Yay my request!!! (Kaki here though I prefere kkcat)I requested this because Nobuo composed when he was into Japanese Folk music and it's really a song with a flavor I never heard before 😊. I'm so glad you enjoy it. This song recieved mixed reactions as it's so "different" with a folk singer from Okinawa. But pretty much everyone agrees it's iconic ❤️. You as usual are dead on with some of your analysis but I won't spoil what :))).

oh wow, I didn't realize they actually got an Okinawan person for it. That's really cool. It also isn't just Japanese folk, since Okinawa/ryukyu is culturally its own thing.

FFX was one of the few games I will call a narrative masterpiece, but it deserves it. One of the best games I've ever played and this track hits hard in the game. If you do experience it, I hope you'll love it!

A narrative masterpiece, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks it was the best gameplay in the whole series too.

    • @osterbuuny3083
      @osterbuuny3083 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think, looking at it from a more distanced perspective, the quality of the narrative is quite subjective. It focuses a lot on the relationship between Yuna and Tidus and if you don't like them, I'd imagine you would not really care about a major part of the story. I do, though, so I'm just speculating here.

FFX was the first game where Uematsu was not the sole composer, sharing that duty with Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano. However, he still did over half of the OST and this theme is also composed by him. Some FF games have both Japanese and English vocal themes depending which version you play, some stick with either English or Japanese worldwide. This is one of those cases where the song is Japanese in every version. The setting of FFX is very much inspired by southeast Asia so I assume they thought keeping the song in Japanese fits the overall vibe.
Fun fact: There is an English version that was arranged for the Distant Worlds concerts, performed by Susan Calloway.

    • @pallao3500

Suteki da ne means “Lovely isn’t it” most of the lyrics mention being close to each other holding hands and just pretty much a very beautiful love song from the Japanese I know at least. Lots of dream dialogue and illusions. Haven’t played 10 yet but I plan on it.

    YOU'RE NOT GONNA CRY
YOU LITERALLY CRIED OVER THIS GAME YESTERDAY
Me not even five seconds into the song: *tearing up and trying not to remember the last lines of the game* goddammit
In all seriousness, I do love FFX. I know I said it on Otherworld, but I play through this game on nearly an annual basis. I own it on nearly every console its been released for.
My sister got me the Switch release for my birthday and my mom went "don't you own three copies of that game already??"
Had to correct her and tell her it was four before the Switch version.
FFX is also the Final Fantasy I recommend when people don't know which one to start with. It's a good balance of more classic JRPG elements and more modern mechanics. And while some of the voice acting has mid/late 90s anime dub performance, the story and its themes really stand the test of time (though I will admit that is fully my opinion).
But if you ever do decide to dip your toes in FFX's waters, I think you'll enjoy it!

There is an English version of the song that debuted at one of the live concerts, but it's not in game. Nobuo in the older games tended to reach for Latin for songs with lyrics, I think this was the only one that went (exclusively) with Japanese lyrics. They've leaned more into English lyrics lately, but still have Latin and Japanese depending on the game/composer.

One Winged Angel was the first song in Final Fantasy history to have vocals. Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII(not sure if you've heard that one, but highly recommend) Was the first fully orchestrated song in the franchises history, though both VIII and IX had at least one song that had actual singing and orchestration. FFX was the first one to have a fully orchestrated soundtrack completely, as well as voice acting, as you mentioned. The trend and quality have only continued to increase since then.

Nobuo Uematsu was solo composer on the main series up to IX, lead composer with assistance on X and XI, and solo composer on XIV 1.0 at launch. Songs added in XIV's 1.x patches were composed by Soken and a couple others, then Soken solo composed I think up until Shadowbringers when he started delegating a little more. The only songs not in that launch soundtrack for XIV composed by Uematsu were Dragonsong for Heavensward and Revolutions for Stormblood, the only songs other than Answers to have Susan Calloway on vocals (apart from some arrangements of Answers that use samples of her singing).
Oh, and Uematsu composed a new theme for FFVII Remake, Hollow. I think that's a pretty comprehensive list of everything he's done on Final Fantasy.

    About FF songs localization:
7 choirs were in latin for every region.
8 theme song were in English for every region. Also have some memorable choirs in latin.
9 have the main theme song in both Japanese and English sung by the same artist.
10 main theme songs are only in Japanese for every region. Have an iconic lyrical choir or chanting that has no meaning in any language for every region too. Suggest that it's invented language by the game's lore. But actually Japanese words in abnormal order.
10-2 main theme songs have 2 version of the same song sung by different artist in English and Japanese.
12 main theme songs have Japanese and English versions sung by the same artist again. Like 9.
14 has a huge amount and variation of themes throughout these years. Only one version for all of region. Mostly in English. There are some Japanese too especially in Stromblood expansion that exploring far east culture. Also some invented language like dragon song.
I forgot about 13 and 15. 13 have a beautiful theme song but it doesn't stick to me. And 15 featuring Skrillex and a beautiful version of Stand By Me. But for me it feels too generic and I didn't listen to them much. So I might miss the details or if there are any other versions. But I think they both have only one version of the song for every region.
Beside the main numeric titles. Crisis Core FF7 have a beautiful emotional Japanese theme song too. And the remaster version would be available this year on almost every platform. recommend to play following the 7 remake. And I have to mention another 7 compilation Dirge of Cerberus also have a theme song sung by a legendary J-Rock artist too. He also join the cast of CC as one of the important character.
Another non numeric FF with theme song is Type-0. Sung by Japanese artist as one version for every region too.
CC, DC and Type-0 are straight up modern J-Rock and J-Pop. Unlike 10 that's district Japanese style.

FFX is the first title in the franchise to hit the PS2, so it's the first DVD; 7-9 required multiple CDs on the PSX. It's beloved by many, because of the generational leap, so many younger gamers consider it their first, & therefore their favorite. It's not particularly in my top 5, but it has redeeming qualities.
As for regarding Suteki da Ne, it is only officially in Japanese, & interestingly enough, it's not the prevailing song throughout the game. The Hymn of the Fayth has more leitmotifs, but we'll save elaboration of that for another time just in case you want organic context later.

Don't know if you've had a chance to play FFX, but if you do, wait until you beat the game to look up the translation of the lyrics (if needed)...there's a reason the song has that somber tone tied into the romantic vibe. It's just...when it finally clicks, it'll hit hard.

    On your chest,
    I leave my body
    And dream
    In the night
The wind has stopped and the words
    Are a gentle illusion
The clouds are breaking and tomorrow
    Is a distant voice
    The moon blurs the mirror
    As my heart flows through
The stars shake, and tears spill,
    Tears I can't hide
    Isn't it wonderful
If we could just take each other's hand and walk?
    I want to go
To your city, your home, in your arms
    I touch
    Your face softly
    And dream of melting
    In the morning
    Isn't it wonderful
if we could just take each other's hand and walk?
    I want to go
to your city, your home, in your arms
    On your chest,
    I leave my body
    And dream
    In the night

FFX is "my" Final Fantasy, and one of my top favorite video games/RPGs. Love the soundtrack, the story, and the characters, and it only gets better as I get older. And yes, this song is kept in Japanese when it plays in the game!

Besides this song being absolutely beautiful (it's one of the most beautiful songs in FF and maybe videogames in general) it's cool to hear that you think about trying out more games, especially Final Fantasy.
To throw my two cents in with that topic: If you want to play a more classic FF I recommend VI or IX. VI started the transition of FF into the more tech-heavy era that mostly stayed until XV (at least in terms of singleplayer mainline FFs) and is regarded as one of the best, if not the best and it's my second favorite singleplayer FF.
FFIX on the other hand was this huge loveletter to the more classic, medieval fantasy FFs (aka FFI-V, maybe VI) and it's my favorite because it has a cool cast of characters, the darkest themes of any mainline FF, a great antagonist, (a great mod for PC called "Moguri" that replaces all of the pre-rendered backgrounds with AI-upscaled high quality ones and has a bunch of other graphical fixes and improvements) the most unique artstyle of any mainline FF (which some hate and some love) and the single most beautiful ending cutscene/cinematic not only in the franchise, but all of gaming imo. I cry everytime I see it and I'm not joking. (FFX's ending cutscene is also extremely good, easily top 5, maybe even second place)

So back in the day when they announced the name of the song before the game's release there was another song of the same name with a similar melancholy style (though it sounded pretty different) and there was mass confusion for about a month.

FFX's soundtrack is very high up there for me personally. Certainly one of the best parts of an already great game overall.
When I played FFX for the first time, I was actually a big hater, simply because it's story is rather simple and not as convoluted and multi-layered as I was used to from other JRPGs. However now I'm thinking differently. While I still think that the plot is relatively minimalistic (at least for the genre), the whole narrative benefits from it. On top of that the world and characters are just wonderful, the gameplay is flawless, it's technically extremely well-rounded and the music is beautiful. It's the perfect entry for someone who never played a Final Fantasy before. (although you might get the impression, like me, that Final Fantasy is generally a bit flat when it comes to story, which is not true)
It's hard to make a top 3 of Final Fantasy soundtracks. Because they are all great. Even if the game is bad (looking at FF13 and FF15), you can always bed that the soundtrack is awesome. (which they are) But if I really had to make a top three, I'd pick:
FFXIV (this is a cheat with so many hundreds of tracks including some of the best of FF1-6 as well as FF12 on top of its own great original music)
FFVII (Best character themes I've ever heard in my life)
FFX (Radiates an atmosphere which always makes me cry)

It was actually the sequel to FFX (FFX-2) that got me into FF. I saw a poster with the the 3 main characters (Yuna, Rikku, and Paine) at a game store and as a young boy with raging hormones, that was all it took for me to be interested. My interests in FF games have changed since that point of course (although I have had a crush on Yuna since).
Also If you liked this one, hopefully Eyes on Me from FFVIII and 1000 Words from FFX-2 (the english version since it has the duet) are on the list for future reactions.

Interesting fact is that the director/producer(s) for the Final Fantasy franchise changed dramatically after FFX; the original creator of the series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, left Square Enix and went to Mistwalker(might know them for Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey). This is why there is quite a noticeable shift in style and techniques employed since then. Bonus fact: Sakaguchi is responsible for the story of the much beloved FFVI and VII.

FFX isn't one of my favourites, but I think you would enjoy it, and it would definitely be fun to watch a playthrough. This song gets me every time. A lot of the soundtrack has such a melancholy, sad-but-beautiful vibe to it, which perfectly matches the story. You were spot-on with your thoughts; death and ritual are big themes in this one. It's a tear-jerker, for sure!

i think the English translation seen in the mini vid is from the English vocal arrangement used in the US distant worlds concerts. it's sort of somber as it's a love song tied to the two being kept apart by their circumstances, it means different things for a lot of people as it's one of the big leitmotifs throughout the game. You hear it bright and happy very near the start as a town theme, then here, and a few other places too.

The song actually plays kind of in the middle of the game, from what I remember. FFX is definitely my favorite. The all the cast and music is great, I love the battle system, and it does that thing where you really notice certain things on a second viewing. The world of that game is pretty detailed and thought out. If you don't end up playing it for whatever reason, I would recommend Dansg08's 100% playthrough. He avoids talking about things early about stuff early, so you shouldn't get moments ruined that way. It was cool seeing such a fan of the game talk about different things I never would have noticed and some background things.

FFX is the first FF game where Uematsu was a co-composer. He was one of three composers who worked on the game. The track in question, Suteki Da Ne, was actually composed by Uematsu though.
Also, definitely play FFX if you get the chance. It's excellent. My personal favorite FF.

Whether FFXII's Dalmasca Estersand or Vagrant Story's Great Cathedral, Hitoshi Sakimoto's Epic orchestral sound will be the only thing you'll hear in a long while that could give you the same level of awe One Winged Angel gave you.

Hi. :) I came across your channel because of reaction to this song, I just love this one, one of the most beautiful songs from video games I've ever heard, I mean such songs with vocals. First such song was in Final Fantasy VIII, song "Eyes On Me" where as vocal was chinese female singer Faye Wong. And I think in Final Fantasy X Nobuo Uematsu wanted to have someone to help. I don't know how is in remaster version with "Suteki da ne" song, but in old version is in japanese also in versions of game outside of Japan.
You reacted only to music from video games?

FFX would probably be my third favorite OST in the series, after FFVIII at the top (easily tbh, that soundtrack is just insane) and then FFVII. It has easily my favorite story and characters in the whole series though.

FFVIII and FFIX had no voices (just maybe some choir here and there), but since FFVIII each title has its own sung theme. "Eyes on me" for FFVIII, "Melodies of Life" for FFIX, the one you jusy reacted, "Kiss me Goodbye" for FFXII. Quite pop songs.

FFX-Besaid Island is a song that was far ahead of its time. Someone correct me if I’m wrong right, but weren’t there two main composers for FFX? That’s why the soundtrack has a huge mix of variety? Besaid Island is one of those fun sounding “weird” songs. A best comparison would be Minecraft music honestly. Lol
