    My dad didn’t do so well at school and had serious addictions. But him telling me his life story and how he would do everything differently gave me the boost to do well and make good life choices.
    He genuinely cried when I passed my exams with decent grades and when I told him I’m going to university.

    It's more like when I realized that my mom was smarter than anybody has ever given her credit for, including herself.
    For context, my father's family has always been a bit smarter than the average. Like, my uncle worked for NASA in the 80s smarter, my other uncle has an encyclopedic knowledge of Blues, Jazz, and Rock, etc. In the 90s my father taught himself how to work with/program/fix computers and I have always admired him for that. My siblings and I were also pretty smart cookies.
    However, all of my life, my father has had a bad habit of pointing out people's mistakes and being very critical. He was especially critical of my mom, who would mix up words (I suspect dyslexia) and didn't know ... everything.
    As a result, I grew up thinking that my mom wasn't very smart. What I didn't see at the time was that my mom kept a lot of self-help books by her bedside. She had severe anxiety and depression all of her life and living with an emotionally abusive partner didn't help. She was doing what she could, therapy, medication, reading, to help herself.
    When I grew into a young adult and was basically immobilized by depression and self-criticism, it was my mother who taught me that you're only a failure if you give up. When my father left, my mother put herself through college, got a job with NAMI as an emotional support specialist, and advocated for mental health issues with the State Board.
    Unfortunately. she was already in her 50s when she started and she had to retire after about 10 years due to health problems. She's 70 now and people from her old job still call her just to talk. While my dad was very technically smart and able to speak "properly" the person people wanted to talk to was my mom. That's emotional intelligence.

    Trying to explain basic concepts like "retail workers have feelings too" to a grown woman, only to be yelled at for "embarassing" her in public. She also buys into Herbalife and refuses to go to the gym because she doesn't want to go alone. I'm underweight and she's trying to get me to drink her magical powder because the child she semi-adopted before I was born sucked her into it.

    I feel like I'm not particularly smart, but when I look at my parents, I'm not surprised. My mum's not smart and often doesn't understand things, and my dad dropped out of school at age 15 and has never had a proper job or developed any discernible skills outside of his hobby. He can barely read and write. God help me >_

    • @sarahcoleman5269

      To be fair, your capacity for learning is different from being "smart". Some people just have an easier time retaining information than most people. We call these people smart, even though these people aren't always able to apply the things they learn to real-world problems (personal experience).
      Don't feel bad because your dad dropped out, there is a serious problem with our education system and not everybody is able to absorb information that way. It's unfortunate that a lot of people are turned off of further learning because of how terribly our education system treats it.
      We're fortunate that in this day and age learning is at our fingertips. The desire to learn is never wasted and anybody can do it. Whether you're taking community college classes or watching a TH-cam video, anybody can learn if they want to.
      Don't despair because your dad has a hobby, look and see how he's learning it. Maybe it will help you learn whatever you want to learn.

    I had a mentally disabled, psychologically abusive mother. Two stories that come to mind are having to convince her that 100-prood alcohol wasn't 100%, but 50%, and challenging her to prove me wrong when I informed her that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not, in fact, based on true events. She claimed to remember the newspaper coverage of the events. This was long after Google and the internet were common. She just gave up the argument rather than allow either of us to definitively win.

    My mom might fit a bit into this category as she struggles a lot with basic things but she does learn, the problem shows up when she forgets often. She has told me she’s always been like this and that it has affected her grades when she was in school. My dad is the opposite, he is intelligent in almost everything, this does result in him being a know-it-all. Being with my mom is frustrating as she has done some stupid things and will forget any advice that she is told. I still love her so much, she has been there for me at my lows and has always supported my choices, she is a wonderful parent.

    My issue is my mom was very smart ( though she didn't get her highschool diploma because of having chronic asthma as a kid and missing a lot of school, but my dad is "slow" and has behavioral issues ( but still was able to join the military). However, I'm a bit quirky, and in elementary school was called the "R" word because I had dyscalculia and behavioral issues. Even when I was going to college I got called the "R" word by neighbors because I like anime and other "immature" stuff. Then a few years ago a cousin from my dad's side of the family says that most of everyone on my dad's side of the family has Asperger's, so I guess that's why I'm so quirky! :)

    I was adopted by my grandparents. My dad was my bio mom's dad, her biological father was unknown. My bio dad was, as far as I've been told, a weird genius that wouldn't talk if he didn't want to, and that I resemble him a lot.
    I'm smart but average. When I was a child it was notoriously smarter than average because my strong point was just taking information and not forgetting so I got everything at the first try. I learned how to read at four, so I always was the one reading the labels for my mom and taking her places because she was old, sick and was getting blind. She was illiterate. Like, she did two days pf elementary school only, because her mom was afraid she would get smarter than her and scam her or something. So she knew too little for the speed I was learning then, but later on, when I wasn't able to learn as fast as a kid I remembered that my mom learned basic English just watching movies in her thirties and whatever I read to her she more or less memorized her so she was actually smarter than I could dream of, even tho she said some ignorant stuff at times like some song being satanic and stuff.
    My bio mom once said that Brazilian keratin causes hair cancer, which was funny. Also told me to pray because Jesus was going to cure my autism like he would cure her diabetes. Also said that insulin causes glaucoma because people that use insulin get glaucoma and I just couldn't even bother to explain to her that she's dumb, because she's dumb and violent. She is enslaved to 3 different mlms.

    Just had a moment with my mom, where she was arguing that this one chair was dark brown, and I partially agreed with her. I noted that the colour had faded on certain parts so it was actually black in the seat area, but some parts still had a slight brown hue to them (though the brown was so dark I would call it black anyway). I said this multiple times and she still didn't clock it.
    I'm starting to think she has momentary colour blindness. At one point she claimed a dark blue building was green. She also claimed my dad has tritan colour blindness but she's made other weird claims so I'm not sure I trust her on that one.

    What really made me question my mom’s intelligence was her biblical BS. She was a typical “reborn” Christian (attacked gays, interpreted the Bible however she wanted, hypocritical, etc), and when the subject of dinosaurs came around, she said they weren’t real. The Bible mentions nothing of dinosaurs, and that scientists used their imaginations to create the dinosaurs and buried the bones, dug them up and pretend they discovered them.
    Me, a huge dinosaur fanatic at the time and a biology nerd all around, was listening to this and questioned who the hell seriously listens to this and thinks there’s an ounce of sense in that.
    No, I don’t think people are stupid by default for being religious, it’s the lack of logic behind certain argument they make and never stop to think about it for a moment is what makes me question your own intellect.
    My mom was a naive and extremely gullible person, and she also had the mindset that everyone was watching her, and that my dad somehow paid people to come spy on her when a fast food joint suddenly got busy out of nowhere. It was so bad that even I started to believe that kind of BS, so you can imagine what it was like the few years I grew up with her (my grandparents, dad’s parents, raised me).

    The cat one is actually somewhat true. Cats are known to like milk, and babies just so happen to drink it the most. Cats will lick babies mouths and the mucous from the baby and cat will create a film over the babies mouth, babies arent strong enough to breathe through this little bubble and end up suffocating. My mom told me that when I was like 5 and it stayed with me since and whenever it gets brought up I make sure to say it, you never know when someone may see it and stop something bad from happening.

    In high school and college I always made sure my car was full of gas, and if possible, to never let it go below half a tank. In high school it was because why not and I would always be able to places with friends.
    In college it was because I lived at home and college was 45 miles away.
    My mom would chastise me about it like I was wasting money and time. One day I asked her why, and she said, "You have half a tank that you will never use then." After digging a little, she basically thought that the only gas you would use was the new gas you pumped in, and that the old stuff never got used until the new was gone.
    Basically she didn't think that a liquid could mix together. This was the same lady that would water down our juices when we were little to make them last longer.
    She's also a Democrat, so definitely slow.

    2:17 my teacher actually told us something similar in primary school. The idea was that plants breathe oxygen and at night the phonosysthesis shuts down so they won't compensate the oxygen that they used up and you could end up suffocating during the night if you have too many plants in your room and windows are closed. To this day I have no idea if that's true or not and I'm too scared to try. :D

    • @luccapaolohsuhelmich7505
      @luccapaolohsuhelmich7505 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true, plants are always consuming oxygen. Still, a flower woudn't consume nearly enough oxygen to deplete the room of it. If that were true, mom woudn't be able to sleep in the same room as dad does, since humans use up oxygen at a much faster rate

    • @martinprochazka3714
      @martinprochazka3714 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luccapaolohsuhelmich7505 Well, I wasn't talking about single flower though... The question is rather -- Is it feasible to put enough plants in a room to effectively suffocate you overnight?
