  • Ray Nitschke speaks to our 1990 Illinois football team prior to Purdue game that year. We finished the season tied for first place in the Big Ten with Iowa (the eventual Rose Bowl representative), Michigan, and Michigan State. We all finished 6-2 in conference. This still stands as the greatest motivational speech I ever heard. And you know, there were 14 future NFL stars in that crowd of players that Friday afternoon, but there still was only one NFL Hall of Famer there that day............and that's the man speaking.

I don't think the players realize just how great a football player Ray was and what he accomplished. Bukus' hero is Ray,love it.

It's no coincidence that after that speech, Illinois played their best game of the season that week beating Purdue 34-0.

If that speech doesn't make you feel like you can run through a brick wall, I don't know what will. God bless RAY NITSCHKE!!!

The amount of intensity this man conjured up, was like an old seasoned warrior lion who still had the roar and heart inside of him. This is the type of man you would want to follow into battle.

"Are you gonna' beat Purdue, are you gonna' go to the Rose Bowl, are you gonna' win the Rose Bowl, you're my guys remember that!!!!!" Now I'm sure a lot of these young kids see an older man giving them a pep talk, but just picture him in full Packers gear, w/eye black, teeth out, sporting #66 yelling this, oh fuck yea, what a motivating talk!! Requiescat in Pace Ray Nitschke, the best Middle Linebacker in Pro Football.

"I paid the price to be a Champion..." What price was that? Traumatic Brain Injury? CTE (in 1990?). Skipping classes to get the "Petroleum Engineering" degree? This should be an exhibit in the CTE library - "I can still play!"
