Back when Nier first released in 2010 the reason I started playing it is because I was on a certain imageboard and the music of the game was a hot discussion at the time, listened to the whole thing casually then went out and bought the game. Absolutely worth it and the experience will stay with me forever.
This and Song of the Ancients are easily the most iconic Nier songs. I love how tragic this sounds and how it’s so different from what you’d expect a final boss theme to sound like. Also it’s a shame this upload seems to be a shortened down version of Ver 1.22’s Shadowlord.
Yeah, the original shadowlord is one of my favourite pieces of music ever, there's just so much emotion attached to the scene it plays in. It's a shame that apparently as part of the replicant release, Sqenix copyrighted pretty much all vids containing that piece of music, so I can't even honestly recommend it to jesse.

You heard only the first part of that song. There's a second, more intense version that occurs. Also, that was the Replicant v1.22 rendition. The 2010 is my personal favorite, but v1.22's stands solid in it's own right.
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure this one is the original! The v1.22 version has a bell sound right when the organ enters in the intro, for example, and this version here didn't have it
@@Naerlyn the intro to Gestalt's version has multiple female singers right from the beginning, while this has a single, more pronounced singer while others can be heard in the background, and come forward as the song progresses.

I think I now know why I prefer the original OST over the remade one. For some reason, despite it's more orchestral setting, it's lacking a kind of "oomph!" that the original had in my opinion. Still, Shadowlord is such a classic and a good track nonetheless! :D I really hope at some point you can listen to the OST by yourself comparing the original and the remade one for you to form an own opinion on it and maybe explain in better terms than me how they differ!

The original is better, which is the case for most of the franchise's OST. Glad you finally got around to it, regardless. Speaking of "Lord" God Eater's Merciless Lord track is also worth a listen.
I'll preempt this with what I was initially going to end this comment with, but I decided against it: Nier Replicant 1.22 did not need a brand new soundtrack. It at most could have used a digital remaster to improve the sound quality. As others have said as well, this track has a part 2, which the original track simply transitioned into naturally. This one follows suit with pacing itself in the gameplay so it's effectively sorted into phase 1 and phase 2 tracks now. So one issue I take pretty seriously with this song and another track in the Sand Temple... They effectively had a different choir cover these tracks that Emi Evans did primarily in the original tracks with a great deal of post production to emulate a choir. The biggest problem I have is the tone of the cover is much more bombastic than it is haunting like in Emi's lyrics. The remake vocalist is almost like an experienced opera singer, who seemed to have little interest in emulating the original. There's not necessarily anything wrong with that, but Emi Evans has such a distinct vocal range that replacing her with someone with a totally different range did not work for me. I actually was so upset hearing the sand temple theme(plus the boss theme) before the remake released that I altogether refused to pay for the game again at full price. I'm not as frustrated by it now, but this rendition of Shadowlord has the exact same issue in the lyrics, and the exact same issue in the percussion as with many of the iconic Nier tracks from 2010.
Man, the last two Nier songs at least have been a much more “tame” version than they could be. A shame, but you’ll have the opportunity to hear them in game- which is exciting.
To everyone ranting about how he doesn’t watch the right version, here’s your friendly reminder most Nier tracks have like 24 versions, and then those versions get mixed together too. Saying “the old version” or “the other version” doesn’t help at all.
if you want a good sampling of the music in mid battle, (Purely Gameplay Advice, No Story Spoilers) you may want to give bosses some room to breathe. the fights arent at all tailored for you to hear the whole song through one whole time before the boss is dead. theres one boss that i kill before the beat drops every time and its a bit of a downer. you get insanely powerful over the course of the game if youre actively looking to upgrade your character.
the original shadowlord from nier gestalt is one of my favourite songs in a videogame, this is the remastered one which is not as good imo. Also i think this was only the first part of the song.
One of my favorite songs from the series, I'm just sad someone put up an unofficial arrangement to react to instead of the actual version of it, the thumbnail is the same so it probably tricked whoever suggested the song.
@@QuercusPrime Was this the 1.22 version? I saw people in the live chat saying it was different than the 1.22 version as well but it's my bad if it's just the official remix. Still prefer the original personally but yeah.
@@taltos2467 Perhaps the issue is that there are three versions of Shadowlord in 1.22. There's phase 1 (which is what was played here), phase 2 (that is a 1 to 1 of Gestalt in terms of song structure), and a music box version that plays at the very end. They are all Shadowlord, but Phase 2 is probably what people are remembering. I had assumed I simply had not found these other parts of the original yet rather than them not existing.
Probably controversial: I think Shadowlord is massively overhyped. It feels like such a conventional and obvious piece of dramatic music, pretty underwhelming in comparison to a lot of the soundtrack. It works well how it's used in the game, but is feels like a cheap and easy way to gain the desired effect. I certainly wouldn't call it bad or anything, just that I feel like it doesn't deserve the pedestal it's put on.
I must say this is a disappointment. Saw the title and expected the original version which plays out in full. Yet what we got is the 1.22 version and first half only... Jesse, at least mark you are doing only one half of the 1.22 version so we don't have false hope. This is as bad as the Darkness of Unknown reaction where I walk in to only find out you did the last phase only...

I'm not as frustrated by it now, but this rendition of Shadowlord has the exact same issue in the lyrics, and the exact same issue in the percussion as with many of the iconic Nier tracks from 2010.
New FFXIV patch just dropped, It is filled with bangers, expect a lot of requests soon.
I'm sorry Shadowlord...
This sounded kinda off to me. I didn't play the remake. Seems like it changed some tracks and not for the better.
they changed every song in the remaster and its quite an achievment to butcher all of them
What about Deadbolt OST?
Man, the last two Nier songs at least have been a much more “tame” version than they could be. A shame, but you’ll have the opportunity to hear them in game- which is exciting.
To everyone ranting about how he doesn’t watch the right version, here’s your friendly reminder most Nier tracks have like 24 versions, and then those versions get mixed together too.
Saying “the old version” or “the other version” doesn’t help at all.
if you want a good sampling of the music in mid battle, (Purely Gameplay Advice, No Story Spoilers)
you may want to give bosses some room to breathe. the fights arent at all tailored for you to hear the whole song through one whole time before the boss is dead. theres one boss that i kill before the beat drops every time and its a bit of a downer. you get insanely powerful over the course of the game if youre actively looking to upgrade your character.
Team Shadowlord :(
Ok guys, i think now it's time to make him react to Kingdom Hearts songs
the original shadowlord from nier gestalt is one of my favourite songs in a videogame, this is the remastered one which is not as good imo. Also i think this was only the first part of the song.
Phase two pls
One of my favorite songs from the series, I'm just sad someone put up an unofficial arrangement to react to instead of the actual version of it, the thumbnail is the same so it probably tricked whoever suggested the song.
Replicant 1.22 is just as official as Gestalt was. Both soundtracks are good.
Hy jessie,i want to invite you to coke studio Pakistan music (specially season14),please cheak couple of songs you will love it,season14
Yeah because its not the "original" Shadowlord track, this was one of the many bad remixes.
Nier Music?
Don't think
Just listen
You really have to react the full version of shadowlord ver 1.22, it very masterpiece!😄
God, this really lacks the impact of the original version. It's still great, but I don't think I'm a huge fan of some of the remade tracks.
Agreed.
If you want Jesse to react to the songs and versions you prefer, you could make a Patreon request.
Gestalt is better, Monaca with Keiichi Okabe are the real geniuses and original composers, this version 1.22...it's very poor...all the sountrack; this theme, the original it's longer and so much better.
you should listen to all the proper and good versions of these songs which are the originals from Nier Gestalt. They butchered it soo much
