- The Wicked 200km - ridewithgps.co...
Starting from Alfreton (you can ignore the commute to the start) this ride takes to East into the cold Spring tundra of Lincolnshire to Wickenby Airfield where you'll stop for afternoon lunch - oh and it's also the turnaround point.
After leaving Wickenby it's time to head back West and it doesn't matter what the weather gods are up to - travelling this way will always be harder then the outbound journey. Especially the last 30-35km or so as things gradually go upwards, in fact too gradual for my liking.
Do make sure you fuel properly for the final stretch (I didn't) as it's very slow and constantly uphill once you reach Southwell. Talking of Southwell you'll take a closed road section into the town centre, another one to add to your list of 'places to ride where cannot go'.
All in all the Wicked was more than just a lame pun about Wickenby, it really does have a wicked tail at the end so be sure to be ready for it.

Love the Red Mercian best bike on show at the start. Can't beat Steel
There were 2 on the ride....I had the other one! and you are right abut Steel!
It's great to see such diverse bikes when you show up at an audax event.
That’s mine! 😊
Great to see the kinds of bikes people use for this. I intend to join a few this year. Like that classic Mercian with 853 steel and brooks saddle.
Yeah I always love look at the line up =) Makes my silver titanium look boring though!
As far as I know the flashing light ban on audax rides was rejected, I voted the same as yourself for the same reasons
I can understand the nuisance in the middle of nowhere on back lanes; in that instance riders should just talk to one another. I know i have "please can you the brightness down" is all that is required. But essentially we use the flashing light for the attention of motorists.

Unless im riding on my own,
I use the day flash in the day and turn it down when it's dark.
All the best on the Canary Islands ride 🤞👍
@@Bijou-Bob thank you!
Was great to catch up with you at the start Richard. Like you I found it a little challenging given the weather…but a well organised Audax all the same. Take care and hoe to see you soon.👍
Just struggling in the wind really, and the climb back was on and on and on. =) Yeah to see you as well.
Well done Richard.😢
That's near me live at snarford if it's Wickenby
It was such a great find =) All that in one pokey church in the middle of nowhere, I mean, not a town or major city just a small, very small village hiding away in the Lincolnshire countryside.
Well done Richard. I'd love to see your prep and packing for your cycling abroad. Are you taking your own bike?
Yes! I will be doing a video in the last week before the event showing the final set up. I will probably do a training load ride before then as well. Its important to test setup before you ride!
@@BikepackingAdventures Great! I look forward to that. I'm trying to become more efficient in longer distances. I seem to carry a lot of stuff. I'm glad I did so recently though as I came off my bike. The heaps of clothes and gear helped protect me and my bike! Well done on the training and the videos and thanks for sharing with us.
nice - not the best weather - take care 😄
But not the worst either =)
what's the rear mudguard
Its the Win Wing from Ass Saver.
What do think lovely church at snarrrford
What waterproof jacket are you using, the green one?
Hi, its the Rab Downpour 2.0. It's probably one size too large for me, a bit baggy, but it doesn't mean I can wear it over the helmet which I find hugely beneficial.
@@BikepackingAdventures Thanks. Baggy definitely has its advantages. I'll look into it. I'm currently using a Fjallraven Specialized Riders Wind Jacket, which I waxed. Brilliant for those day-long Winter downpours, but getting a bit toasty now! Best wishes.
Yes I think this was voted on but I don't know the result. If anyone has got a link to the result . . . . ?
The News section of the audax website so says results of the vote coming soon.
