That's because it's an e-bike, a pedal bike with a motor. It's not an electric motorcycle. Why? You don't need a license or insurance etc. It's just a standard pedal bike. Despite this, they can usually do more than double that speed. They're simply limited to comply with regulations.

Automotive Territory: Trending News & Car Reviews ... during my commute I see 50, 60, 70 and 80km speed limits. A limit of 50 kph would be dangerous on those roads. Not trying to pick a fight here but a street legal vehicle that can’t keep up with traffic is not worth buying or promoting it’s just a toy.

30 mph is 50km/h, so this should be enough for commuting within the city. The top speed of these bikes is limited on purpose, so the riders could get on these with a basic moped license.

Automotive Territory: Trending News & Car Reviews
My resources are first-hand testimony from a disillusioned zero owner.. he owns a business/ body shop/ collision shop.. he repairs wrecked cars for customers, or he buys totaled cars and fixes them and sells them himself. He does the same with motorcycles. That’s how he bought the zero a few years ago. It was totaled, mostly because of expensive road rash to parts but basically sound. He Repaired the superficial damage to the zero and had been riding it for a couple years. We share the same enthusiasm for Italian motorcycles. Owns many Ducati/Moto Moroni / guzzi Machines. He likes unusual bikes..That’s why he bought the zero for himself.
I was in his shop having my own Guzzi to him for its annual state inspection sticker a few days ago (today’s date is June 9, 2019). I noticed the zero still sitting where it was sitting almost a year ago at his shop. I asked him what’s the story with that now. He told me the story about the batteries being $42,000. he told me,The battery pack consists of seven batteries, $6000 each.
I ask him how much are these motorcycles new? He said when these came out they were around $20,000. But he did not buy his machine new..He bought it totaled from an insurance company.
I asked him how did this happen to your battery. He said, he went on to a blog for electric motorcycles. One of the bloggers suggested that he would get greater range if he would discharge his batteries and then charge them. And that’s exactly what happened. He discharged the batteries, but they would not come back. He called zero company, and they told him that those batteries were in danger of catching fire in that discharged state. The batteries had actually swollen up / the cases of the batteries were bulging.
He also has another electric motorcycle very similar to the zero called a victory. He bought it totaled from an insurance company, in hopes of getting the battery out of it to use in his zero. But when the motorcycle arrived, it was in too good of shape to cannibalize just for the batteries. So he resurrected the victory, and is able to ride that. I asked him if he tried other places to solve the battery problem for the zero? He said he has tried everything he can think of and everything that people on the blogs have suggested. The zero company talked him through the charging ritual and had him do the checklist to ensure that things were set up correctly and that he was doing it correctly. He was doing everything correctly, and the zero company told him that his battery is toast.
If the new electric zero is approximately $15,000, I would have no way of knowing that, I have no interest in electric motorcycles. None.
      A footnote.
I was looking on eBay for a possible battery for my buddy and I happen to find a battery for a two year old tesla automobile for sale. Now we’re talking about a two-year-old tesla battery out of a wrecked Tesla for sale on eBay. The starting price was $26,500
I’m not even slightly interested in teslas anymore either. Because I tend to keep my vehicles a long time. How long? I owned a Ford E150 van that I bought new in 1977, until 2008. Also: I own a 1958MGA that I bought in 1968. I still own it. I have a 1994 Honda pacific coast that I used for all these years as a commuter. I kept my 1986 Yamaha venture royale for 18 years, 138,000 trouble free miles.I still on my 1974 Yamaha RD 250 club racer Box Stock roadracing machine that I won six championships on/2 time national champion on.(AMA--W.E.R.A.)
I have a Gibson electric guitar that I have owned since 1966..
My point is, I take care of my stuff, I keep things a long time if I like it..I just can’t see that ever happening with an electric motorcycle when the batteries cost almost twice as much as the vehicle did new.

Price and range are the main concerns for me. Top speed doesn't have to be massive- I don't want to exceed the speed limit on a bike. If it maxes out at 65 or 70 I'm good, I just want to be able to cruise comfortably at 45 or 55 most of the time while having the capability to go a little faster if need be. The range needs to be over 100 miles for sure, 200 would be the long term goal, and the price needs to be less than 10k in order to interest me. I could go with less speed and range up to a point if the price is more like 5k. If you look at something like the Harley electric bike, that is a well put together machine that already has the type of performance I'm looking for- but I won't spend 30k on it. No way. It's coming along though, and at some point there's going to be a breakthrough model that performs well and is priced within the range that I'm willing to pay.

If you're going 20 mph on an electric bike, why not just get one if those pedal bikes with an electric motor strapped on? Cheaper and more suited to the laws and environment of cities. What I think the sweet spot is for a real electric motorcycle is $8, 000.00 or less, simple fiberglass body with steel frame, and spend the rest of the budget on the best motor and batteries you can. Cost to produce should be like 2 k or less in materials. And labor costs shouldn't be much as it would simply be spraying out some fiberglass, or even using frn plastic in all reality, and assembling outside parts. There's a guy who made a Plywood electric bike that shows how cheaply and well these things can be done up.

Well he is not talking about Indian markets. He is talking about International markets.
Yes bikes upto $10000 are affordable in International markets not in India. They don't care about Indian markets. Strategy in Indian markets are different from International market.
Emflux is Indian startup but I think they will have to move out of Indian market if they want to make some revenue out of that product.

They are still expensive for the range they offer. At this rate I think we cannot adopt to EVs especially electric bikes. This will have tremendous impact on developing countries where the average income is only 1000$ per month

    • @automotiveterritory
      @automotiveterritory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

They are expensive for sure. The thing is that like all new technologies electric vehicles and bikes do cost more. Manufacturers are spending a lot of the research and development, so this is one of the factors that is driving the price up.
