    I used to have a GS1000G for better part of a decade around 20 years ago. I was born almost exactly the same time it came out the factory. We were best friends for tons and tons of kilometers. Then it started to act up on me, going all types of broken more and more often, so I sold it. I learned about a year later, it had busted the shaft on the hands the new owner. I think it knew it was about to die, and told me to let it go. Thanks for reviving this one. It means a lot to me.

    I got a stack of chain drive starter motors and if you are still in need I'm sure I can strip one down and send a pair of, got some other bits and bobs just call it.
    Btw that ceiling light ain't doing you no favours, makes you look like an angel.😇

      That very generous mate. It seems to be holding up, having said that it hasn’t been bounced down the road for long enough to tell. Hang on to them mate, if it fails in the future I will be able to source one. There seems to be a few about. Cheers, Andy

    I re-shimmed the valves on my bike recently and it gave me an extra 20 psi on the compression test on each cylinder, all of my clearances where out of spec but there was still clearance just not enough! according to the manufactures specifications, you can also find out what compression readings you should be getting by finding out the atmospheric pressure of your location and then multiplying that number by the compression stroke of the Gs1000 which i believe is 9.2:1 so for example if you're at sea level the atmospheric pressure is 14.70 pounds per square inch, multiply 14.70 by the compression stroke ratio (9.2:1 in this case) it'll equal 135psi and that'll be an ok compression reading for the Gs if it's situated at around sea level

    Two things I would recommend: 1 remote ignition excitor switch for compression testing when you can't use the handle bar electrics 2 USB or Bluetooth lighted endoscope which are super cheap now for a pretty skookum jammer.

      I actually had one in my dirty dick beaters, but put it back on the shelf and walked away. I figured I had better things to spend my hard earned doll hairs on but I have lamented that decision for some time now, I may pick one up again and see if I can live with it. Thanks mate.

    Love your calm & methodical approach to the project, & although the, currently, limited budget is making it awkward, it also shows what’s possible with the limited budget that so many of us have. Anyone can just replace the lot, & have it running tomorrow!!

    Nice project Andy! Greetings from Norway here. Doing a rebuild of the same bike here, -81 mod 1000G. Also had that same chargingissue when I bought the bike 5 months ago. New regulator(high quality), and battery sorted that out. Hope you dont have the statormeltdown, that might cost you :( My bike is now in pieces, frame is sent away to sodablast and paint. Started with the engine today. Have problems with the valveclearence. But those shims will be overlooked after I ve changed all the gaskets down to the cylinderhead. Have a bucketload of small issues that I have planned for the bike, hoping that your videos can help some. Will make a tribute to Bills bikeproject by paypal, just something small but everything counts. Making a scrambler and have a LOT of original parts lying around....sadly the postal would kill the value of the parts. Keep it up!

    this just what I need ripping into an 81 xj650 in a f.in cold shed - you are calm and methodical which is teaching me a lot. I haven`t connected the battery yet but am considering junking the old glass fuses for the spade type, maybe source a fuse block from the car breakers?

    Andy, I have the same bike. New coils,new spark plugs,new wires,freshly rebuilt and tested carbs. Cylinder 4 is not firing even though I have spark,fuel. The head pipe is cold to the touch after 5 min of idling. What is going on!?!

  • @rtwolfrt
    @rtwolfrt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure how much you have had to do with old gs's, but its likely the wiring is butchered because it doesn't charge. It doesn't charge because the stator is cactus, and the stator is cactus because the regulator and rectifier were no good in the first place...
    Good luck mate.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day Rhys, yes mate I am aware of the Achilles heel charging issues, I'm planning to do a video on this shortly. It isn't unique to the GS either, in fact it is surprisingly common. In fact my 2005 955i Daytona even had a similar issue. Thanks for watching, Andy

  • @jkbshields
    @jkbshields 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would it not be good idea to disconnect battery when removing fuse block and mucking around with it? also I don't think leaving spark plug holes open to the air allowing stuff (technical term) to potentially fall into the combustion chamber(s) is a good idea; just sayin'.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes

  • @DaveWatts_ejectamenta
    @DaveWatts_ejectamenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Better to test the spark using the starter motor because it may be taking too much juice away from the coils while cranking. Shame Suzuki didn't keep the kickstart on the GS1000G.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, but it was broken at the time.

    • @DaveWatts_ejectamenta
      @DaveWatts_ejectamenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could I just ask a question, because I couldn't quite see in the video? While I was changing the cable on my starter the nut dropped down under it. I wasn't able to fish it out and it seemed to disappear somewhere near the front of the starter motor (near the gear end). Is there a hole there somewhere? I saw there was one further back with a lead going through it but it can't have gone through there. Update: I just looked at some images of the crankcase and it seems there is a hole there, I wondering where it leads, maybe it dumps on to the ground, I can't imagine that water that gets in the starter motor housing would go anywhere else.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G’day Dave sorry for the late reply. The only other hole I can think of is below the starter where the gear selector indicator wire routes through, at least that’s what I think it is. Highly unlikely that the fastener would fit through it though.

    • @DaveWatts_ejectamenta
      @DaveWatts_ejectamenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think sometimes with this model there is a drain hole at the front instead, maybe that's the case for the Mitsuba starter models, my bike's from 1980. I was able to find the nut on the floor in the end.

  • @DaveWatts_ejectamenta
    @DaveWatts_ejectamenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's also a useful modification for the charging circuit (as by standard the charging route is via the right hand controls!). The G/W wire from the stator is connected to the R/W wire from the regulator. More info on BassCliff's website including a wiring diagram with the mod gsarchive.bwringer.com/

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'day Dave, I'm familiar with this as it is not isolated to the GS. I had a quick look at the link but couldn't see the article so I didn't look too far. The question I have is why? The Suzuki GS1000, and quite a lot of other bikes for that matter, have an issue with their charging system as it puts out way too much power for what the bike needs. This results in the charging system having to sink the heat somewhere and that is usually in the alternator which results in overheating, breakdown of the insulation and eventually a short that usually takes out the reg/rec at the same time, this even happened on my 2005 Triumph Daytona. The factory engineers tried to mitigate this by diverting one phase through the headlight to try and reduce the load on the rest of the system, and cooling the stater with oil. That mod essentially bypasses that mitigation and puts all three phases through the reg/rec all the time. I can't wrap my head around why this is a good idea.

    • @DaveWatts_ejectamenta
      @DaveWatts_ejectamenta 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that its a long path for the charging circuit to take and involves a few switches and the like all of which could stop some of the current getting to the battery. I am glad though that you questioned this and it made me think again about whether to make the modification or not. The modification only makes sense if the headlight is on all the time. By the way the article is a pdf of the wiring diagram showing the modification 'GS1000G (80-81) Wiring Diagram (Color)'

    Nice video. I really like the old GS bikes. I've done quite a bit of work on my dad's 81 GS1000L. I'm guessing the reason they bypassed the fusebox for the main fuse is because of the high current running there from the r/r , coupled with the fact they are prone to getting bad connections internally in the box, causing the box to overheat and get burned. Has happened on my dad's bike once.
    Also, I saw in another comment that you are aware of the charging issues of these bikes. Just thought I'd add, in case you don't know; a series type regulator/rectifier is a really nice upgrade for reliability on these old bikes. Lets the stator run way cooler. You can read more about it here, if you are intersted (best website for Suzuki gs bikes by the way) :
    thegsresources.com/statorpapers5.php

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes someone introduced me to the stator papers already. Sadly not isolated to the GS' and is an issue with a lot of bikes actually. It just seems to be quite prevalent on these things. I will cover it when I get to it.
