I refer to Naomi's segments of these last three episodes as "Dominique Tipper acting her ass off for three episodes." The almost no-dialogue performance she gives through this part is so fucking amazing.
Naomi has the worst case of the Bends in the history of science fiction. Her joints feel like they're filled with needles, and she's got a bad sunburn, and her vision is blurry because some of the blood vessels have ruptured. She's in bad, bad shape -- but she's not dead. The writing of this episode is top-notch. :)
As far as I know there is only one case of someone describing what the effects of vacuum do..During the Apollo mission training someone had a suit breach in a vacuum chamber…He said he felt his saliva boiling away in his mouth before he passed out…He survived
I love the Expanse videos, Expanse Sundays have been the highlight of my week for the past year now. As for doing QnAs for the live reactions during the final season, I think you guys could do it, I think you can trust the book fans to not just spoil stuff willy-nilly, they're very good about not spoiling stuff to people that have only seen the show.
The score marks aren't for Naomi to count the junction boxes... they're to count how many times she opens the "vestibule" to vacuum. Thus each opening means she's losing the amount of O2 equal to the volume of the vestibule from within the cabin. It's a cubic feet calculation she's estimating mentally. The vestibule is open to the cabin until she has to seal it off from the cabin prior to opening the opposite door into vacuum. When she goes back into the cabin she has to reverse the order of door operation which is when the vestibule becomes re-pressurized from O2 within the cabin. Each door reentry decreases the O2 percent by some fraction. If you look back, you will see the cu.ft. specs of the spaces provided on a nameplate near to where she makes her marks.
You'll notice it's also shown in metric, for the other 7.3 billion of us - pretty much guarantee Naomi isn't calculating _anything_ in cubic feet. But sure, otherwise a valid point.
As best as I can tell from online articles and videos by credible scientists and engineers and doctors, this is what Naomi is going through right now: - any exposed skin that was facing the sun would experience very bad sunburn (only brief exposure, and a lot further from the sun than Earth is, but no atmosphere or magnetosphere or ozone layer to mitigate the solar radiation burn) - exposed skin facing away from the sun would experience frostbite - most surface moisture from her eyes, inside her nose, in her mouth and to a lesser extent inside her throat and sinuses, as well as on her exposed skin, would rapidly evaporate away, leaving her with very dry and very sore and irritated eyes, nose, mouth, throat and sinuses and very dry and irritated skin - even though she breathed out quickly, her lungs would have been under significant stress, resulting in inflammation and maybe asthma symptoms - in fact, her whole inflammatory system would probably be having a freak out, so all over swelling, soreness, fever and flu-like symptoms, as well as skin rashes and the like, plus maybe diahorrea and vomiting. In short, Naomi Nagata feels like utter shit. Like a cross between the worst hangover you've ever had with the worst flu you've ever had, while you're also suffering from both extreme sunburn and some frostbite, and maybe an asthma attack. 0/10, would not recommend. EDIT: Oh yes, I forgot, she's also have what scuba divers call "the bends"
Something that was mentioned in earlier seasons is Naomi is one of the best engineers in the solar system - if anyone has a chance of getting out of that situation, it's Naomi. They show pretty well in these few episodes is how difficult it can be to be pushed into a position of power without any preparation - there are people on all sides telling you what you need to do - it's a great test of character.
16:37 Well Ashford is dead.. and as far as Drummer knows Naomi is too and so its Fred.. at this point Drummer just lost everyone she cared about outside her family..every single one of them and all by Marco's hand .. who is now issing ass orders to her.. so yes.. Drummer is gonna be pissed
The look on Amos' face when Peaches was talking to his friend was priveless. The actor really captured the emotional detachment in him as he tried to figure out what was gonna happen. 😂😂
It's interesting watching people's reactions to the idea of striking back at Pallas Station in the Belt in retaliation for Marco's strike on Earth. With the detachment of fictional TV show, people can EASILY see how bad an idea it is and how it plays right into Marco's hands. Yet in real life, that is EXACTLY what the US and allies did after 9/11 with the war on terror. Very interesting.
Nope, people are able to think like that in real life too, no fictional detachment required. There were also _plenty_ of people urging restraint after September 11th - here in the UK for instance hundreds of thousands of ordinary people marched against the (second) invasion of Iraq.
@@anonymes2884 Yeah, there were a good number of US politicians and advisors at all levels against. Problem is only a handful of names remain since most had their careers killed instantly for being against invasion. It wasn't even that hard to kill their names; There's a article that came back around asking 2 advisors about invading Afghanistan, and the guy against basically listed all the ways it was a bad idea and even correctly predicted how'd it end like Vietnam, and all the pro-war guy had to do was write like 5 sentences calling the other guy stupid and it killed the guy who was right's entire career.
@@andrewdiaz3529 Oh for sure. And as history shows, those hundreds of thousands of ordinary protesters were also completely ignored by those in power in the UK too (because, y'know, we invaded Iraq :). Still, public opinion was split pretty much in half (here at least). My point being that the OP's implication that people can only see it's a bad idea "[w]ith the detachment of fictional TV show" is just plain wrong. It seems to be saying something profound about human nature but isn't (though judging by upvotes, some people _want_ to believe it). In reality, how reactors respond to the Pallas proposal is actually pretty representative of how plenty of people responded after September 11th.
i dont know if its the same in the TV show but in the book the Chetzemoka was acelerating at 2G-ish wich further caused physical trouble to Naomi on top of the damage of her space walk
The tally-marks alongside the airlock are where Naomi is keeping track of how many times she has gone into the space between hulls, because when she does that the air in the airlock escapes into space. Naomi knows the total volume of the ship's main space and the airlock and that tells her how many times she can vent the airlock before she is out of air.
Man, I was going to ask if they'd decided what was replacing The Expanse yet, but I didn't realise S6 is coming up mid-December. Thought it wasn't going to drop until next year.
I actually don’t think book readers will be able to spoil much. The producers have already suggested that they may deviate quite a bit from the books in Season 6, since after all it’s planned to be the final TV season whereas there are still several more books after book 6. So they may well not just condense stuff, but also cut stuff out or even completely change things. Book spoilers may simply turn out to be false.
I really hope you guys do season 6 live with Q&As and everything. It is true there is a chance of spoilers from book readers but I hope that doesn't deter you from doing it.
@@alexanderjermaineabrahams1615 season 6 starts on December 10. In less than 2 weeks. The time jump you are referring to is after the events of book/season 6. Currently there are no plans for more Expanse on screen after that.
@@thontor Though the creators have said they _could_ continue after S6 if the opportunity arose (which sounds like a smart way to approach things). To the OP's point in general though, nope, apologies to those who're careful but after reading comments sections for hundreds of Expanse reactions I just don't trust book readers not to spoil these guys (I know the series is taking a different path but speculation based purely on what we've seen and "speculation" based on 10 years of novels written by two of the people intimately involved in the creation of the show are two different things).
I'd really enjoy theorising with you all. This being the last season for now makes me want to cherish it and I think to think what could lie ahead would make for interesting discussions
"Humans are not supposed to be in space." We're not supposed to leave the ground at all. Amtrak is way more expensive than a plane, and Greyhound is hell though 😮💨
Fun fact: explosives contain their own oxygen, that's what makes them explosives. An explosive without its own oxygen is called "fuel." Edit: By "contain their own oxygen" I don't mean they contain breathable O₂. I mean the oxygen is part of the explosive's molecules. As in TNT, Trinitrotoluene, C₆H₂(NO₂)₃CH₃, which contains six oxygen atoms per TNT molecule.
I think they also needed to have oxygen, as well as heat so that it looks habitable from a distance. Any heat, would look like a massive bonfire in the cold vacuum of space.
While not as insane, I kind of get Heaven Sent vibes from how Naomi is fighting against the trap Marco set. Also, that many bombs? Someone's unsure of his plan.
Actually, they do have telescopes if I remember correctly. I think their passive sensors are telescopes (which can also see infrared or ultraviolet), radio telescopes (for the rest of the EM spectrum) and their active sensors are radar (radio bounce back) and LIDAR (laser bounce back). But I think it would be damn hard for the Roci's telescopes to see into a window in another ship unless it was very close.
When I first saw this, I thought she was using Morse Code when she was interrupting the transmission - something like just "TRAP" or "TRAP BOMB" over and over.
Season 6 is going to have to deviate in a lot of ways from the books because of how much is already different, with some characters dying and some still being alive and others are not around or had their roles completely reworked into others'. But certain major plot actions and resolutions will probably stay mostly the same so someone with book knowledge will have some clue as what to expect there.
