    I was there at the Birmingham N.E.C. when this was recorded. Everybody there knew the gig was being recorded and put on an awesome show of their own-lots of singing. The Guy who went with me, who wasn't really familiar with Rush that much, was blown away. My Dad bought the ticket for my Birthday, but sadly, was dead before the night of the Gig came around. 'Prime Mover' was a song that provided some sort of solace for me at that time and the song 'Afterimage', as well. Thanks Dad and thanks to Geddy, Alex and Neil.

    Poppy, positive, uplifting, cheesy....all of those things. I like this song. It makes me smile.

    Playing to programmed synths is harder than it looks, especially for the drummer. They never used click tracks, all the sounds are being triggered through foot pedals, so Neil really had to be locked in to the right groove, otherwise it's just going to be a mess. From a performance perspective, I think that's the thing that makes this most impressive.

    Some of Alex‘s best vocals😂😂

    They didn't just pick Prime Mover as a single over Turn the Page, but named A Show of Hands after that lyric in the song.

    This song actually grew on me. One of the few songs I like from this album.

    I love the interaction between the bass, drums, and guitar. Lots of hidden gems on Hold Your Fire buried under all the synths.

    I can definitely see why it was chosen for a single, however...it's got a definite pop element to it and Geddy's vocals seem to be more palatable to the general public here. Also, I think it (and several other Rush songs of this era) is quite comparable to what Yes was doing on 90125 and Big Generator during the 80s and those records had several hit songs. Genesis was also going pop-prog during this time as well

    I saw this tour and seemed like they were playing mostly songs from this album but then they eventually started playing the older stuff from like 10 years earlier and the crowd really lit up

    I discovered Rush about 10 years old around the time Permanent Waves was released and couldn't get enough of all those albums back then, then those three mid-80s albums came out and just didn't grab me very much but a few songs here and there. When you're in the middle of all that you're thinking that's how the band is going to stay permanently but thank goodness for me on their next studio album Presto they started playing much more of what I like

    It was a fair reaction. I myself didn't listen to some songs in the album when they released it because they changed their music style, but later on they recreated and developed their magic style.

    I’ve always liked this song, I think its the bass line and the “anything can happen’ gets stuck in my head. I don’t know. I’m more of a 70’s era Rush guy but I like for specific reason HYF songs. Maybe because 80’s synth music is a guilty pleasure even though I’m a prog rock guy.

  • @anicefan
    @anicefan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It didn’t really matter what songs they released as singles, they weren’t going to get played on the radio anyway. HYF is the album I wish they hadn’t made.

    I love this song and usually rush are better live but in this case the live version could have been done better.

  • @michaelbriefs9764
    @michaelbriefs9764 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a fun one. It's Rush-Pop and, therefore, it's better and more musical (especially for 3 guys) than most of the "Pop" stuff of the time. I like the changes and dynamics of the song. It's a "happy" Rush song and makes sense in the time that it was written. I grew up in the 80's so I get it.

  • @allanperry6507
    @allanperry6507 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey it might not be their best period of making music but they survived the strangeness of the times. Hey a band that stayed together as long as they did gets props in my book. I grew up in these times and RUSH was still one of the better groups to listen to . Guess you have to be around during this period to appreciate it .🤘RUSH🤘🇨🇦

    I can see why this is not normally included in...anything. You can hear them struggling with timing.
    THAT BEING SAID....they are a million times better than I could ever be on my best day!!!!
    I wonder if this is why they never played Available Light live?

  • @mightyV444
    @mightyV444 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had loooved 'Prime Mover' at that time! Especially the bass lines, which I learnt to play by ear - Sadly, this song hasn't aged all too well. I do still kinda like it, though. Mostly for the lyrics. And I've always preferred this version over the studio one 🙂

  • @chrisw2546
    @chrisw2546 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Surprisingly, one of the few songs I prefer studio over live. Usually when they perform live with older songs there's more 'punch' to the music. That didn't happen here. Even Turn The Page was better live on ASOH. One Little Victory from Vapor Trails and Headlong Flight from Clockwork Angels are two others that I expected to kill live and really didn't get that.

    At least Geddy wasn't buried behind the keyboards on this one. But yeah, it's merely "OK" IMO. I just feel like from a writing standpoint it's a bit thin on the bones.

    This tune was my queue for a beer run or washroom break, in order to avoid long lineups at intermission, these were useful during the shows in the 1980s!!

      @@ianhewitson2738 Agreed. Seen them 42 times but songs like Big Money and Force 10 never sounded right live. Yet Marathon and Mission were mind blowing. Pleasure.

    When they get to the part where only Neil is playing along with the triggers for the keyboards, I’m surprised they didn’t drop a disco ball over Alex to dance to. Definitely surprised this was a single. The only good thing is it had the title of the live album in the lyrics. So moving on.

  • @biggie25x
    @biggie25x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not my favorite either and that’s okay. You don’t have to like all of it to appreciate them. It’s part of the beauty of the band in that they took risks and tried different sounds. Like their last 5-6 albums though. Clockwork Angels is up there with my favorite albums.

  • @shabadoo25
    @shabadoo25 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe singles are picked by record labels and not the band? Last ditch effort to mainstream them? I don't know. This is just another song on an album never to be heard from again after the HYF tour.

  • @toddc28

    Rush played 6 of the 10 tracks from Hold Your Fire on this tour. I understand they wanted to promote the album but they could have left out Prime Mover and played something else from Signals or Grace Under Pressure instead. Or even Freewill, Red Barchetta or Vital Signs which they hadn’t played in a couple tours. Prime Mover is just an ok song. And the live version doesn’t do much for me.

  • @juliebrockett3471

    You literally just shi# yourself, go clean up,and come back when you grow up! First of all listen to the studio album first. Secondly, this was another transitional album similar to Moving Pictures. Now go back to bed and come back when you get it….

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. You're not new here unless I'm missing something... So you probably know I listened to the studio version first.... and didn't like it. You love late 80s Rush huh? It's cool... Grace Under Pressure is a great album and Power Windows doesn't have a bad song on it really. HYF is nearly as bad as their first album though... a few good ones but mostly a hard pass. Can't be great all the time I guess. Also no I don't know the lyrics to this song, the music makes me not want to learn them lol.
