literally named after zueses weapon of choice the lightning even surpassed its cousin the svt cobra at one point. cementing its place in history as one of the best trucks of all time
I’ve had my 04 lightning for 2 years it’s been my daily and I constantly beat on it not a single problem with it most reliable vehicle I have ever owned
I got a 04 lightning,. Daily it.. Drive it hard.. Still a beast on the street.. It take something strong to beat me... So easy to drive... Love mine.. Ill never sell..

Pure America! Wish Ford kept making these up until the raptor years. I think I need to start saving my money, these things are amazing.
Ford needs to bring back the Lightning from the dead with a 5.2 V8 from the Shelby GT350 with a manual transmission as an option. The Ford Lightning is for street purposes and the Ford Raptor is for off-road purposes. We need trucks for both purposes.
With the aftermarket world, I can build you a new F150 "Lightning" using a 5.0l coyote and your forced induction of choice. Would probably be cheaper than Ford would sell it for too.
The sell wasn't great. That's why Ford discontinued production. I don't know what's wrong with people. It is a nice truck, but Ford did cheaped out on a few things with it. The Lightning belongs to people that are mechanically inclined. Not for the general sheepy public or immature & incompetent drivers. It would be destroyed to sh*t or end up ruin by most of the common greasy airtool mechanics at your local shops.

I feel like this guy doesn't know much about these trucks, just what he reads online, Everthing he is saying is just Generalized and common issues with any 15 - 19 year old truck.
I owned my white 2002 Lightning since it was new. Still have it. It was my daily driver until I retired about 7 years ago. Only has 116K. At around 90K, I had Manny had HPP Performance change out some parts without doing any engine teardown, plus a few tricks with an SCT programmer. The beast is now putting out 430HP to the rear wheels on the dyno! That was a nice upgrade from the 380HP to the flywheel coming out of the factory. It held it's own when it was strictly stock, but with the upgrades, this truck regularly blows away GT Mustangs, and yes, Viper V10's. Outside of the Cervini twin snorkel ram air hood, the truck looks stock. Only after 18 years did I just start to get some throttle body DTC's, which is a relatively easy fix. Other than that, no issues ever. The truck is immaculate, and I have had offers to sell, but this truck stays with me to the grave. Best truck Ford came out with before the Raptor.

Wrong on the broken spark plugs. That is a zero issue on 99-04 Lightnings. The broken spark plugs issues were on the 2004 & up 3v 5.4, Due to porcelian spark plugs that would break.

Jajaja... that is NOT a issue... if you know do the job... i make that job in 8 pick-up... 2 of them Lighting and i never wroke 1 spark-plug... jajaja...
Not going to have a problem with the Lightning 2 valves Trition. Normal looking spark plugs. Except 99-01 a bit shorter thread length than 02-04 that's all. Mine are gapped at .042 at 13 ft/lbs.

The 5.4 2v was known for ejecting the plugs, the 3v was the engine that broke the plugs. The other issues plagued all the mod motors.
Ford fixed the problem with plugs blowing out in the Triton in 2003. They added more threads to the cylinder head. This seemed to help the problem. Otherwise, yea for some reason of all the 97-02 5.4s, #3 plug on the passenger side loves to blow out lol. I've had to repair quite a few.

I’m in Devon, the first time I drove it home it felt very, very big but I think that was down to it being LHD. It was incredibly quick for a big truck but you take the piss at your peril as she can bite - or be utter pussycats to drive.
Pre 2003 had some issues with plug threads in the heads - they’re a bastard to change but not impossible.
Standard power was enough for me but the sky’s the limit - I got 16 to the gallon, servicing was nothing other than oil changes.
My heart sank one day when I had an engine warning light flash up. Local garage stuck a laptop on it and it came up with a faulty oil pressure switch.
It was the same as a Ford Focus so was £18.00...!
Hankook made tyres the same size as original and were way better than the rock hard Goodyear’s that are standard fit.

Bought my 02 Lightning brand new still own her till this day not one of the problems you mentioned and will never sell her.

Look up 2004 f150 heritage. They sold the old body style as a heritage edition and released the new body style in the same year. Also the 2v 5.4 didn't have issues with the spark plugs getting stuck and breaking. That's the 3v.
Henry Klassen also the 10th gen body style was sold all the way up till 2010 in mexico
The 2 valve had the problem of spitting the plugs out.

I love my 01 5.4 lariat F-150 supercrew! I have experienced coil failure before and the infamous leaky rear window but other than that the 10th generation F-150 is a very good and reliable truck!

My buddy owened a Ford lighting it was white. I like the top mounted supercharger. Lots of high speeds in his truck but pigs didn't stand a chance.👍🏼🇨🇦🚬🍺

I owned a 95 red and then a 2001 white. No problems to report with my 2001. The 95 Firestone firehawks were too soft and wore out quickly. Otherwise both solid for what they were.
He’s right on a few things but wrong on about 90 of everything else. 5.43v plugs broke off but 99-02 lightnings didn’t have enough thread count on the spark plugs and a lot of them shot the plugs. And the 99-00 had Leakey intercoolers that was about it for the major headaches. Never had any power steering issue or anything else

Dude... the spark plugs don’t break on Lightning 2 valve 5.4... thats the 3valve 5.4. I’ve owned my 01 since new & have had zero of these issues you’ve mentioned, 171,000 miles

Another problem with the Ford Lightning is it's infamous moderate overlap crash test tested by the IIHS. This applies to all 97-03 and 2004 Heritage models.

I have to disagree with the spark plugs breaking.What my mechanic told me about it was you have to decarbonize the engine and sd park plugs with a injection and carbon cleaner that you pour into the gas tank.Also the oil changes and maintenance is key to keeping these trucks running a long time.I got 5.4 3v 06 I've had it 6 years it's a crew cab.And after 200k it still runs strong

your reviews of this performance truck also goes for every other f150 & Expedition with the same motor; not just the svt f150 LIGHTNING (It's also Fair to mention: there's a lot of Nay sayers out there who might treat this truck the way it was designed; instead of keeping it a less driven classic like many people have done. so: I give your review 1 1/2 stars.
3v break! Not 2v
The spark plug problem you mentioned is just the 3 valve tritons. The 2 valves had super short threads so the spark plugs would blow out of the cylinder. Ask me how I know. 🤣
I daily drive one of these for years. The 10th generation F-150 is a bullet proof platform. Torque spark plugs to spec and you’ll have 0 issues.
Get Motorcraft coils and you’ll have no problems. These motors can EASILY go 400k miles if maintained properly.
But keep spreading that they’re bad trucks so the prices don’t sky rocket 🤣🤣
Not to mention that it has so much compression and not enough spark plug thread that it will shoot the spark plugs out of the head.
Yeah earlier models had 4 thread heads while the 03-04 got 8 thread upgraded heads. But if torqued properly it won't shoot a spark plug even on the 4 thread heads.
I used to eat these with a 99 Dodge Dakota RT and I did not have a supercharger. It took very little to get these trucks fast enough to where nobody could touch them though. I put a shit ton of money into my Dakota Rt to make it just a bit faster than a Lightning but all they had to do was a pulley swap and tune and I was toast.

Sorry you are wrong about the 1999 f 150 i have one and it's the same as the lighting but no skirts and no blower.it is a sidestep.
So based on all the comments I’m seeing, the issues he took up are relevant to the 3v 5.4L, not this 2v
Beware some 2nd Gen SVT TrIton 5.4L's are known spark plug spitters-as I understand the problem(too few threads in cylinder head) was not fixed by Ford on Lightnings until 2003 1/2 and on through to 2004 models(last year made).Ford refuses to do a recall and fix the problem.Potential fire hazard.Carry a fire extinguisher.Learn how to disconnect injector and COP if it happens and you have to keep driving.PS I bought one in 2021 and love it!(Except for this problem and the supercharger intercooler plugging up with oil)-Installed a catch can as recommended.

Did you do a survey of 2nd generation Lightning owners concerning the problems you listed? I have a 1999 SVT Lightning that's slightly modded, and still running strong. I HAVE NOT had any of the problems you've named. Do you even own a 2nd generation Lightning? My only complaint is with the crappy factory paint job. BTW, my Lightning has a little more than 208,000 miles now
Spark plug issue is false. That is the 3v Triton engines. This truck has the 4v

No sir im a ford man the broken spark plug issue was the 5.4 3v not the 5.4 2v that the lighting and the valve cover never that was also the 5.4 3v amd the manifolds leaked air on the 5.4 3v after 250,000 miles
The 99-02 Lightning heads have too little threads, the threads tend to strip. Mid 02+ had 8 thread heads that relieved this issue.
Some misinformation in this video you could get a 2004 heritage f150 which is still the 97-03 body style
This guy obviously didn't do much fact checking on the so called problems he listed. No Lightning i've ever heard of had any gasket problems from the factory. Only leaking issue was an intercooler leak that was part of a recall on the 99/00 trucks. The coil failure, weak alternators, metal shavings, and EGR issues are all lies. There was a plug issue though, but not with the plugs breaking, that was on the 3 valve engines. The problem the plugs had was blowing out from the plug boss only being threaded half way, when the plug would eject it would usually destroy the coil in the process. Also the idea that Ford only built the 10gen body style for Lightnings in 04 is also a lie, they ran the entire F150 line in the 10th gen body style for 04.

My solution to the breaking of the spark plugs is to remove them while the engine is hot. It's much easier than when its cooler down

My 99 has had none of these issues at 187,000 miles daily driver. Dont leak a drop of oil. Everytime I drive it I ring the nuts off and it wants more.

all the problems your listing are wrong. my dad had a L (it’s passed down to me) and he had NO problem of what you just listed. and it’s a 99. i remember growing up with this truck and it has no single problem. 17 years growing up with this baby and there’s still no signs of any of those problems.

Actually, here in WV, the birds fly backwards in the left lane 25 MPH below the speed limit with their turn signal on, usually on I-77 North just past Pocatalico. Absolutely infuriating in the evening commute home.
SRT10 is slightly quicker, but dodge didn't do anything groundbreaking or historical with that truck. Taking a viper engine and dropping it in a full size pickup just to beat a lightning is nothing to get excited about lol. Piss ugly and only around for 3 years too. The GMC Syclone is quicker than the ram and the lightning too.

The WS6 wasn’t faster than a base C5, if anything they were pretty much identical in thr quarter... but Vette would pull at 100+
3-valves had their sparkplugs break in the head. 2-valves just blew their sparkplugs out of their sockets.
The lightning was slower than the SRT Ram. 0-60 and top speed. First thing you say and it's wrong
I've owned a 2000 L for over 9yrs now and most of this information is incorrect. Never seen or heard of an L with a broken plug. And the only leak in 140k was from the rear diff seal...

Buy an 03-04 Lightning and avoid most of the problems this guy talks about. They lined a lot of stuff out by then and the 03-04 gets 8 thread spark plug holes.

No cam phasers on these engines. That was the later 3V 5.4.
My 2004 Lightning, the VIN lists it as a Heritage Edition, not a Lightning.
They carried 2003 body style into 2004 for the Lightning. Remember, the 2004 F-150 was a completely new and different body style from the 2nd generation Lightnings, hence the 2004 Lightning being listed as a "heritage" f-150 for that model yr.
