Transformer CNC cabin by a lake becomes father-son work dialogue

- Daniel Yudchitz and his father, Bill, are both architects who took their love of craft, cabins, and Swiss precision in architecture (e.g. Peter Zumthor) and created a CNC-cut cabin crafted to a fraction of an inch.
The home is built with interlocking structural panels and can be disassembled. In fact, the father/son team built most of it in their parking lot, moved it, and completed the build on the grounds of a state fair before moving it once again to its final resting place on their property on Lake Superior (in far north Wisconsin near Bayfield).
The furniture was built to interlock and morph from table and benches into a disabled-accessible bed.

Love this minimalist structure. Their use of the height of the space is very wise. The baltic birch plywood as both a surface and structural element is pretty cool too. The chair/bench design is my favorite. Thanks for sharing these inspirational stories. Your kids are sure getting to expand their world view. I love that you bring them along for these adventures.
So much thinking and engineering genius came into this place. I love how precise yet simple it looks from outsiders. I enjoyed watching the story.

beautiful functional cabin. it's not overdone with "transforming" bits that will never be used, and the spacing is very well thought out.
Very nice modern cabin in the woods. Love the well thought out furnishings. Nice to see a father/son architectural team experimenting and enjoying this lovely space and also sharing with family and friends.
I have definitely seen this cabin in pictures hundreds of times. It is great to here the owners/builders talk about this iconic house.

I've watched a LOT of tiny house videos, and this has to be the most ingenious design I've ever seen!
PS - We live in a house 4X bigger than this cabin, and we only have 1 sink (period, just one kitchen sink, no sink in bathroom), and (a-HEM) we live here. Full time.

Man is it ever cold up there. I grew up in northern Michigan but I don't know if I could take it anymore. I'm glad to see these people are more hardy than I am and that they have built something very nice

As a carpenter myself, i can really appreciate design and workmanship. There must be 1000 man hours here along with 10x the expense of a conventional build, but the imagination of design comes from a true artist. Bravo

Eduardo Rodriguezarias They're definitely 'of this world'. They're a standard design called alternating tread stairs. Very common in boat building and in lofts. They should really have used thicker ply for these, they flex quite badly when the son walks up them.

I would love to live in this type of homes
It's modern in a lot of ways, but rustic in many ways as well. Very smart designs, cool concepts, and those sliding doors are perfect! It would be interesting to spend a week in winter. Only thing I miss is some sort of fireplace.

I’m from the US but don’t know much about Wisconsin. I love how matter of fact these guys are, how inventive, how obviously they appreciate nature, design, art, and family. I don’t know if everyone is like that up in WI, or just these guys, but definitely very cool!

Talking about the fact that there is no double sink or has hard wood for seating is quite funny... Have people forgotten about tiny ?... and that imagination is the only limit ? Cushions and bassins exist !!! That house is truly beautiful, intelligent and beautiful !!!
