I started playing jazz in 1952. In recent years I have feared that the music would die out with my generation; you can't imagine how I feel too hear these young people doing their stuff. Not only do they have technique to spare but they play with passion and a real feel for the music. There are lots of copyists of the NO style but this is the real thing.
My husband spent the first 9 years of his life in Nawlins, I'd never been so it was in the 'bucket list'. In 2013 we rode Amtrak's City of New Orleans from my hometown of Chicago to spend a week. It was the first time for us on Amtrak [which great btw] and my first time in Nawlins. We were able to catch Tuba Skinny and what a thrill that was!! Great town, great people, great food and awesome street music!!!
I was with a church choir that toured down to Nawleans in 1964 or 65. Three thins I remember: court of two sisters (restaurant). Waiter took our orders and quit, not telling anyone. We were a little miffed sitting around a huge table in the back outdoors. Visiting Gretna...old Bapt church and Standing in a street and listening a performance of Preservation Hall group.
@@haroldbrown6630 ~ I'm no expert, but it sure looks like 'flatfooting' when they first come on. Then they go into a 'Lindy Hop'/'Jitterbug' type dance.
How much we love trad jazz . Being a 40s child I was introduced to music form day one . Love the big bands / trad / grew into the blues then rock & roll . Guess not many of us to day had the joy and privilage of the exposure to so much of the music that is alive today as it was i. The 20s/ 30s /40s / 50s / 60s / 70s / right up until today . Greenfield Jazz Club , Ronnie Scott / Chris Barbour / Acker Bilk / . I am trying to pass on my love of the big bands . Stan Kenton / Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey / Glenn Miller / Muddy Waters Sister Rosetta Tharp/ Ella Fitz , . Been lucky to see live the past few years , Michael Buble / Billy Joel / Queen / Old Blue Eyes / and so much talent from South Africa . Hope to pass on my love to my grandchildren for trad/ blues / blue grass / progressive . Jazz . How I miss those days we have the odd jazz bands in and around josi but now so far and few. Magic music .
There is more pleasure to behold in this short video than every music festival [excepting of course Chuck, Jerry, Carl etc,] ever held. True music lovers will understand.
Currently, this band is ranked #! by those who know squat...i don't know squat personally, but i adore Shaye, and what she has accomplished with this band. Shaye is the driver. Ericka the vocalist, Todd Burdick on Tuba defines Tuba Skinny imo, Barnabus Jones is huge, Jon Doyle and Ewan Bleach make this the best ensemble ever..and the inimitable Robin Rapozzi makes this arguably the best assemblage of musicians in this hemisphere..enjoy repeatedly.over and over ...life is shorter than you think
Washboard player is truly amazing... and this is coming from someone with two degrees in washboardology. The two excellent dancers are, a rare plus. They are terrific, as opposed to the more common variety of oafs who crudely and selfishly insinuate themselves into someone else's performance.
You see that a lot in TS videos. These folks aren't just dancers. They are at a level consistent with dance competition hobbyists. I assume NOLA attracts such people, just as it attracts musicians.
Burt Bloom, no need for that Burt. The great thing is to get up there and have fun, if the world can see you're not that great, what of it? I would think most jazz bands don't want to be elitist about it.
I enjoy this number (regularly), apart from being enthrawled by the whole band I particularly liked Robin Rapozzi's solo to this one .....and the dancers who swept passed occasionally. ..... Brilliant !
I think that was a Shag variety rather than Balboa, actually. I don't know which one - just that my knees wouldn't last long at it. I like how at 3:29 she rescued the cash that blew overboard and put it back in your tip jar.
Li avrò ascoltati almeno 8000 volte, ma ogni volta, è un autentico piacere.....sono i migliori, e poi quel folletto di Rapuzzi, è uno spettacolo a sè....
Like the other correspondents, I (in England) am so grateful and privileged that you continually offer us these wonderful videos of the amazing Tuba Skinny. This tune, by the way, is on their latest CD, where its title is given as 'Jackson Stomp'. And by the way, as you may have noticed, it's extremely unusual in being an ELEVEN-bar Blues.
Apparently there is one company left in the United States that makes wooden washboards. I wonder how many are sold to musicians rather than people who use them in their laundry?
If They haven't already played the Montreal Jazz Festival, they should really consider it! Man, that would be such a treat! Thanx for posting this great clip!
okay forget my last comment...haha what fun we had.The magic of this band like tuba skinny is that every instrument has its place.Everyone is equal to one another.Nice .i like that.Is it because of this kinda music. It's so obvious. With these guys. They play toghether and you can hear that.No one is left out.Magic and what music is all about.I myself play guitar in a stonerrockband and there is not that much ....what can i say....togetherness (?) ITS THE RHYTHM SECTION THAT DRIVES THIS MARVELOUS BAND . AND ITS THE WASHBOARD / TUBA COMBINATION THAT DRIVES THE RHYTHM SECTION . JUST WONDERFUL .
If I were one of the tourists walking back and forth around this band, I would be instead be the one standing there watching this band in awe.
