ICF Mountain Homestead: Raising the Ridge Beam

  • The most dangerous part of the build so far is rigging, raising and setting the LVL ridge beam in place... without a crane. The crew built custom scaffolding to help get the 44' long beam in place while climbing around over four stories above the ground. And then the wind started blowing.

No criticism from me! They definitely know what they are doing and confident in their actions. It's my own fear of heights that made me nervous! I am half blind which affects my depth perception and eye hand coordination (think right handed, left eyesight).....I am in awe of what they can do so high up!
      Kudos to the crew!

The leading causes of private sector worker deaths in the construction industry are falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution.
Any concern for the safety of this workers is legitimate.
But if you are not concern for the safety of the workers, think about protecting your future.
When there is an accident in a construction site not only it can destroy the life of the worker but also the future of the owner and the owner's family. I'm speaking from my own experience.

@@archliud all fine and dandy until you have to pay out of your pocket...if you want to use a crane and fall protection go ahead,....just don`t try and mandate we all do......or worse yet.....deem us unsafe because you choose to be overly safe.
PS, ……..my buddie died wearing osha fall protection.

@@shawncockrell6007 Understood. But there is always a right time and a wrong time to do stuff. Tower climbers get killed still wearing their fall protection. But they also survive a lot of the times wearing it.

One thing I know, working guys are unbelievably strong compared to pretty boys with gym muscles. When you see them running up a ladder with a pack of shingles on their shoulder that the average guy couldn’t even pick up you really know what strong means.

WOW! GREAT crew. I have 4 brothers and like my Dad, they all worked construction. My father was a plumber/pipefitter/welder, carpenter. & during WW2 he helped bore the holes for cannons, and later, worked for the AEC in the Arco desert. 1 plumber/ pipefitter, 1 carpenter/machinist 1 electrician, 1 brother does almost everything, and for the last 40 years has run his own business specializing in mobile refrigeration. Give tradesmen their due respect. most men can read a book, but not so many can set a ridge beam or fix your car's carburetor, or re-wire your house.
