Matt i know this is an older video but i just recently upgraded to the i230 from a used set of i20s that i got off ebay 9 years ago, re-gripped twice and have absolutely loved. I was leary about the 230's because im a pretty high handicap and not that consistent of an iron striker but oh my, these irons are for anybody meaning if i can hit them, anybody can. They are awesome. The 9, pw and uw just stop on a dime when they hit any green and i don't even know how to add spin. Very forgiving and look and sound awesome. No regrets for this high handicapper.
agreed, they are a cavity back. Not hollow body. i525 are the hollow bodied version and having tested both I’d suggest the i525, like the P790 and Mizuno HMB/225 all tend to suffer with knuckle balls when you hit them a little higher on the face. I played the HMB and moved back to a blade after suffering knuckle balls especially off a small tee on par 3’s. i230 for me were longer than current MP20’s, solid and very consistent. i525 we’re longer again with a stronger loft but potential for low spin knuckle balls in gaming context. While Extra groves and hydro pearl finish all working to help mitigate that likelihood.
The thing is, this Ping i230 club is NOT a hollow body, it's a cavity back with a badge in the cavity with a dampening foam in the bottom of the club, the i525 is the HOLLOW BODY polymer-filled club!! The i230 iron was designed for the tour player & better player as it has a bunch of stuff built into the club that the PROS wanted that the i210 didn't have to make it more forgiving PLUS workable in a player's iron that DELIVERS very consistent YARDAGES!! i think they achieved that as Westwood, Tony Finau, and many Pros have already switched to them!
20 years playing rac lt 2003... Demo day at my club last week.. Hit about 50 shots on course.. And I made the switch.. Didn't know anything about these until after I bought them.. Usually research to death but I hit these so damn good didn't bother.. Only know do I realize what a great choice I made.. FYI 3 handicap 55yrs old.. May buy 2 sets the way I use irons I'll have them forever.
Great review, Matt! I like how many different shots you showed - different distances and lies, etc. Technically the i230s are not hollow-bodied, they've just covered the cavity with a plate, like the Titleist T200. Whereas the P790 and i525 have true hollow bodies that are designed to increase ball speed and lower spin (thus the fliers you encountered), the back plate on the T200s and the i230 is to improve sound and feel. Pretty pricey, as you said. I'm hoping this release will drop the used price of the i210s!
Hey great additional info Daniel Cohen! I have i210's since they came out, they are amazing! I also trialed i500's at the same time which sounded terrible but were absolute bazookas nearly a club further than my i210's which themselves are the longest irons I've used!
@@moritzbunger9447 only due to the plastic badging in the back makes them look hollow which is not the same as the hollow body construction irons to which he is referring to like the Taylormade P790, P770, Mizuno 225 , PXG irons Callaway Apex Pro and Ping 525 these irons are constructed this way to have much more face flex more for distance than accuracy which the i230 is a players iron like the T100 ,.you can smash that plastic piece off the back of the T200's and it won't effect the performance at all it will just look like crap , you cant do that to hollow body iron thou ;) ; )
@@moritzbunger9447 They're not, truly. The T200 construction is similar to the i230, i.e. a cavity back with a badge or plate of a different material covering the cavity. Titleist calls the back plate on the T200 the Engineered Muscle Plate, but its real purpose is to dampen acoustics.
I hit the i230s and compared them to my i525s and Takomo 101s. They went as far as the other clubs with 2.5-3deg weaker lofts, great feel as long as I hit them in the center, if I didn't, the distance loss for me was quite dramatic, especially if I hit it off the toe.
Love the content ANDY but what is with all the comparisons to the P790s? Not even close to the same kind of iron. I could possibly see a comparison to the 770s
Have to say they look freaking awesome - very classy design. Sadly they are way to expensive for me especially in current economic climate. Good review Matt - the nice variety of shots tried gave a good test of the clubs.
Thanks for the testing. These are NOT hollow bodied irons, and they are not in the same class as the P790s. Not even close. They are players CBs, and they don't have jacked lofts like the 790s (unless you go for power spec). Many PGA Ping pros have them in the bag already. If they created random jumpers, they most definitely wouldn't be in their bags.
To say these new irons is slightly out of my price range this year is a huge understatement money is getting tight, I will have to stick with my old clubs for one more year.
Just sold my Ping Anser irons that I bought in 2013. They were awesome for game improvement but also good for workability. Now looking for a new set, with my hcap at 9.3 I will think about trying these out.
You said that they are on the expensive side but they’re right in line with every other major brand’s prices. I don’t know if there is a perfect iron, but if there were I’m sure Mizuno makes them.
I believe recalling a video where you changed to the T100S model irons. With the i230s going the same distance as your T-100S (that is stronger lofted), doesn’t it seem like the i230s are performing exceptionally well in comparison?
I bought the callaway apex I have the same problem with the pitching wedge it some times Flys 20 yards farther it is hard to trust the club and they are not hallow bodies.
I noticed how the tungsten toe weight was lower than in previous Ping irons. I wonder if the heel weight is in a matching location or if it is higher and does that make a difference?
Hollow bodied? Maybe it's just a semantics thing, but as the predecessors to the 210's that would seem odd to me - at least by way of comparison to irons like the p790's. Don't seem like they'd even be in the same ballpark design wise...
Fair play. I had the perception you were 100% Mizuno and not able to review like this. Ping non forged historically great if not pretty - where do you see the ping forged range V the market (future vid??)
I work at a golf shop and hit the demos a couple weeks ago. First shot, by feel, they were awesome!!! That coming from a guy who fit himself into the T-200s in our bay. I may be going back to ping once released here

The i525 is hollow and compares with 790. I dont think i230 is. They are casted with polymer to get better feel.
Another great video Matt but they’re not actually hollow bodied irons. It’s a back plate to make the clubs look more blade like

Get these on order. Moving from MP20-MB. Seem to be a long lead on the irons. In testing these were so consistent and solid.
What shaft and flex do you recommend for a mid handicapper who normally plays regular flex?

2 years into using i210. Will have to try them to see if there is anything different
I think I’ll be getting the Cobra forged tech
10:40 Are those PXG irons in your bag for another review? The Ping i230 irons are getting a lot of positive reviews.
You said that they are on the expensive side but they’re right in line with every other major brand’s prices. I don’t know if there is a perfect iron, but if there were I’m sure Mizuno makes them.
In my opinion Wilson Staff irons closet to be perfect. Feel, looks, performance and price combination so good.
Well I can tell you I had a chance to hit these in a shop the other day. They felt absolutely insanely great and were shockingly forgiving.

I'd love to find out what you think to the new i525 as well.
What golf course is this? I don't recall hearing it mentioned. Looks great!
La Cala - Europa I think
They’re very, very close to being a hosel rockets (the ones at the Trafford centre) Matt
These seem absolutely fantastic!
I bought the callaway apex I have the same problem with the pitching wedge it some times Flys 20 yards farther it is hard to trust the club and they are not hallow bodies.
So out of these and the i525 which would be the “easier” club to game? I’m kind of confused as to where this sits in pings lineup
What shafts were you using Matt ? Tks..
congrats on nearly 200k!
I noticed how the tungsten toe weight was lower than in previous Ping irons. I wonder if the heel weight is in a matching location or if it is higher and does that make a difference?

It would be good if you showed the numbers from the range to what you had to the course number wise I e shots to green
I didn't think these were hollow?.The 525's are hollow, these are a replacement for the I210 which wasn't hollow.
For the price ( in Australia at least) they would want to be perfect.
Fair play. I had the perception you were 100% Mizuno and not able to review like this.
Ping non forged historically great if not pretty - where do you see the ping forged range V the market (future vid??)
Cracking vid Matt.
Thanks Matt
Why is Matt calling the i230’s hollow bodied??? It’s a cavity back which has a cover on the back isn’t it.
Matt, you go a long way to test some clubs out?
Feels OK.. the ball flight is way to high for me. I’m sticking to my miuras
Not a hollow body iron. Cavity back?
I use Taylormade P770’s, I’ve had them for 2 years and think they are amazing, have zero reason to change.
Congratulations, do you want a brownie badge…
@@PH-kp7qx Do you remember what your mum said. If you can’t say anything nice, then keep your mouth shut.
Are they really hollow bodied? I know they have an elastomer insert but different reviews/websites have a varied take on this.
Great review, hate the price
Not hollow body. Cavity back with an elastomer insert.
they’re not hollow bodied though
Have to say, hard to beat the Cobra Forge Tec
I’ve not tried them but have plans too
@@Mattfryergolf I'm playing them as a blended set, MiM short irons, forge tec mid and long irons, swapped from T100's the difference is crazy
@@Mattfryergolf what compelled you to use that new ping putter?
@@Mattfryergolf These pings more forgiving than 225 irons?
You think a golf channel would know that the i230 is NOT a hollow bodied iron ffs 😂
Very strong performance but the feel is not there if you’re used to forged irons. My T100 feels infinitely better.
I have not heard before that these are hollow bodied irons.
Your right Paul they are NOT hollow bodied, I would have hoped a reviewer know this !!!
Pretty close!
I think so
I work at a golf shop and hit the demos a couple weeks ago. First shot, by feel, they were awesome!!! That coming from a guy who fit himself into the T-200s in our bay. I may be going back to ping once released here
It’s not a hollow club that’s the 525 it’s a players cavity multi piece
I’d put these in the bag…
Why do we keep calling these hallow body when they are not….
Hollow? I525 these are not
Are you on a Golf Mates holiday?
The i230 irons are not hollow.
They are not hollow!
No such thing as the perfect anything!
Everything can always be better…
Hollow body??? These are not hollow body...
@0:01 No.
Have to try them
If you want to send me your old P790’s just ask for my address! lol
Not hollow body
These are not Hollow. You had one job........
Just came to comment NO
I had to stop watching after 30 seconds because he called these "hollow" and compared them to hollow TMs. That's flatly irresponsible.
Very poor reviewer and review, surely you should research the product your testing.
Poor!
This is the best looking ping iron
