspirations and pulling that off is nothing short of amazing.
When I find a location for my mansion I’ll come back to your comment to offer you a job
@@Thatonepersonthatsaid That is so kind of you to say. I am up for the job!!!
@@foxwilliamulder not trying to be rude but is building luxurious houses for rich peoole your main goal as an architect?
Is it a house? Oma !
Would love to see more students film their journey and or document it more. Im inspired by the profession and I am curious about the studying journey of an architect 🤍✨ Wish you the best in this journey 💛
So well done and narrated beautifully by his son paying homage to his father
“They didn’t have much money.” 😂
But seriously, my favorite part is the seemingly endless understanding of his father’s visions and goals.
Love this house. But also love hearing him talk about his Father. You can tell he loves his Dad and continued his passion.
Now THAT is a house I would love to live in.
This genuinely might be my favorite house I’ve ever seen ever
The amount of love and consideration in this design is astounding, and should be taught to architectural students and interior designers.
How magical to listen to Zen as he shares his father Harry’s talent. Growing up in Pukerua bay in New Zealand I first fell in love with A frame houses. They dotted the hill above the beach like little location markers of joy. How lucky we all are to have Harry Gesner’s vision still enjoyed and admired today.
He really lives up to his name.
What an artist Harry Gesner was! You can see all the different influences Zen names, plus some Mondrian and Modern Art. Harry combined these things to make something new and totally unique.
Love the house, but I was mesmerized more by him discussing his father. The life story woven into the house story, if you will. I lost my Dad 42 years ago last week, so hearing this makes me think of the times he and I had together. I was only 14 when he passed away, but I feel like he taught me so many life lessons in that short span of time.
I love that in the 60’s this was a house built for people that didn’t have a lot of money. Now this house would cost $1,200,000 to build.
1.2M?
Maybe in Kentucky.
Maybe in the Midwest or the South-not out West.
3-5M in LA probably
“Didn’t have a lot of money” is probably relative. Didn’t have as much money as most of his clients but probably more than the average person. But just guessing
@@michaelh8854 more like 8.5-12M.
How fitting that Zen has such a chilled and relaxing voice.
I loved how the architect spent time studying the property, sun rising, vantage points, etc before breaking ground. So many new homes are simply placed at a 90 to the road with little to no regard for the space it occupies.
It is absolutely stunning and unique. It is so well preserved. It's touching just how proud his son is ❤
Watching this gave me so much joy. How inspiring! I could watch footage of Gesner homes, presented by his son, all day long.
Thanks for showing us this beautiful house. It was so moving to see and hear the host's love and understanding of his father coming through in every scene. It's plain to see that they had a special connection and he can feel his father's spirit in every corner of the house.
🌳I stumbled upon a derelict A-frame surrounded by blackjack oaks overlooking a lake in a small town in Georgia. I now live in that A Frame, it is modest, not a fancy architect design. But the experience of living in this unique style is extraordinary: the lift of the ceiling and how nature is so huge through the windows reaches into your soul. I feel I can touch the trees and the sky and the lake. Loved this video✨️
You are so lucky to get to live and experience such an architectural marvel everyday
I love most of the houses featured here on AD but I'd say this is by far that catches my soul. A house that's not screaming luxury but serenity and connection with nature & beyond.
It’s a timeless design, that sunken living room that lets the outside in…. it’s majestic
That house is art
That house is a true nightmare to my eyes.
without isolation lol
I felt joy towards Harry in getting that opportunity to make his dreams become reality. I used to sketch houses, buildings, trees, etc...when I was young. My Mom even kept some. I loved and still love camping. I try to think of privacy, sun patterns, and vantage points for window placements. I still dream of designing something that gets built.
kinda reminds me of a wooden cabbins we have here in finland. and the nature around it makes it feel so homey. as a photographer myself i do a lot architectural pictures, its my passion, this house is a piece of art
The window framing looks like a Mondrian painting. Just stunning!
Goodness! He and dad both could be Hollywood heartthrobs! Oh, I like the house too ;o)
Indeed.
For real! Lol, oh yeah-the houses are amazing too! 😂😜
He’s an actor ,look him up.
easily one of the most beautiful living rooms ive seen in a while
It is a precious iconic US mid century example. And so well preserved. Thanks for showing it.
This house is amazing and beautiful. The thoughtfulness in every details is breathtaking!
This design is really ahead of its time.
I want my son to be as proud of me as this guy is of his dad...
The Gesner legacy is well attended!
Wow! This house is amazing!! Thank you for sharing.
the best architects love nature and light. Adult only decks are cool.
That's pure art. So beautiful.
This is a masterpiece.
Love it. That living room is really special, with the treetop views, sunken seating, and rock garden and plantings matching what's immediately outside, giving you that indoor/outdoor living feeling.
Many architects do not take into consideration what your father did, to incorporate light and sound is refreshing. I’ve seen so many designs that I’ve been in where the acoustics are terrible and sound systems, media playback, both visual, and audio or not taken into consideration, this is part of our lives. Don’t even get me started on kitchens design by people who don’t cook😢
He looks just like his Dad.
He likes his Dad, too.
@@lkdjlkdj Yes. That always bodes well for the son. He wasn’t wearing a Raiders jersey.
People love hearing that
I agree! It’s an uncanny resemblance.
They’re both hot! 😅
I’m beyond words with this project. Astonishing space(s).
that drawing itself has life, that's the reason this Spot is spiritually enlightened, it's such soothing sensation...
Magnificent❤
This house has reignited my love for Aframe house.
A sublime communion with nature, art and living. A truly stunning house.
Очень интересные идеи.. И даже огородик есть) Благодарю🙏
What a beautiful house. I really admire the craftmanship, design process, and all the details. Thank you for walking us through it.
Wow! This house is amazing. Such beauty so much a part of it's surrounding nature
What a gorgeous tribute to your dad! Honestly I think this is one of the best narrated videos and tours on this channel. Love love! Xx
This is the most beautiful house I've ever seen
Magnificent piece of art!!!!
Gorgeous place in a gorgeous setting. This is one of the few impeccably *designed* modernist houses that feel to me like places human beings could actually inhabit and enjoy living their (messy, non-designer) lives in. Gesner was evidently not a control freak, and that shines through his building. That upper deck without railings still gives me a little vertigo, though...
50's houses are the best for me, so praticle, design and easy to live in ❤
Love mid-century modern organic architecture. It is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs. Love this!
This is nothing like FLW IMO
I really enjoyed this house, and the story behind it and all involved!
A perfect habitat for me ❤
This is a beautiful house and as much as I appreciate the history, it feels like the video is more about the architect than the house.
nice and cozy, striking facade. I love it.
Omg!!! I would never leave!!!!!
Simply spectacular
I have never been more jealous
Breathtaking!!!
Very impressive and emotional 🏕
😍 One of my all time favorite homes. So lovingly crafted, and shared. Thank you Zen, owners, & AD! 🙏
yes i agree people really don't need a whole lot of house space but it certainly helps when you are surrounded by beautiful nature on a multi million dollar private lot in mandeville canyon.
Incredible space
When discussing design, I think affordable aesthetics should not be ignored. There is a recent project in the Xair community that tries to solve this problem, which is very interesting! Have you heard of it?
This is the most thoughtfully designed beautiful house I’ve ever seen
It’s gorgeous! I always loved a frames
The son and the father are spitting images of each other.
I've had some decentwins already. A friend of mine hit big last week, made me wish I'd started earlier
I’ve seen this house in my dreams - just simply surreal - beauty and nature infused
Beautiful.
beautiful design!
AWESOME 😍
너무나도 멋지고 자연과 더불어 훌륭한 집이네요~~~
Wonderful job!
looks awesome, i like the roofs and the way it connects to the ground
My brother loves the poker rooms. Says the competition is decent, and the interface makes it easy to play
The views are amazing
So much of the Wave House in this place.
This is a very meticulously calculated house❤❤...it's literally perfect in every shape and form!😮
besides the amazing house, this was so well presented!
That house is magical
Very cool to see a family member do these. He did a great job too. The house was stunning
Fantastic!!!!
We don't have people like this guy's father anymore...... what an true artist.....
We do lots of them
I've now seen my most favorite homes, stunning!!!!!!!!
It has such a glow about it! He is an outstanding Artist
Love the shoes 👞
amazing house, but i would have liked to see a complete tour
now THAT is a HOUSE! ❤
Brilliant in many ways. Well filmed as well.
Wasn't expecting AD to get me emotional
I cried!!!!
What a masterpiece♥️
I enjoyed this.Thanks.
Absolutely stunning! Architectural artwork. Beautiful!
What a great storyteller his son is- I loved this!❤
This house is amazing. What a beautiful original concept.
I'm mostly into roulette; the vibe feels just like a real casino. Got any favorites when it comes to table games
That upper deck is perfect to walk off of in the middle of the night, post eyes wide shut party
Looks like a gorgeous giant sail to me. But I love those gigantic beams and connector plates and bolts! So cool.😎
Lovely in every way. Beautifully told. Thank you for sharing great art and unique architecture.
