German law student tried woodworking, became master designer

- In the tiny Bavarian town of Aschau im Chiemgau, Nils Holger Moormann and his 35 employees create modern furniture in a converted stable under the shadow of a 12th-century castle. All designs are produced within 40 kilometers of their rural headquarters, or as avid cyclist, Moormann explains, “within a two-hour bike ride”.
Moorman initially studied law - encouraged by his father- but when began exploring furniture design and found his passion, and early success. The furniture are contemporary classics, but his creative world takes place inside the remains of past centuries.
Moorman’s complex of creativity includes the huge stable turned workshop where they prototype, and even test, the designs. There’s the barn that is now his home and most recently, he converted another rundown structure into a guesthouse where not only are the furnishings minimal, but guests are encouraged to disconnect with the Internet-free policy.

Nils Holger Moormann is a little bit of a legend in the German design community. He won once a legal fight with IKEA when they copied his stuff.

@@ricoshred Former law student (without a degree) against Ikea's law firm with x amount of IP law experience. Unfortunately Ikea has the advantage here.
Design IP is very difficult to protect, and claim too since most ideas aren't unique in themselves.

The building is magnificant. Nils is a good steward of his property. He is a true preservationist. His attention to preserving the origional character of the building is spot on. His attention to detail and simplicity has me staying up all night sketching ideas flowing from my mind. Thanks for bringing my attention to this incredible designer. Your videos are truly a source of energy for me.

This guy is an effective marketing machine. I find his furniture unremarkable, but the vibe the company gives off sure is nice (including the "I like old and broken stuff").
The one thing that doesn't come off as rattly and scrappy is the table.
Something I absolutely *love* is his mixing in of references to german words. He doesn't even attempt to translate them mostly, which must come off as weird to non-germans.
Almost all of the stuff gives me a feeling of "I could do that" and that's pretty cool.
I'm compelled to watch this again and again. This man is one of the great citizens of the World.
A true German and totally my kind of German. Not like the ones sometimes you come across in Majorca. I'm at awe by this man's engineering ideas applied to woodworking which is my passion. I really like when he said he likes 'small things', the attention to detail is phenomenal and his pieces are beautiful and practical. Gosh you can't even imagine how much I've enjoyed watching this video. Thank goodness he didn't study law......
It looks so great and beautiful! I have nothing to add. Just feeling a bit sad that in my country it's impossible to find something like this. I am really grateful that I live in this beautiful world, where people feel out and understand the world like me, I am not alone who hate plastic and bad quality and at the same time love wood. Thanks for your work.

Interesting how the usage of words can change over time or even vary among people in different locales. For instance, this man has many admirable qualities and abilities but being a 'master woodworker' is definitely not a term that I would personally use in describing him.

invention 's are wonderfully designed so unique .
He reminds me of my German Roots. My Grandmother was German. MR. Moormann reminds me of my father who was an Airinotical Engineer. Father was always designing something, then building it.
He designed jewelry and made each piece once . He won awards for his Airinotical designs . He worked for the government on a military base.

This gentleman is a perfect example why i like to work with Germans, no compromise, only trying to do the right thing, while maintaining fun.

Firstly Bavaria is looking beautiful. He has a beautiful home. Such ideas, the pursuit of perfection and minimalism, it reminds me of the golden age of Danish furniture danish and minimalism. (Of course these 'old ideas' of minimalist perfection no longer survive today in Danish design), I am happy to see this gentleman pursuing the same ideas. It reminds me of the height of human capabilities when one pursues perfection and attention to detail. A master at work :) Greetings from a New Zealander living in Poland. They almost made it too perfect, new designers are struggling, but simplistic design is still held in high regards today though :)
Armentum This is about the quality of engineering and materials meant to be functional and adaptive over time I think. The minimalism is secondary, perhaps to an aversion to being “out of style” one day, which is a risk if your product lasts many decades, as opposed to the almost disposable furniture from mass produced, mass market stuff made for the “want it now” and “want it new” and “want it changed” crowd with consumerism tendencies that are motivated by what is seen on mass media.

This guy is awesome! I love everything about how this designer happened upon woodworking and allowed himself to be freed of the constraints of other people's idea of a "safe and successful" career path. He forged on keeping this mentality at the forefront, thus allowing him and his team to grow and explore. Cool design ideas all around even the ines he felt were "not so clever". He's the cool distant older uncle id want to hand around and learn from😍Kudos...and Happy new year All✌😊💫

Brenda H - The ingenuity comes from genetics in the Czech Republic that used to be the Kingdom of Bohemia. Centuries ago the King of Bohemia sent word all over Europe that he wanted to pay the most creative people to immigrate to his country. He was trying to build a super race of creative people. Over the centuries people intermarried with Germans and introduced those creative genetics into their gene pool. One of the first places Hitler invaded was the country of Czechoslovakia because of their superior manufacturing industries.

The only thing I dislike is the aesthetics of his work, harsh lines and boxes depress me. On another note he’s a great engineer, with an eye for detail and subtlety. He radiates pretentious passion!
The pressed aluminum chair ($500) looks like it could be lethal. It's distinctive though. I like the more curvy $7 non-German plastic stackable chairs. One day I stumbled into one, smashed my knee into the arm of it, and it just moved out of the way. Kept out of the sun, they last for decades.
What an amazing human being. People like him give me hope and joy for humanity.

Flatpak furniture that fits together without fasteners is ingenious and something I'd like to see go more mainstream. As as old cyclist myself though, there hasn't been any design innovation as important for men, and me personally, as the split bicycle seat.
And for sitting at the computer, which is where some people today do most of their news reading, it wasn't a chair that transformed my comfort and experience, but a BulbHead (brand name) "Egg Sitter" cushion, a flexible (made of silicone) honeycombed chair cushion I use on a regular wood library chair that for me provides support and promotes a kind a natural shifting of movement, which with my bony frame, is a lot more comfortable than shifting in a hard chair to prevent back lock-up. I got mine on Ebay for $22, but they are $33 at Walmart. They may not work for heavy or large people, because it is just not big enough. And it depends on what kind of chair you put it on, how it feels.
Nils is my favourite designer. I can definitely say that his influence on me has been immense.
I love his attitude. Eccentric and jovial.
I really hope Kirsten kids know how lucky they are. These kids get to go to so many cool places.
I liked the wheel chair. He is so right about standing up at meetings, most meetings should be done without chairs, in fact I advocated we have our meetings outside in the hot sun. We were also near an airport so planes flying over would make people shut up and give others a chance to speak. .

@@rerikm you sound like some of our coworkers. You waste our time and distract from the true purpose of our business. You go to meetings and put on a play and dominate the discussions and take them off topic and have nothing constructive to contribute. You keep other more timid coworkers from contributing and you think the world revolves around you. if the mids of people are wandering in meetings it is because they were not given an agenda beforehand and told what they would be contributing. If people have a ton of work and have to attend a meeting in which they have not a clue why they are there and half the people attending are just putting on a dog and pony show a dominatrix will not help.
Plus, shorten the meeting time.😉😁

Possibly one of the most inspiring videos I've seen, on any channel. What a mind this gentleman has. I like too, that he was not a designer before and I'm positive that played to his advantage, as he had no rules and regulations through previous teaching.
