Thank you fellow-driver! I am a newbie & that was very helpful! Now if we could get this video on facebook for drivers, especially young drivers ( age 25-35) to see, that would be great! Maybe it should be taught at the DMV! I'm serious though, young parents and even college or working people ARE RUSHING IN THE MORNINGS! or 2nd shift jobs! So, those are scary hours to me...and I just got started and i can already see it...my first route starts tommorrow and i am Praying for all routes, everywhere! God Bless!
Thanks for posting this. Earlier today I had a bus with their hazards flashing while parked at the side of the road and I wasn't sure if I could pass them.
Well, now you know blueumbreon44. I always enjoy teaching. I don't get to do that as much as I would like to. Your comment touched my heart. Thanks for watching!
Yep, happens to me all the time, Here in Ontario we have an all-red 8-way system, people won't stop for that, but they will when I have even one indicator on. Shoot, people stop when I don't have any lights on at all!
To Mrs Hood …What if a bus in front of you has a stop . Do you put your amber lights on ? Do you open your door with the red lights on . I know that Long Island when they have a bus in front that has a stop every single bus behind and if there’s a bus across on the other side of the road should put there ambers on sometimes every there red lights and stop signs .
Thank you for sharing this informative video. By the way Ma'am, I'd like to ask which of those lights turn on when it goes left and right? I'm hoping that you could help me too in determining those lights that a San Francisco MUNI Bus has. Like which turns on when it's on reverse, left and right cut in, left and right turn, hazard and brake. 😅
I think people know red lights mean stop, but they just don't want to stop. I've had friends question what the strobe light is for, and the other lights on top of the bus. It gets tiring explaining it.
I'm not supposed to honk my horn but sometimes it gets the students attention not to cross the road. They usually wait for my "go ahead" signal but sometimes I have crazy drivers coming out of "nowhere" and traveling much too fast. Thanks for watching.
Here is a little trivia for you, my dad started working for Thomas Built buses back I think in 1968. He worked delivering the buses all over N America for years and us boys worked doing it as well. My dad drove school bus delivering kids as well for a number of years before he worked for Thomas Bus. He did not like how people had a hard time seeing the not so bright flashing lights and made a suggestion to Thomas Bus that they needed to start using sealed beams instead of the typical tail light bulb in the big flashers. They took his advice and redesigned the lights and started using sealed beams. Next thing you knew everyone was using them. I have not looked at a bus light up close now for many years. I wonder if they use LED's now?
Might be dumb question but I have been worried about this: if a school bus is pulled over, no red lights flashing (there are lights on), no stop sign, and no kids getting out, can cars pass by? Thanks for the video!
I DID FORGET THE STROBE LIGHT! Oh dear. Thanks for reminding me. I should have double-checked my light panel. I guess I must forgive myself on that one. Thanks for watching.
Yes, Armando. You are correct. When the bus is backing up hazard lights should be on. In my state they prefer we use our turn signal when doing a 2 point turnaround. (I forgot to say that also.) Thanks for catching it, for commenting and for watching!
LOL people stop all the time when I pull over after my last drop off and check the bus I even had a police officer stop and check on me I was laughing like an idiot and told him I was checking to make sure I was empty no kids left behind and told him I have people run my big reds and yellows but stop when I’m pulled over with hazards on checking my bus the police officer realized at that point why I was so amused and went about his day
That's a very good point, Ranger. Unfortunately in my state using Big Yellows for anything other than student pickup/drop off is like stepping on the holy grail. Thanks for watching. Great comment!
More buses should have air horns that for cars who want to pass you know those really loud horns that trains use and some big trucks. I know this is kind of mean but there would be drivers who would make sure the kids don’t wait in the road.
You are funny. It's amazing how many people that are completely ignorant to a school bus and it's lights. I was behind a car today which was behind a bus. The bus was dropping kids off and the car in front of me would stop directly behind the bus with no room in case the bus driver needed to use the emergency exit.
@@misshoodsschoolbuslife1871 In Wisconsin it is a state law that we need to use four ways when we back up. I'm surprised it's not a nationwide thing! Do you have the law where when there are curbs and sidewalks on both sides of the street, you use four way flashers?
What is your rule about hazard lights at railroad tracks? All buses stop at railroad tracks and they use your hazard lights. The general rule is but the people behind must stop and the people approaching the bus must slow down and use caution when crossing the other side of the tracks. Is that about the same where you're at thanks after moving from New York I had to move to a small community and they have a point A to B program if they want to go from point A to point A to point B they just point and go
Im allowed to stop when the kids are being bad i put on the hazards and the cars seat behind me and i cant get out and tell them to go i can go to the back and open the door and tell them to go around but they never listen which is ok..because there stopping for me with HAZARDS on but they cant stop for reds i have to lay on my horn at least 10 times a day to tell them to stop.
I think it distinguishes us from other large vehicles in the dark. We only have it on when we need to turn our headlights on. Also, we can be located from above very quickly.
@@misshoodsschoolbuslife1871 Thank you! most of the school busses my area have phased out the flashing white strobes, mainly because the towns have either switched companies or have started their own transportation departments.
The state of Illinois requires them on top of school buses. They are to be activated on foggy cloudy and low visibility days such as blowing snow. And believe me when you're driving in bad weather you can recognize School Bus for miles
The yellow lights have NEVER meant you need to stop. Solid yellow means prepare to stop on stop lights and flashing means slow and precede with caution. On a bus, it means slow and proceed with caution while observing the bus to see if it stops. IT NEVER MEANS THE BUS HAS TO MAKE OTHER VEHICLES STOP!!!!!! Now, when the bus stops, even before the big reds come on and the STOP arm extends, vehicles should have stopped. It is permitted to pass in front of the bus as long as it is never on the sides of the bus while observing children rushing in during loading. Unloading and not crossing the bus zone is permitted. This has been the case for me in Indiana, Florida, Oklahoma, Utah, California and Colorado.
When loading, first close the door. Then monitor the children to sit BEFORE TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS and preceding on your trip. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN STAND UP WHILE THE BUS IS STATIONARY AND VEHICLES ARE PASSING. That's insane. Should a vehicle hit a stationary bus, the children can be thrown. ... And add Okinawa, Japan to that. What is your signal to indicate you are doing a two-point turn around? A turn signal? I like you so not giving a thumbs down. But try to redo the video.
Sorry Spankers Gaming. Whenever I'm driving my car and I see a school bus with yellow lights flashing, there's NO WAY I'm passing that bus. Those lights are flashing for a reason and you NEVER KNOW what children are going to do. The message being sent by those yellow lights are for the protection of the students. So slow that car down and DON'T YOU DARE PASS THAT BUS unless the driver signals you to do so. It's not about RULES. It's about the safety of the children. I AM NOT "remaking" the video. You want a different message out there? Then get your own TH-cam channel. The children are always MORE IMPORTANT than civilian drivers. I don't care WHERE you come from.
It's pretty bad when you gotta explain to idiots what different lights mean I mean com on seriously that's like cops having to teach people how to use turn signals duh your suppose to know that when you take your driver's test it's not that people don't know it's just they don't care there hurry is more important seems like anymore all idiots know is where that gas pedal is cause they sure all hell don't wanna hit the brake pedal or use turn signals

I which they had this when people take their drivers test. I have go on TH-cam to learn this.
do you have to stop if u r on the left lane (not the oncoming direction, but same direction). Or what if you are on the far left lane, like 3rd one..
The wheels on thebus go round and round all through the town
People do that for meaness don't they supposed to stop when the red lights flashing
Seems to be KY Spec and a 2009
Don't people assume hazards mean go around?
Red and white leds work well on the bottom of the front and back of buses our district has them
It’s true about the flashers 😂

Yep. I forgot the strobe light. Thanks for reminding me.
If you are stopped on a roadway, the RED’s need stay activated while you are waiting for children to sit down. You can’t just sit stopped on the road
What’s the purpose of the yellow bar that sticks out when you put on the reds?
Kyle Fiebig so the driver can see the kids when they cross
Do you blow the horn with people run the reds? I can tell you my driver does. There is over 100 cars per year that run the stop arms.

I have a suggestion for reversing:
Yellow flashers on top, hazzards, and then do the procedure
But dont use the reds, only cautions

This arm protects the students as they board the bus. from any traffic at the stop.

Did everything right mrs. Hurt Gilmore Anderson
What is that thing in front of the school bus that swings out
It's called a crossing gate. It's supposed to keep vehicles from moving while children are boarding the bus. Good question and thanks for watching!

Oh Lord No! They would have a FIT if we used those four ways for anything that did not pertain to child pickup or drop off.
