MOVING a 450 LB. Ridge Beam by HAND // Couple Builds Own House - Ep. 45

  • We are preparing to raise our first ridge beam that will run from our back log wall to our middle column. This means we need to complete our back log wall of our log cabin kit home. Then we need to make sure the middle column and the back log wall are the same height so the ridge beam will be level. This means that Ryan has to climb to some major heights to cut down the column.
    Lastly, we have to move the ridge beam into our log cabin and get it up to our loft floor. This is NO easy feat because the ridge beam is around 450 lbs. We have to get creative on how to move this ridge beam into the house site without any equipment.
    And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on TH-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
    Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
    In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
    Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

      It’s been scary but also one of the most monumental achievements.

    Sarah and Ryan considering all the speed humps being put in your way you are still powering along! The cabin is looking good! So much work done! Progress is progress no matter the speed! As long as you keep going forward that’s all that matters! One step one nail one beam at a time!! Awesome guys!! I admire you both!

      Throughout this process we were all feeling pretty confident. Getting the beam into the house by hand was probably the hardest part of the whole thing.

    disassemble the support arm of the lift , place the lift in the middle weer the team sound be and reassemble the support arm on the lift so that you het the team high enough with the lift

    Man if you could get that lift up there🤞😬here's hoping🙏✌

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Getting the lift up there is key, otherwise hiring a crane I think is the next option. We tried building a ramp to get it up there but it was just too heavy.

    you only needed to measure off the floor to cut the beam post

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sub floor was in the way. We wanted to triple check things do the string line and laser were redundant sanity checks.

  • @jseif5844
    @jseif5844 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would just get everything set up and bring a crane in.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We thought about it. The cost would have been more and we would be less involved in the project. It was our next option though if we couldn’t figure it out with the lifts.

    Is this going to be a shed or a house, so thin these walls!

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid

      There will be 2 1/4” of solid foam insulation against the inside wall.

    Courious what is the R factor on those log walls. Are you insulating the outside or Inside ?

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on the log walls but we are adding 1.5” of foam board to the interior walls.

  • @TheStoneWhisperer
    @TheStoneWhisperer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ryan sawing off the top of that beam was honestly the sketchiest crap I've seen you guys do so far. There must be a better way. I wonder why it couldn't have been cut prior to erecting it? Was it just not possible to get an accurate dimension?
